The fictional domains of Yoknapatawpha County and Jefferson, Mississippi, are not simply imagined communities but imaginative geographies of remarkable complexity and detail, as evidenced by the maps Faulkner created of his "apocryphal" county. Exploring the diverse functions of space in Faulkner's artistic vision, the eleven essays in Faulkner's Geographies delve deep into Yoknapatawpha but also reach beyond it, to uncover unsuspected connections and flows linking local, regional, national, hemispheric, and global geographies in Faulkner's writings. Individual contributions examine the influence of the plantation as a land-use regime on Faulkner's imagination of north Mississippi's geography; the emergence of "micro-Souths" as a product of modern migratory patterns in the urban North of Faulkner's fiction; the enlistment of the author's work in the geopolitics of the cultural Cold War during the 1950s; the historical and literary affiliations between Faulkner's Deep South and Greater Mexico; the local and idiosyncratic as alternatives to region and nation; the unique intersection of regional and metropolitan geographies that Faulkner encountered as a novice writer immersed in the literary culture of New Orleans; the uses of feminist geography to trace the interplay of gender, space, and movement; and the circulation of Caribbean and "Black South" spaces and itineraries through Faulkner's masterpiece, Absalom, Absalom!By bringing new attention to the function of space, place, mapping, and movement in his literature, Faulkner's Geographies seeks to redraw the very boundaries of Faulkner studies"--

    Le présent volume contient les Actes du colloque international sur les " Représentations et conceptions de l'espace dans la culture médiévale " qui s'est déroulé du 19 au 21 octobre 2009 sous les auspices de l'Institut d'Etudes Médiévales de l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse). La participation de spécialistes de rang international à cette rencontre atteste du vif intérêt que suscitent aujourd'hui dans la communauté scientifique la perception et la compréhension médiévales de l'espace. En effet, d'importantes études menées au cours de la dernière décennie auront éclairé sous un nouveau jour la signification complexe de l'espace dans la civilisation du Moyen Age latin, qui se décline sur plusieurs registres : social, économique, politique, culturel et religieux. Loin d'apaiser la curiosité scientifique, les études récentes sur ces diverses facettes de l'espace médiéval ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons, suscité des interrogations nouvelles, mis à jour un vaste chantier d'investigation sur les rapports aux lieux et à l'espace dans la vie et la culture du Moyen Age européen. Le colloque visait donc à explorer davantage quelques pistes de recherche. Il a réuni des chercheurs de pays, de langues, de cultures et de domaines scientifiques différents. Il a ainsi donné lieu à un dialogue animé qui aura permis de confronter et d'enrichir mutuellement les visions de l'espace médiéval des spécialistes de l'histoire, de la philosophie, de l'histoire de l'art et de la littérature

    Um 1800 werden die ,Räume des Inneren', werden geistige und psychische Prozesse, Zustände oder Beziehungen, die sich unmittelbarer Anschauung entziehen, neu symbolisiert und narrativiert: Gehirnhöhlen werden begehbar, subjektivierte Landschaften werden zu phantastischen Bildern des Inneren. Im Gegensatz dazu erfasst der Band des Kolloquiums vor allem die erzählten ,realen' Räume in ihrer Symbolfunktion und der Art ihrer Narrativierung. Es geht dabei um die kulturelle Kodierung von Häusern und Zimmern, Schlössern und Türmen mit ihren Möglichkeiten des Abschließens und der Öffnung durch Fenster und Türen. Jedoch auch die sich öffnenden Räume (die Weite des Meeres, Flusslandschaften und ferne Länder) werden untersucht. Das Moment des Öffnens und Abschließens von Räumen kann die Perspektive von narratologischen Untersuchungen produktiv lenken, so können zum Beispiel Erfahrungen der Grenze die Figurenzeichnung maßgeblich strukturieren. Die Analysen der erzählten Räume/Raumbrüche und Architekturen und ihrer Beziehung zu ihren ,Bewohnern' tragen im Rahmen des gegenwärtig proklamierten spatial oder topographical turn zu einer neuen Vermessung eines sowohl erzähl- und darstellungstechnisch als auch kulturanthropologisch zentralen Komplexes bei
