    This text proposes a rereading of the Decameron that traces the female figures - 'constrained' as we are told in the Proem, by the 'wishes', 'desires' and 'orders' of fathers, mothers, brothers and husbands - in their attempt to open up areas of personal life. The possession of the female body, considered as part of the family property in a social context governed by a commercial rationale, is an instrument of the violence characterising all social relations, which Boccaccio indicates as a cause for the wrath of God that exploded in the plague of 1348. Moreover, their bodies also become an instrument in the hands of the women themselves when they decide - with all the ambiguity which the context imposed (even on the author) - to repossess the same to use it as a weapon of revenge, an occasion of joy or a gift of love. Il testo propone una rilettura del Decameron seguendo le figure femminili "costrette", come dice il Proemio, "da' voleri, da' piaceri, da' comandamenti de' padri, delle madri, de' fratelli e de' mariti" nei loro tentativi di aprire spazi di vita propria. Il possesso del corpo delle donne, parte del patrimonio familiare nel contesto sociale guidato dalla ragion di mercatura, è uno strumento della violenza che connota tutti i rapporti sociali, e che il Boccaccio indica come causa dell'ira di Dio esplosa nella peste del 1348. Ma diviene anche strumento delle donne quando decidono con tutta l'ambiguità che il contesto imponeva (anche all'Autore) di riappropriarsene per farne arma di vendetta, occasione di gioia, o dono d'amore.

    What is the use of research in public debates and policy-making on immigration and integration? Why are there such large gaps between migration debates and migration realities, and how can they be reduced? Bridging the Gaps: Linking Research to Public Debates and Policy-making on Migration and Integration provides a unique set of testimonies and analyses of these questions by researchers and policy experts who have been deeply involved in attempts to link social science research to public policies. Bridging the Gap argues that we must go beyond the prevailing focus on the research–policy nexus by considering how the media, public opinion, and other dimensions of public debates can interact with research and policy processes. The chapters provide theoretical analyses and personal assessments of the successes and failures of past efforts to link research to public debates and policy-making on migration and integration in six different countries—Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States—as well as in European and global governance debates. Contrary to common public perceptions and political demands, Bridging the Gaps argues that all actors contributing to research, public debates, and policy-making should recognize that migration, integration, and related decision-making are highly complex issues, and that there are no quick fixes to what are often enduring policy dilemmas. When the different actors understand and appreciate each other’s primary aims and constraints, such common understandings can pave the way for improved policy-making processes and better public policies that deal more effectively with the real challenges of migration and integration.

    The book gives an intriguing insight into how young people in Estonia, twenty years after the establishment of democracy, perceive their own role as citizens. It does so in a theoretical framework that stresses the embeddedness of the civic experiences in a media-dominated environment, thus closely linking civic and media experiences. Based on the analysis of both qualitative interview data and a relatively new method of using the internet as a complementary tool for engaging with open-ended diaries, the study explores the extent to which young citizens experience the media as being interwoven with their everyday lives and, in fact, constitutive of their social reality as citizens. With its particular focus on young Estonians, i.e. on a generation that has been brought up in a context of rapid political, economic and social change and that is well-known for its fascination with new communication technologies, the book is a valuable contribution to the growing international research on media and civic experiences.

    Empathie gilt als Grundlage moralischen Handelns – und damit selbst als gut. Sieht man aber genauer hin, erweist sich die Fähigkeit, »sich in andere Menschen hineinzuversetzen«, auch als Voraussetzung für gezielte Erniedrigungen und Grausamkeiten. Zudem hat selbst das wohlmeinende Mitgefühl zahlreiche unbeabsichtigte Konsequenzen. Aus diesen Gründen sind es gerade die dunklen, bisher verdrängten Aspekte der Empathie, die auf dem Weg zu einer besseren Gesellschaft in den Blick genommen werden müssen. Fritz Breithaupt lädt seine Leser dazu ein, diese Seiten zu bedenken oder gar an sich selbst zu entdecken, und führt uns dabei von Narzissmus und Nietzsche bis zu den Helikopter-Eltern und Angela Merkels Flüchtlingspolitik. „Wozu sind Menschen fähig, weil sie über Mitgefühl verfügen? In "Die dunklen Seiten der Empathie" konzentriert sich der Kognitionswissenschaftler Fritz Breithaupt auf schlechte Taten in Verbindung mit dieser positiv besetzten Empfindung... Fritz Breithaupt ist Literatur-, Kultur- und Kognitionswissenschaftler und unterrichtet seit vielen Jahren in den USA. Als er dort dieses Buch schrieb, verfolgte er den amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlkampf. Donald Trump lieferte ihm Anschauungsmaterial für die These, dass Empathie das Freund-Feind-Denken fördert, da Empathie immer eine von zwei Seiten bevorzugt. Mit anderen Worten: Wir handeln vielleicht nicht moralisch, weil wir Empathie empfinden. Sondern wir moralisieren, weil wir vorschnell Partei ergriffen haben und voreingenommen sind.     It has become commonplace to employ dialogue-based approaches in producing and communicating knowledge in diverse fields. Here, “dialogue” has become a buzzword that promises democratic, participatory processes of mutual learning and knowledge co-production. But what does “dialogue” actually entail in the fields in which it is practised and how can we analyse those practices in ways that take account of their complexities? The Promise of Dialogue presents a novel theoretical framework for analysing the dialogic turn in the production and communication of knowledge that builds bridges across three research traditions - dialogic communication theory, action research, and science and technology studies.It also provides an empirically rich account of the dialogic turn through case studies of how dialogue is enacted in the fields of planned communication, public engagement with science and collaborative research. A critical, reflexive approach is taken that interrogates the complexities, tensions and dilemmas inherent in the enactment of “dialogue” and is oriented towards further developing dialogic practices from a position normatively supportive of the dialogic turn.

    "Today, churches, political parties, trade unions, and even national sports teams are no guarantee of social solidarity. At a time when these traditional institutions of social cohesion seem increasingly ill-equipped to defend against the disintegration of sociability, K. Ludwig Pfeiffer encourages us to reflect on the cultural and literary history of social gatherings - from the ancient Athenian symposium to its successor forms throughout Western history. From medieval troubadours to Parisian salons and beyond, Pfeiffer conceptualizes the symposium as an institution of sociability with a central societal function. As such he reinforces a programmatic theoretical move in the sociology of Georg Simmel and builds on theories of social interaction and communication characterized by Max Weber, George Herbert Mead, Talcott Parsons, Jürgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann, and others. To make his argument, Pfeiffer draws on the work of a range of writers, including Dr. Samuel Johnson and Diderot, Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust, Dorothy Sayers, Joseph Conrad, and Stieg Larsson. Ultimately, Pfeiffer concludes that if modern societies do not find ways of reinstating elements of the Athenian symposium, especially those relating to its ritualized ease, decency and style of interaction, they will have to cope with increasing violence and decreasing social cohesion"--
