    We use matched employer-employee data from Sweden to study the role of the firm in affecting the stochastic properties of wages. Our model accounts for endogenous participation and mobility decisions. We find that firm-specific permanent productivity shocks transmit to individual wages, but the effect is mostly concentrated among the high-skilled workers. For low-skilled the pass-through is similar for temporary and permanent firm-level shocks and the magnitude smaller. The updates to worker-firm specific match effects over the life of a firm-worker relationship are small. Substantial growth in earnings variance over the life cycle for high-skilled workers is driven by firms. In particular, cross-sectional wage variances by age 55 are roughly one-third higher relative to a scenario with no pass-through of firm shocks onto wages.

    We document the consequences of losing a job across countries using a harmonized research design applied to seven matched employer-employee datasets. Workers in Denmark and Sweden experience the lowest earnings declines following job displacement, while workers in Italy, Spain, and Portugal experience losses three times as high. French and Austrian workers face earnings losses somewhere in between. Key to these differences is that Southern European workers are less likely to find employment following displacement. Loss of employerspecific wage premiums explains a substantial portion of wage losses in all countries.

    In this paper we develop a novel semi-nonparametric panel copula model with external covariates for the study of wage rank dynamics. We focus on nonlinear dependence between the current and lagged worker's ranks in the wage residuals distribution, conditionally on individual characteristics. We show the asymptotic normality of the Sieve estimator for our preferred mobility measure, which is an irregular functional of both the finite- and infinite-dimensional parameters, in the double asymptotics with N,T → ∞. We derive an analytical bias correction for the incidental parameters bias induced by the individual fixed-effects. We apply our model to US data and we find that relative mobility at the bottom of the distribution is high for workers with a college degree and some experience. On the contrary, less-educated individuals are likely to remain stuck at the bottom of the wage rank distribution year after year.
