In this book, scholars from across the world explore the appearance, portrayal and significance of the suburb on film. By the mid-20th Century, supported by changes in transportation, suburbs became the primary location of entire national populations and films about the suburbs began to concertedly reflect those suburbs' significance as well as their increasingly lively cultures. Suburbia very soon became filmurbia, as films of the suburbs and those made in the suburbs reflected both the positive and the negative aspects of burgeoning suburban life. Film-makers explored the existences of new suburbanites, their interests, their newly emerging neighbourhood practices, their foibles, their fantasies and their hopes. Whether depicting love, ambition, commerce, family, home or horror, whether traveling to or living in suburban spaces, whether exhibiting beauty, brazenness or brutality, the films of suburbia capture human life in all its diverse guises

The record of French cinema's many forays into the Paris suburbs is far more than a prehistory of the 'film de banlieue'. Decades before the emergence--around 1995--of a self-styled 'hood' film in France, filmmakers looked beyond the gates of the City of Light for inspiration and content. In the jumble of spaces surrounding Paris they found an inexhaustible reservoir of forms, landscapes and social types in which to anchor their fictions. Idyllic or menacing, wide-open or claustrophobic, these locales served divergent ideological and aesthetic programmes. From the bourgeois villas and vacant lots of Louis Feuillade's serials of the 1910s and the bucolic watering holes of 1930s poetic realism to the vast post-war housing estates showcased by Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Tati and Maurice Pialat, the gritty noir décors of Jean-Pierre Melville or the sleek, post-modern new towns shot by Éric Rohmer, the Paris suburbs came to form a key site in teh national imaginary. For the first time in English, the fifteen contributors to this volume address key aspects of this long screen history, which intersects with themes central to French cultural modernity, including class conflict, leisure, boredom, alienation and anti-authoritarianism. Diverse in focus and expansive in scope, Screening the Paris suburbs will interest students and scholars of French film, cultural studies and urban/suburban studies--back cover

This is a study of the representation of suburban space in US film and television. Suburbia. Say the word and a stream of images pass before your eyes: white picket fence, neatly mowed lawns, winding roads nicely lined with trees, pastel tinted bungalows, bored housewives, conspicuous consumption. We all know what the suburbs are about. Or do we? This book looks again at the filmic and televised spaces we think we know so well. How are these spaces built up? What is it that makes us recognize them as suburbs? How do they function? Exploring the hometowns of, amongst others, Desperate Housewives, The Simpsons, Pleasantville and Brick, Scenes from the Suburbs examines what it means to be suburban today. It focuses exclusively on cinematic and televisual representations of US suburbs. It uses the lens of the suburb to view canonical films and television programmes in a completely different light. It integrates theory and close textual analysis to come to a new understanding of the construction of visual landscapes
