"From the late 1970s into the early 1990s, a generation of female filmmakers took aim at their home countries' popular myths of the frontier. Deeply influenced by second-wave feminism and supported by hard-won new access to governmental and institutional funding and training, their trailblazing films challenged traditionally male genres like the Western. Instead of reinforcing the myths of nationhood often portrayed in such films-invariably featuring a lone white male hero pitted against the "savage" and "uncivilized" native terrain-these filmmakers constructed counternarratives centering on women and marginalized communities. In place of rugged cowboys violently removing indigenous peoples to make the frontier safe for their virtuous wives and daughters, these filmmakers told the stories of colonial and postcolonial societies from a female and/or subaltern point of view. Herstories on Screen is a transnational study of feature narrative films from Australia, Canada, the United States, and New Zealand/Aotearoa that deconstruct settler-colonial myths. Kathleen Cummins offers in-depth readings of ten works by a diverse range of women filmmakers including Jane Campion, Julie Dash, Merata Mita, Tracey Moffat, and Anne Wheeler. She reveals how they skillfully deploy genre tropes and popular storytelling conventions in order to critique master narratives of feminine domesticity and purity and depict women and subaltern people performing acts of agency and resistance. Cummins details the ways in which second-wave feminist theory and aesthetics informed these filmmakers' efforts to debunk idealized Anglo-Saxon femininity and motherhood and lay bare gendered and sexual violence and colonial oppression"--

Churchmen feared the excitation of male lust; feminists decried the idealization of a body type that devalued the majority of women. This history of Hollywood's treatment of women's bodies traces the full span of the motion picture era. Primitive peepshow images of burlesque dancers gave way to the "artistic" nudity of the 1910s when model Audrey Munson and swimmer Annette Kellerman contended for the title of American Venus. Clara Bow personified the qualified sexual freedom of the 1920s flapper. Jean Harlow, Mae West and the scantily clad chorus girls of the early 1930s provoked the Legion of Decency to demand the creation of a Production Code Administration that turned saucy Betty Boop into a housewife. Things loosened up during World War II when Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth ruled the screen. The postwar years saw the blonde bombshells and "mammary madness" of the 1950s while the 1960's brought bikini-clad sex kittens. With the replacement of the Production Code by a ratings system in 1968, nudity and sex scenes proliferated in the R-rated movies of the 1970s and 1980s. Recent movies, often directed by women, have pointed the way toward a more egalitarian future. Finally, the #MeToo movement and the fall of Harvey Weinstein have forced the industry to confront its own sexism.     Cada vez es mayor el número de creadoras que se enfrentan al cultivo de lo fantástico, ya sea en narrativa, teatro, cine, TV, cómic y otras artes, autoras que se insertan en una larga tradición que, sin embargo, ha sido habitualmente minusvalorada o incluso olvidada salvo honrosas excepciones, lo que ha implicado su escasa presencia en los cánones literarios y culturales por no responder a los valores patriarcales y claramente discriminatorios que, a su vez, han marcado su construcción. Esa marginación ha implicado también, por comparación con lo ocurrido con los autores masculinos, una lamentable escasez de investigaciones sobre las creadoras fantásticas, sobre todo en relación a sus manifestaciones en ámbitos artísticos aparentemente reservados a los creadores, como son el cine, la TV o el cómic, lo que afecta negativamente al conocimiento tanto del estricto panorama de lo fantástico como de la producción cultural realizada por mujeres Se hace necesario, pues, reivindicar la obra de las creadoras fantásticas, potenciar su visibilización y, al mismo tiempo, fomentar la recuperación de multitud de obras que han quedado fuera del canon o, como decíamos, que han sido minusvaloradas. Ese es el objetivo primordial de este volumen, compuesto de diez trabajos en los que se estudia la obra de diversas autoras fundamentales en el cultivo de lo fantástico y terrorífico, como son las narradoras Mary Shelley, George Sand, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Shirley Jackson o María Luis Bombal, la directora y guionista Lucile Hadžihalilović, y la creadora de cómic Emily Carroll. Un recorrido que demuestra la variedad y la incuestionable vitalidad de estas autoras, a la vez que evidencia cómo muchas de ellas han abierto nuevos caminos y han desarrollado temas y formas ausentes o poco explorados en las obras fantásticas de los autores masculinos.     