    Abstract ; Die Arbeit untersucht Thomas Manns schriftstellerische Technik der Gestaltung von Romanfiguren nach Quellen, Vorbildern und Modellen und verwendet zur Beschreibung dieses Verfahrens den Begriff Porträt . Sie geht von der Tatsache aus, dass Thomas Mann auf autobiographische Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen an Verwandte, Freunde, Kollegen oder Zeitgenossen zurückgegriffen sowie Figuren, Szenerien und selbst kleinste Details nach Bildvorlagen gestaltet hat. Dabei geraten vier Bereiche ins Blickfeld, welche die verschiedenen Facetten der porträthaften Gestaltung der Figuren bei Thomas Manns ausmachen: Aus den Reaktionen der Betroffenen und des Umfelds, aus der konkreten Beschreibung der an Vorbildern orientierten Personen im Roman, aus der Analyse der dabei vorgenommenen Verschiebungen und Vertauschungen einzelner Züge sowie aus den Selbstdarstellungen des Autors ergibt sich eine Poetologie des literarischen Porträts. Vor dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Kunstausübung in seinem Umfeld entfaltet sich Thomas Manns Verhältnis zur bildenden Kunst. Essayistische, briefliche oder sonstige Auseinandersetzungen Thomas Manns mit Kunst, Kunsttheorie sowie insbesondere der Gattung Porträt, vor allem aber seine Selbstaussagen und -definitionen lassen poetologische Positionen und Abgrenzungen sichtbar werden. Die vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen, die sich in seinem Werk niederschlagen, manifestieren sich in den Begriffsfeldern Realismus, Wirklichkeits-Wiedergabe und Ähnlichkeit. Die Konzentration auf den Doktor Faustus sowie die Erfassung des gesamten Spektrums der im Roman verwirklichten Formen literarischer Porträts zeitigt eine neuartige Sicht auf die verschiedenen Deutungsebenen, die bislang auf den Roman angewendet wurden. Bei der Untersuchung der verschiedenen Schnittstellen zwischen gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit und literarischer Fiktion wird deutlich, dass das künstlerische Mittel des Porträts nicht nur jeweils dazu beiträgt, die einzelnen Schichten der sinnhaften Struktur zu konstituieren, sondern ein integraler Bestandteil des Romans ist. ; Abstract ; The dissertation examines Thomas Mann s literary technique of basing the characters in his novels on sources, examples and models, and uses the word portrait to describe this process. It is built around the fact that Thomas Mann in his work resorted to autobiographical experiences and memories of relatives, friends, colleagues and contemporaries, and also based figures, scenarios and even the smallest details on original images and pictures. In this context, four areas can be distinguished which account for the various facets of the portrait-like manner in which the characters of Thomas Mann are formed: from the reactions of the person concerned and the surroundings, from the precise description in the novel of the characters based on example, from the analysis of the permutations and combinations of individual features thus undertaken, and from the self-depictions of the author, a poetology of the literary portrait is formed. Against the background of the contemporary practice of art in his environs, Thomas Mann s affinity to fine arts blossomed. Not only Thomas Mann s essays, letters or other musings on art, art theory and especially genre portrayals, but above all his own statements and definitions allow poetological positions and demarcations to become visible. The numerous fluctuating relationships reflected in his works are manifested in the conceptual fields of realism, replication of reality, and similarity. By concentrating on Doctor Faustus while charting the entire spectrum of literary portrait forms applied in the novel, a whole new way of looking at the various levels of meaning used heretofore in the novel may be obtained. An examination of the various interfaces between social reality and literary fiction makes it apparent that the use of an artistic vehicle such as the portrait not only helps provide the individual layers with a meaningful structure, but is also in itself an integral part of the novel.

