    We write this essay for both lay readers and scientists, though mainstream economists are welcome to enjoy it too. Our subject is the basic toolbox of mainstream economics. The most important tools in this box are demand, supply and equilibrium. All mainstream economists – as well as many heterodox ones – use these tools, pretty much all the time. They are essential. Without them, the entire discipline collapses. But in our view, these are not scientific tools. Economists manipulate them on paper with impeccable success (at least in their own opinion). But the manipulations are entirely imaginary. Contrary to what economists tell us, demand, supply and equilibrium do not carry over to the actual world: they cannot be empirically identified; they cannot be observed, directly or indirectly; and they certainly cannot be objectively measured. And this is a problem because science without objective empirical tools is hardly science at all.

    In this study we examine how the use of private and public transport has changed since the early 2000s in Brazilian cities. We analyzed data on the changing patterns of consumption of transportation goods and services by Brazilian families over the last 20 years. We also analyzed how urban transportation costs, the demand for public transport, and the country's vehicle fl eet have evolved in that period. All the analyses conducted pointed to a gradual and persistent trend of households moving away from public transportation towards individual modes of transport, mainly among the middle and lower classes in medium and small cities. These changing patterns caused a continuous deterioration of mobility conditions in Brazilian cities, signifi cantly increasing the time people tend to spend in traffi c. Furthermore, we demonstrate how people are unequally affected by poor mobility conditions according to their socioeconomic status, gender, and color. Finally, we show how the economic and public health crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on urban mobility patterns, causing a sharp decline in the numbers of daily public transport passengers across the country. Those fi ndings indicate that the Covid-19 pandemic will likely deepen the vicious cycle of passenger loss and increasing public transport fares, thus accelerating the historical trend of modal shifts from public transportation to individual modes of transport in Brazilian cities. At the end of the study we point to a few urban and transport policies that could help mitigate this trend.

    For football executives, understanding the determinants of spectator no-show behavior better is of utmost importance. Recent research efforts, however, have primarily focused on exploring the potential effects of determinants that the club management can hardly influence (e.g., potential scheduling effects, the visiting team's quality, and the weather). In contrast, our understanding of factors relating to both accommodation (e.g., the ticket price), socio-demographics (e.g., age), and also emerging no-show habits, in predicting no-show behavior is still limited. Here, departing from more traditional survey-approaches, we address this shortcoming by exploring disaggregated behavioral season ticket holder data provided by an established Swiss Super League club. Analyzing a rich data set containing roughly 2.09 million attendance decisions made by ticket holders in Switzerland between 2013 and 2016, we observe that both a season ticket holder's accommodation and his (or her) socio-demographic information can help predict subsequent no-show behavior. In particular, we notice an important role of a season ticket holders' age, his (or her) domicile, and emerging no-show habits, as well as the season ticket price. Although our results suggest that the management of clubs with a strong demand for tickets might be well-advised to begin experimenting with strategies to exploit emerging no-show habits among their season ticket holders, most executives, i.e., those operating at clubs that sell-out their stadium only occasionally, might want to prioritize efforts to increase the inherent ticket value (e.g., by reducing the ticket supply).

    We consider two vertical links between informal- and formal-sector firms and study their implications. In one case, the final products produced by the formal- and informal-sector firms are vertically differentiated in terms of quality, and the size of the informal sector demand is related to the income distribution. Our paper studies the implications of this quality choice for the size of the informal sector. In the other case, the informal-sector firm produces an intermediate good as an input for the formal-sector firm. This has several possible implications for the growth of the informal sector in terms of both output and productivity.

    This paper uses a health labor market lens to examine the impact of COVID-19 on health workers, as well as relevant policy levers. It compiles a collection of literature using a standardized measurement framework to determine the impact of COVID-19 on health workers. It examines the relevant issues under the lens of a health labor market. In particular, the paper interprets this information and knowledge by focusing on the supply, demand, and mismatches in a health labor market. Within this framework, it presents relevant issues on COVID-19 and its impact on health workers, as well as the ensuing policy response. Finally, the chapter presents key lessons learned from COVID-19 to inform future responses related to ensuring a sufficient workforce to tackle them.
