    With Faithful Translators Jaime Goodrich offers the first in-depth examination of women's devotional translations and of religious translations in general within early modern England. Placing female translators such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, alongside their male counterparts, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Philip Sidney, Goodrich argues that both male and female translators constructed authorial poses that allowed their works to serve four distinct cultural functions: creating privacy, spreading propaganda, providing counsel, and representing religious groups. Ultimately, Faithful Translators calls for a reconsideration of the apparent simplicity of "faithful" translations and aims to reconfigure perceptions of early modern authorship, translation, and women writers.

    Juan de la Cueva de Garoza (Sevilla, 1543-1612). España. Vivió en Cuenca, en Canarias y en México entre 1574 y 1577; a su regreso a España empezó a escribir dramas. Se inspiró en el Romancero y en la mitología grecolatina y adoptó temas históricos y legendarios. Escribió además veinticinco sonetos, varias églogas, una elegía, una sextina, tres madrigales y dos odas, que aparecen en el cancionero Flores de varia poesía. El Ejemplar poético, escrito hacia 1606 y dividido en tres epístolas, es un arte poética manierista en tercetos encadenados. Otras obras suyas son Viaje de Sannio, poema de crítica literaria; La Muracinda, una narración épica burlesca de una venganza entre perros y gatos en endecasílabos blancos, el poema mitológico en octavas reales Llanto de Venus en la muerte de Adonis, y la narración mitológica burlesca en octavas reales Los amores de Marte y Venus. Una colección de sus poemas fue publicada como Obras de Juan de la Cueva (Sevilla, 1582) y sus romances aparecen en Coro Febeo de Romances historiales (1587). También le tentó la épica culta, y escribió el poema en veinticuatro cantos La conquista de la Bética (Sevilla, 1603), que describe la conquista de Sevilla por Fernando III el Santo. Se conservan además unas catorce piezas dramáticas en cuatro jornadas, de las cuales las más relevantes son El infamador, cuyo protagonista prefigura el arquetipo del Don Juan clásico y que introduce personajes alegóricos, El Saco de Roma, La muerte del Rey Don Sancho, La libertad de España por Bernardo de Carpio y la Tragedia de los siete Infantes de Lara. Estas junto a otras fueron publicadas en 1583 con el título Primera parte de las tragedias y comedias de Juan de la Cueva. Biographische Informationen Juan de la Cueva de Garoza (Sevilla, 1543-1612).     From 1660 to c 1700, England set her eyes on Spain and on the seventeenth-century Spanish comedy of intrigue with an aim to import new plots and characters that might appeal to the Anglo-Saxon audience. As a consequence, Hispanic drama in translation enjoyed a period of relative popularity never to be repeated until the turn of the twenty-first century. By analysing a corpus of translated classical Spanish plays intended for performance, this book aims to show the strategies chosen by the translators concerned. Hence, many aspects present in the source texts are naturalized in order to meet the demands of the target culture, while others are kept to clarify the "Spanishness" of the text. This study draws significant conclusions on the validity of these mechanisms within the specific framework of Drama Translation Studies.