In these days of emancipation and assumed equality (in some countries at any rate) it is as well to remember the very recent past and to look forward to the future, for all girls will have, certain problems to face just because they are girls. It is best to be prepared. The anthology was chosen and organised for girls who were taking English, either for General Studies or in preparation for University. The extracts cover a wide range of styles and periods, and were selected both as representative of their time and as good examples of prose. Love, sex, marriage, motherhood and the wider role of women in society are among the topics covered, and there is an ample list of suggestions for further readings, biographical notes on the writers and suggested questions for discussions or essay-writing

In Digital Approaches to Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies Pietro Maria Liuzzo discusses with practical examples, for the scholars of this field with little or no digital competences, how to exploit openly accessible data in the Web, based on the experience of the Beta maṣāḥeft (2016?) and TraCES (2014-2019) projects based at Universität Hamburg. Each chapter of the book focuses on specific aspects related to different types of written artefacts, to look into features of codicology, literary tradition, distribution in space, and historical geography. Lexicographic resources are also discussed and exploratory queries are presented and commented in order to provide the reader not only with results but with the means to reproduce these examples on the same or on other datasets. Special attention is given to ways in which openly accessible and collaboratively edited data pertaining to the manuscript traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea can be used by researchers in connection with other openly available datasets. This book aims at rising curiosity for the use of TEI and LOD among specialists in Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies, but also provides scholars in Digital Humanities with discussions of the principles driving the choices made for the digital products of the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies

    "Lollard" is the name given to followers of John Wyclif, the English dissident theologian who was dismissed from Oxford University in 1381 for his arguments regarding the eucharist. A forceful and influential critic of the ecclesiastical status quo in the late fourteeth century, Wyclif's thought was condemned at the Council of Constance in 1415. While lollardy has attracted much attention in recent years, much of what we think we know about this English religious movement is based on records of heresy trials and anti-lollard chroniclers. In Feeling Like Saints, Fiona Somerset demonstrates that this approach has limitations. A better basis is the five hundred or so manuscript books from the period (1375-1530) containing materials translated, composed, or adapted by lollard writers themselves. These writings provide rich evidence for how lollard writers collaborated with one another and with their readers to produce a distinctive religious identity based around structures of feeling. Lollards wanted to feel like saints. From Wyclif they drew an extraordinarily rigorous ethic of mutual responsibility that disregarded both social status and personal risk. They recalled their commitment to this ethic by reading narratives of physical suffering and vindication, metaphorically martyring themselves by inviting scorn for their zeal, and enclosing themselves in the virtues rather than the religious cloister. Shakespeare's comedies adapted the styles of wit, character types, motifs of enclosed spaces, and other narrative materials of the Italian tradition for the Elizabethan and Jacobean stage, and investigated social norms and roles through a conversation carried out in narrative and drama. Arguing that Shakespeare's comic heroines express the playwright's reading of the novella, particularly his comic vision at the turn of the seventeenth century, this book demonstrates how such a vision valued women's authority and consent in the comic conclusion. The representation of female authority in novella collections is complex and paradoxical, as the stories portray women not only in the roles of witty plotters and storytellers but also through a poetics of enclosed spaces - including trunks, chests, caskets, graves, cups, and beds. These spaces are not as confining or simple as they may first appear. The relatively open-ended rhetorical situation of early modern English theatre and the dialogic form and narrative material available in the novella tradition combine to help create the complex female characters in Shakespeare's plays and a new form of English comedy."--

    This volume constitutes the first large-scale collaborative reflection on Xenophon’s Anabasis, gathering experts on Greek historiography and Xenophon. It is structured in three sections: the first section provides a linear reading of the Anabasis through chapters on select episodes (from Book 1 through Book 7), including the opening, Cyrus’ characterisation, the meeting of Socrates and Xenophon, Xenophon’s leadership, the marches through Armenia and along the Black Sea coast and the service under Seuthes in Thrace.The second section offers an in-depth exploration of hitherto overlooked recurrent themes. Based on new approaches and scholarly trends, it focuses on topics such as the concept of friendship, the speeches of characters other than Xenophon, the suffering of the human body, the role of rumour and misrepresentation, and the depiction of emotions.The third section offers a more thorough investigation of the manifold reception of this work (in Antiquity, Byzantium, Renaissance, modern period, in cinema studies and illustrations).Finally, in acknowledgement of the Anabasis’ long history as a pedagogical text, the volume contains an envoi on the importance and benefits of teaching Xenophon and the Anabasis, more specifically
