    It has been observed that “words do not have meanings but rather meanings have words.” But even more, words and phrases, usually thought of as the basic units of meaning, actually should be seen as having only usages within contexts. These contexts themselves are the elements of communication that activate mental and bodily states and processes, and can be properly thought of as the construal of meaning. Sometimes these contexts of usage are shaped by phonological or grammatical patterns (see B. Bergen), sometimes by sociological factors such as reciprocity (see E. Goffman), and of course most commonly by lexical (usually radial) patterns and categories (traditionally presented as “semantic domains”). Cognitive linguists (e.g., Lakoff, Turner) have been hinting at something like this for a long time, but a clear restatement of what constitutes semantics is overdue.

    Both in Judaism and Christianity Jesus was to some extent separated or detached from Judaism. However, as Matthias Henze says, in the last 50 years we have been witness‑ing significant changes in the approach and view of the Jewish world of the Gospels and consequently the New Testament. This positive shift should affect not only our view of the »Jewishness of Jesus« but also of biblical interpretation. Namely, we can expect that Jesus lived, thought, spoke and taught as a Jew and not as a »Christian« in the historical sense of the word. In terms of biblical interpretation, that means that the proper context for interpreting the Bible is the context of the biblical writers. Accordingly, our goal should be studying his‑torical, cultural or literary contexts in order to discover a worldview context of the biblical authors and with these »glasses« approach to reading the Scriptures. Based on this reasoning, in the first part of the paper, we will address certain theological and historical reasons for the exclusion of the Jewishness of Jesus from both Judaism and Christianity. In the second part, we will discuss the importance of the Jewishness of Jesus for understanding the worldview context of the biblical authors. In the last part, as a case study, we will demonstrate through the interpretation of Matthew 16,13‑20 (the issue of »the rock«) and Luke 11,1‑4 (the Lord’s Prayer) through »Jewish eyes« that we can gain a different and even better interpretation of these two texts that better fit the context of the biblical writers.

    The paper seeks to fill the gap in the literature that on the one hand adopts productively a Foucauldian genealogical approach to analyze religious phenomena yet on the other hand offers only minimum details, or no account, of methodological criteria and analytical procedures. Drawing retrospectively on the methodological experiences and insights of the author’s previous genealogical exercises, and the findings of some of the works above, the paper develops a contextual genealogical approach to study the religious in colonial and post-colonial settings with a Christian background. Based on a critical adoption of Nietzschean and Foucauldian tenets and six strategic analytical axes, the approach is presented as an open and flexible context-oriented methodological alternative for the necessarily constant rethinking of the religious in the present.

    Luke 14:26 has commonly been viewed as an example of hyperbole. This article applies modern studies on hyperbole that hold as its principle criteria both a scalar property and an evaluative/expressive function. We apply these criteria, analyzing Luke 14:26 in terms of encoded language, co-text, and context. We argue that hyperbole arises from the choice to use "hate" rather than "love more than" but also that the hyperbolic usage relies on a cause for effect (emotion for emotional response) metonym. In terms of language, we show that "hate" has variant meanings that may be different in their degrees of encoding. In terms of co-text, we argue that Luke’s use of "hate" and Matthew’s use of "love more than" are relevantly chosen; in other words, they are suited to and to be interpreted against their co-texts.

    Hebrew kōl means “every,” “the whole,” “all.” However, a literal translation does not always make sense. I investigated cases where kōl does not express totality in the sense of “one hundred percent.” I present a collection of examples that show that kōl can also be used (1) to express variety, (2) as hyperbole, (3) in a way defined by the context, and (4) for stylistic reasons. I argue that kōl sometimes needs to be translated with expressions such as “all kinds of,” “all other,” “in unity,” or in other context-sensitive ways; where it is perceived as redundant or misleading, it may remain untranslated.

    Mit etwa 3000 Aquarellen und Zeichnungen hinterließ Hermann Hesse neben seinem schriftstellerischen Werk auch ein umfangreiches bildnerisches Œuvre, das hier umfassend analysiert und in einen biographischen, zeitgenössischen und kunsthistorischen Kontext eingeordnet wird. Abseits der bisher primär in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschung erfolgten Betrachtung und Beurteilung des bildkünstlerischen Schaffens als – überwiegend therapeutische – Nebenbeschäftigung eines Schriftstellers werden Entwicklungen und Einflüsse in Hesses bildkünstlerischem Schaffen, Hintergründe und Motivation sowie Wechselwirkungen mit seiner Arbeit als Schriftsteller untersucht. With around 3000 watercolours and drawings, Hermann Hesse did not only leave behind his literary work but also an extensive visual oeuvre, which is comprehensively analysed in this study and put into a biographical, contemporary and art history context. Unlike literary studies’ previous consideration and assessment of visual art as the—predominantly therapeutic—sideline of a writer, this book examines developments and influences in Hesse’s visual oeuvre, its background and motivation as well as its correlations with his work as a writer.

