This collection explores strategies of reading space and conflict in Canadian and Québécois literary and cultural performances. How do literary texts and popular cultural performances produce and contest spatial practices? What is the role of the nation, the city, the community, and the individual subject in reproducing space, even during times of global hegemony and neocolonialism? In what ways do marginalized individuals and communities represent, contest, or appropriate spaces through counter-narratives and expressions of culture from below? And how does space itself shape conflict, counter-memory, and culture from below? Focusing on contestation instead of harmony and consensus, Contested Spaces disturbs the idealized space of Canadian multicultural pluralism to carry literary analysis and cultural studies into spaces often undetected and unforeseen; Contested Spaces exposes geographies of exclusion and difference such as flophouses and "slums," shantytowns and urban alleyways, underground spaces and peep shows, inner city urban parks as experienced by minority ethnics, the poor, women, social activists, Indigenous people, and Francophones in Canada. These essays are the product of sustained and high-level collaboration across French and English academic communities in Canada to facilitate theoretical exchange on the topic of space and contestation, to expose geographies of exclusion, and to generate new spaces of hope in the spirit of pioneering work by Henri Lefebvre, Michel Foucault, Michel de Certeau, Doreen Massey, David Harvey, and other more recent theorists of space

University Departments ; sf1 "English at the University of Virginia offers access to a large and varied group of experts engaged in exploring different aspects of literature. Our department has never tried to concentrate on any one area of literature or on a single critical orientation. Rather, we have worked to gather a lively diversity of professors with strengths in every facet of literary endeavor. In addition to those who concentrate their study in historical periods from medieval to modern, the faculty also contains folklore and oral tradition specialists, linguistic specialists, film critics, psychoanalytic critics, feminist critics, rhetoricians, biographers, philosophers of the theory of criticism, African-Americanists, and specialists in the relation of literature to culture. For those majors who wish to develop special skills in writing, our staff includes practicing journalists, fiction writers, and poets, as well as literary scholars and critics." The website of the UVA English Department offers detailed information on the department, its graduate and undergraduate programmes, its staff, courses, research projects, online courses, an electronic toolkit, and events.

If you're interested in film, women's studies, issues of race and difference, Southern literature, contemporary fiction, theatre, linguistics, or creative writing, English is also for you. Members of the Department have recently published on such topics as twentieth-century art and literature, the American West and the frontier, black and white dialects of American English, Gay and Lesbian Studies, and contemporary revisions in the literary canon, as well as in more traditional areas such as Shakespeare, Milton, William Faulkner, and T. S. Eliot. Students studying English continue these interests in graduate school, or they teach, or they enter fields such as publishing; but they also, and quite routinely, enter law school, medical school, business, or other professions." The Department of English at Duke offers programmes at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including American Studies, Critical Theory, Linguistics, Creative Writing, African-American Studies, Medieval Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, and Women and Gender. University Departments ; sf1 "With over 250 undergraduate majors, over 100 graduate students, and over 60 full time faculty members, the English Department is one of the largest on the Manoa campus. These numbers do not however translate into large lectures: only a handful of courses offered by the Department have an enrollment of more than 25 students. The Department offers a 33-credit undergraduate major with possible emphases in American literature, British literature, Hawai`i and Pacific literature, or World literature in English; Composition and Rhetoric; or Creative Writing. The English minor consists of 15 upper-division English credits and allows the student three elective courses in addition to two required courses. In the graduate program, the student may pursue the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with a concentration in Literary Studies in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, or Cultural Studies in Asia/Pacific. The English Department believes that the abilities to write effectively and to read and think critically are the hallmarks of an educated person. In teaching these skills, the Department also attempts to develop the student's aesthetic appreciation and social/historical understanding of literature." The program also promotes global awareness and the appreciation of cultural diversity through numerous opportunities for world and multicultural studies. Our goal is that, through the humanistic study of a variety of literatures, students will obtain a better understanding of themselves, their culture and other cultures with which they must invariably come into contact. A senior requirement ensures that each major will have a final capstone experience through courses designed to integrate earlier training and focus it toward postgraduate needs and opportunities."

University Departments ; sf1 "Through teaching, research, and public service, the English Department will provide a superior education in English studies that will enhance students' analytic, appreciative, and communicative capacities; prepare majors, minors, and graduate students for further study or careers in teaching, business and industry, or public service; contribute to the professional and cultural development of the citizens of South Carolina, the region, the nation, and the world. Established in 1962, the Bachelor of Arts in English is a traditional program, emphasizing a historical approach to the study of Bristish and American literary periods. Because the Department of English faculty consists of teachers and researchers with diverse scholarly interests, the program also provides its students with the opportunity to integrate study of these traditional periods with coursework in other areas of English studies, such as literary criticism and theory, technical communication, rhetoric, creative writing, composition, language and grammar, ethnic literature, women's literature, and film. The program is designed to provide the academic background, research skills, and theoretical and critical methods of literary study necessary for work at the graduate level, to help students acquire an understanding of our literary heritage, and to improve students' writing skills. The Department of English has grown dramatically over the past decade to a current enrollment of over 300 students and a faculty more than 40 tenured or tenure-track professors."
