    Trance states, prophesying, convulsions, fasting, and other physical manifestations were often regarded as signs that a person was seized by spirits. In a book that sets out the prehistory of the early modern European witch craze, Nancy Caciola shows how medieval people decided whom to venerate as a saint infused with the spirit of God and whom to avoid as a demoniac possessed of an unclean spirit. This process of discrimination, known as the discernment of spirits, was central to the religious culture of Western Europe between 1200 and 1500. Since the outward manifestations of benign and malign possession were indistinguishable, a highly ambiguous set of bodily features and behaviors were carefully scrutinized by observers. Attempts to make decisions about individuals who exhibited supernatural powers were complicated by the fact that the most intense exemplars of lay spirituality were women, and the "fragile sex" was deemed especially vulnerable to the snares of the devil. Assessments of women's spirit possessions often oscillated between divine and demonic interpretations. Ultimately, although a few late medieval women visionaries achieved the prestige of canonization, many more were accused of possession by demons. Caciola analyzes a broad array of sources from saints' lives to medical treatises, exorcists' manuals to miracle accounts, to find that observers came to rely on the discernment of bodies rather than seeking to distinguish between divine and demonic possession in purely spiritual terms

    This book is a study of the contribution of women to the development of the newly legitimate Christian church in the twilight of the Western Roman Empire. There are many women noted for the example of their life in this period, regarded amongst the luminaries of the day; but while their male mentors, the patristic authors have retained their fame, the women who surrounded and influenced them have all but disappeared from sight. The women themselves are partly to blame for this, for in order to be pious it made sense to disguise one's sex sometimes literally: Dr Cloke gives examples of those whose sex was discovered only after their death - they sought to become androgynous, a third sex before God. This book looks at a multitude of examples in some detail and takes an overview of the role of Christian women at this time. It should appeal not only to historians, classicists and theologians, but also to anyone who takes a general interest in the changing status of women over the the centuries.

    Catechisms and Women's Writing in Seventeenth-Century England is a study of early modern women's literary use of catechizing. Paula McQuade examines original works composed by women - both in manuscript and print, as well as women's copying and redacting of catechisms - and construction of these materials from other sources. By studying female catechists, McQuade shows how early modern women used the power and authority granted to them as mothers to teach religious doctrine, to demonstrate their linguistic skills, to engage sympathetically with Catholic devotional texts, and to comment on matters of contemporary religious and political import - activities that many scholars have considered the sole prerogative of clergymen. This book addresses the question of women's literary production in early modern England, demonstrating that reading and writing of catechisms were crucial sites of women's literary engagements during this time. Eventually Christians took part in a cross-cultural shift toward viewing virginity as something that could be perceived in women's sex organs. Treating virginity as anatomical brought both benefits and costs. As a whole, the authors offer a cross-section of contributions, influences, and activities by women in matters of faith in early modern England, focusing on women's creative undoings and reimaginings during a long period of reform in religion and the ramifications of these activities well beyond their own time. The essays explore the inspirations for and expressions of women's actions whether those actions were ultimately intended to serve the conservative or evangelical cause and provide a sample of the consequences and contradictions inherent in women's reimagining of religious and gender boundaries as these manifested internally in the individual woman to effect a renegotiation of her own gender and religious identity" --

    An der Braut Christi zeigt sich die christliche Revolution: die Umwälzung der herrschenden, gewalttätigen Geschlechter-, Klassen- und Rassenverhältnisse. Wie an keiner anderen Figur lässt sich an ihr die Liebes- und Erkenntnislehre des Christentums illustrieren. Die Brandmarkung der durch sie symbolisierten Lebensform als pervers und hysterisch war Ziel aller Reformatoren von Luther bis Zola. Doch ist die Liebe in der Moderne ohne die Braut Christi nicht zu denken. Als Figur unendlichen Begehrens zeitigt die sponsa eine mystische Liebessprache, eine Brautmystik, die sich über das Mittelalter bis zu Baudelaire und Proust fortschreibt. Die sponsa ist als genuin textuelles Phänomen lesbar, an dem sich Exegese und das Verhältnis von Buchstäblichkeit und Allegorese neu verhandeln lassen. Das Lektüreschicksal der sponsa Christi ist unter den theoretischen Voraussetzungen der neueren Geschichtsforschung zu einem bedeutenden Paradigma geworden. An diesem lassen sich die komplexen Verflechtungen von religions-, kunst- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Aspekten der konfliktbeladenen Ausprägung von Geschlechterdifferenz neu abschätzen und ablesen