From the late 1970s into the early 1990s, a generation of female filmmakers took aim at their home countries’ popular myths of the frontier. Deeply influenced by second-wave feminism and supported by hard-won access to governmental and institutional funding and training, their trailblazing films challenged traditionally male genres like the Western. Instead of reinforcing the myths of nationhood often portrayed in such films—invariably featuring a lone white male hero pitted against the "savage" and "uncivilized" native terrain—these filmmakers constructed counternarratives centering on women and marginalized communities. In place of rugged cowboys violently removing indigenous peoples to make the frontier safe for their virtuous wives and daughters, these filmmakers told the stories of colonial and postcolonial societies from a female and/or subaltern point of view.Herstories on Screen is a transnational study of feature narrative films from Australia, Canada, the United States, and New Zealand/Aotearoa that deconstruct settler-colonial myths. Kathleen Cummins offers in-depth readings of ten works by a diverse range of women filmmakers including Jane Campion, Julie Dash, Merata Mita, Tracey Moffatt, and Anne Wheeler. She reveals how they skillfully deploy genre tropes and popular storytelling conventions in order to critique master narratives of feminine domesticity and purity and depict women and subaltern people performing acts of agency and resistance. Cummins details the ways in which second-wave feminist theory and aesthetics informed these filmmakers’ efforts to debunk idealized Anglo-Saxon femininity and motherhood and lay bare gendered and sexual violence and colonial oppression

Esa marginación ha implicado también, por comparación con lo ocurrido con los autores masculinos, una lamentable escasez de investigaciones sobre las creadoras fantásticas, sobre todo en relación a sus manifestaciones en ámbitos artísticos aparentemente reservados a los creadores, como son el cine, la TV o el cómic, lo que afecta negativamente al conocimiento tanto del estricto panorama de lo fantástico como de la producción cultural realizada por mujeres Se hace necesario, pues, reivindicar la obra de las creadoras fantásticas, potenciar su visibilización y, al mismo tiempo, fomentar la recuperación de multitud de obras que han quedado fuera del canon o, como decíamos, que han sido minusvaloradas. Ese es el objetivo primordial de este volumen, compuesto de diez trabajos en los que se estudia la obra de diversas autoras fundamentales en el cultivo de lo fantástico y terrorífico, como son las narradoras Mary Shelley, George Sand, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Shirley Jackson o María Luis Bombal, la directora y guionista Lucile Hadžihalilović, y la creadora de cómic Emily Carroll. Un recorrido que demuestra la variedad y la incuestionable vitalidad de estas autoras, a la vez que evidencia cómo muchas de ellas han abierto nuevos caminos y han desarrollado temas y formas ausentes o poco explorados en las obras fantásticas de los autores masculinos. Ferber was one of America's most controversial popular historians, a writer whose uniquely feminist, multiracial view of the national past deliberately clashed with traditional narratives of white masculine power. Hollywood paid premium sums to adapt her novels, creating some of the most memorable films of the studio era—among them Show Boat, Cimarron, and Giant. Her historical fiction resonated with Hollywood's interest in prestigious historical filmmaking aimed principally, but not exclusively, at female audiences. In Edna Ferber's Hollywood, J. E. Smyth explores the research, writing, marketing, reception, and production histories of Hollywood's Ferber franchise. Smyth tracks Ferber's working relationships with Samuel Goldwyn, Leland Hayward, George Stevens, and James Dean; her landmark contract negotiations with Warner Bros.; and the controversies surrounding Giant's critique of Jim-Crow Texas. But Edna Ferber's Hollywood is also the study of the historical vision of an American outsider—a woman, a Jew, a novelist with few literary pretensions, an unashamed middlebrow who challenged the prescribed boundaries among gender, race, history, and fiction.