    Unter den Bedingungen einer Diktatur oder eines autoritären Regimes bildet sich ein spezifischer Sprachgebrauch heraus, in dem Machtverhältnisse gestützt, subversiv entlarvt, unterwandert oder offensiv kritisiert werden. Aufschlussreich ist dabei nicht nur, was, wann, wie, von wem, in welchem öffentlichen oder privaten Raum gesagt wird, sondern auch die Art und Weise, wie etwas nicht gesagt und wann, worüber und wie geschwiegen wird.Der vorliegende Band untersucht den spezifischen Sprachgebrauch in und nach der Diktatur bzw. in und nach autoritären Regimen in einer deutsch-arabischen Perspektive und ist das Ergebnis einer dreijährigen interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit deutscher und nord-afrikanischer Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen. Mit den gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen, die viele arabische Länder begonnen und wenige fortgesetzt haben, ist die Thematik hochaktuell.Die sprachphilosophischen, linguistischen, ethnologischen, literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen wenden sich vier thematischen Schwerpunkten zu: Ein erstes Kapitel untersucht Sprache als Instrument der Macht. Ein zweites Kapitel wendet sich dem Gegendiskurs und der Subversion innerhalb der arabisch- und deutschsprachigen Literatur zu. Ein dritter Themenschwerpunkt liegt auf der Aneignung und Enteignung von philosophischen Begriffen im Kontext autoritärer Staaten. Ein vierter und letzter Fokus liegt auf den Wendepunkten, auf Protest und Öffentlichkeit, die sich in Demonstrationssprüchen, Protestliedern in Umbruchzeiten und Literatur ausdrücken.

    This paper, taking into account previous partial studies, formulates the methodology, aspects, and aims of a pioneering study of emotions in all the major literary genres of the Old Testament books. Special attention is given to the literary representation of the emotional state of female characters in Old Testament narratives and poems. In light of previous representations of emotions in the Old Testament, the study proposes an integrated analysis of the selected texts that combines linguistic-literary, historical-anthropological, and ethical-moral aspects. The focus is on the study of emotions in the relationships between male and female persons and between humans and God. The analysis of the selected texts takes into account the broader textual and intertextual relationships in relation to similar texts in the Old Testament. The paper focuses on how partial, often abstractly cognitive and allegorical methods can be complemented by a more holistic approach at both the diachronic and synchronic levels in assessing the authenticity of the emotions of the acting subjects. From a methodological point of view, it is also important to pay attention to the relationships between the explicit and implicit representation of the emotions of the main and secondary characters. Prispevek ob upoštevanju dosedanjih parcialnih študij oblikuje metodologijo, vidike in cilje pionirske raziskave čustev v vseh temeljnih literarnih žanrih starozaveznih knjig. Posebne pozornosti so deležni literarni prikazi čustvenih stanj ženskih likov v starozaveznih pripovedih in poeziji. Ob pregledu dosedanjih prezentacij čustev v Stari zavezi raziskava predlaga celostno analizo izbranih besedil s kombinacijo jezikovno-literarnih, zgodovinsko-antropoloških in etično-moralnih vidikov. Težišče so raziskave čustev v odnosih med moškimi in ženskimi liki ter med človeškimi osebami in Bogom. Analiza izbranih besedil upošteva širša besedilna in medbesedilna razmerja v odnosu do podobnih besedil v Stari zavezi. Prispevek se osredotoča na vprašanje, kako je mogoče parcialne, pogosto abstraktno kognitivne in alegorične metode v vrednotenju avtentičnosti čustev delujočih subjektov dopolniti z bolj celostnim pristopom tako na diahroni kot na sinhroni ravni. V metodološkem pogledu je pomembna tudi pozornost na razmerja med eksplicitno in implicitno prezentacijo čustev glavnih in stranskih likov.

    We examine whether empirical results using text-based sentiment of U.S. annual reports depend on the underlying context, within documents, from which sentiment is measured. We construct a clause-level measure of context, showing that sentiment is driven by many different contexts and that positive and negative sentiment are driven by different contexts. We then construct context-level sentiment measures and examine whether sentiment works as expected at the context-level across four prediction problems. Our results demonstrate that document-level sentiment exhibits significant noise in prediction and suggest that document-level aggregation of sentiment leads to missed empirical nuances. The contexts driving sentiment results vary substantially by outcome, suggesting lower empirical internal validity for document-level sentiment. Using three additional sentiment measures, we document the same inferences, concluding that document-level aggregation likely leads to lower internal validity. Sentiment is thus best applied at the level of specific contexts rather than across whole documents

В работе проведен анализ различных факторов, которые могут оказывать влияние на значение слова в зависимости от контекста, в котором оно используется. Автор подчеркивает важность понимания связи между словом и его контекстом при анализе текста и взаимодействии с языком. В статье рассмотрена роль лексического и грамматического контекста при определении значения слова. Слово может иметь различные значения в разных контекстах. Например, слово «банк» может означать финансовую организацию или место для сохранения денег, в зависимости от контекста, в котором оно используется. Исследование также обращает внимание на дисамбигуацию, то есть процесс определения значения слова на основе его контекста. В заключение подчеркивается, что понимание контекста является важным аспектом при работе с языком и анализе текста.     Polysemy is an essential linguistic process that occurs intensively in language. It plays a significant role in creating phraseological combinations and generating various semantic changes in the language. Polysemy should be distinguished from eurysemy (lexical broadness) and homonymy. Polysemy and eurythmy in language and speech reveal some common properties; however, they are essentially different linguistic phenomena. In Eurysemy, the word's meaning is realized similarly through the context, but it does not undergo significant changes. One of the structural components of a polysemous word is a lexico-semantic variation or separate meaning, which is essential in the study of polysemy. Elimination of polysemy - actualization of a particular meaning of a word is carried out in context. There are two opposing views regarding the nature of a word's linguistic meaning in linguistics. The word itself has no lexical meaning and acquires it only in context. The lexical meaning initially enters the word and is only expressed and recognized in context. A polysemantic word implemented within a set of fixed indicators has a phraseologically related meaning, and each combination of a given polysemantic word with a specific hand becomes a separate phrase. The article deals with polysemy in language generally and in literary works. It explains its significant role in creating phraseological combinations and generating semantic changes in the language and other linguistic features.
