    eng: In Tyrol, the intensive competition between the ski resorts is leading to an increasing number of mergers and expansions of ski areas in order to offer skiers a greater number of slopes. Especially small ski resorts often do not have the financial means to expand or merge with other ski resorts. As a consequence, many small ski resorts are struggling to survive and have to find niches to gain or maintain competitive advantages. However, managers and stakeholders face the problem that there is no scientific basis for strategy development of small ski resorts. Research in the field of ski destination choice has thus far focused generally on the most important attributes and factors in the decision-making process of skiers. In order to better understand the motivations of skiers to visit small ski resorts, motivation theory was applied to uncover the underlying needs and motives of skiers. Moreover, in order to understand the repetitive behavior skiers visiting the same resort show, the concept of place attachment was used to investigate the emotional and symbolic bonds skiers might develop with small ski resorts. The results of the study could be of interest for managers and stakeholders in small ski resorts to develop effective strategies addressing their target groups.

    In the context of this study, 22 semi-structured interviews were conducted with local skiers from Tyrol and skiers from Germany. The results demonstrate the motives skiers have to visit small ski areas include, among others, family-orientation of small ski resorts, fewer skiers on the slopes or the easy overview of the slope network and the slopes. Furthermore, the results of this study show that skiers regularly visit certain small ski resorts due to emotive attachment, mainly triggered by emotional experiences with the family and in the childhood. Future research should apply quantitative methods to substantiate the findings and conclusions drawn in this thesis.
