    We investigate the effect of the refugee inflow between 2014 and 2017 on voting for the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the national parliamentary election in 2017 in Germany. Drawing on unique small-scale data enables us to distinguish between the contact theory, captured by the inflow of refugees into the immediate neighborhood (1km x 1km), and county-level (NUTS 3) effects, which might pick-up other, broader factors such as media coverage or specific county-level policies. We alleviate concerns of an endogenous refugee allocation by a shift-share instrument. Our results indicate that the contact theory is valid in urban West Germany, i. e., higher refugee inflows in West German urban neighborhoods decrease the shares of far-right voting, while there is no robust evidence of a relationship between refugee inflow and far-right vote shares in East Germany and rural West Germany. Wir analysieren die Auswirkungen der Zuwanderung von Geflüchteten zwischen 2014 und 2017 auf das Wahlergebnis der rechtspopulistischen Partei Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) bei der Bundestagswahl 2017. Die Verwendung einzigartiger, kleinräumiger Daten ermöglicht es uns, zwischen Auswirkungen des direkten Kontakts, d.h. des Zustroms von Flüchtlingen in die unmittelbare Nachbarschaft (1km x 1km), und Effekten auf Kreisebene (NUTS 3), welche andere, umfassendere Faktoren wie die Medienberichterstattung oder Lokalpolitik aufgreifen könnten, zu unterscheiden. Einer möglichen endogenen Wohnortentscheidung der Geflüchteten wird durch ein Shift-Share-Instrument Rechnung getragen. Unsere Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Kontakttheorie im urbanen Raum in Westdeutschland zutrifft, d.h. dass ein höherer Zustrom von Geflüchteten in westdeutschen Stadtvierteln den Anteil der rechtspopulistischen Wählerschaft senkt, während wir keine robusten Hinweise auf einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Zustrom von Geflüchteten und rechtspopulistischen Wähleranteilen in Ostdeutschland und im ländlichen Westdeutschland finden.

    Using a novel regional database covering over 200 elections in several European countries, this paper provides new empirical evidence on the political consequences of fiscal consolidations. To identify exogenous reductions in regional public spending, we use a Bartik-type instrument that combines regional sensitivities to changes in national government expenditures with narrative national consolidation episodes. Fiscal consolidations lead to a significant increase in extreme parties' vote share, lower voter turnout, and a rise in political fragmentation. We highlight the close relationship between detrimental economic developments and voters' support for extreme parties by showing that austerity induces severe economic costs through lowering GDP, employment, private investment, and wages. Austerity-driven recessions amplify the political costs of economic downturns considerably by increasing distrust in the political environment.

    How do health crises affect election results? We combine a panel of election results from 1893-1933 with spatial heterogeneity in excess mortality due to the 1918 Influenza to assess the pandemic's effect on voting behavior across German constituencies. Applying a dynamic differences-in-differences approach, we find that areas with higher influenza mortality saw a lasting shift towards left-wing parties. We argue that pandemic intensity increased the salience of public health policy, prompting voters to reward parties signaling competence in health issues. Alternative explanations such as pandemic-induced economic hardship, punishment of incumbents for inadequate policy responses, or polarization of the electorate towards more extremist parties are not supported by our findings.

    Bouton et al. (2022) compare the properties of majority run-off and plurality rule elections in a laboratory setting, focusing on Duverger's prediction that plurality rule leads to higher levels of strategic voting. They produce a causal estimate of the difference in incidence of strategic voting across systems, finding more strategic voting under the plurality rule. However, they find that coordination is only higher under the plurality rule when voters are sufficiently divided over which candidate they prefer. They conclude that differences in electoral outcomes and voters' welfare are modest. We are able to computationally reproduce the original study's main findings using the authors' replication package. The replication package contained both raw data and a cleaned dataset, but did not include a script for cleaning the raw data or a codebook to make sense of it. Therefore, the majority of our work focused on producing code to evaluate and clean the authors' raw data. The authors sent a very helpful response to an earlier draft of this report and their communication improved the quality of our replication effort.
