What did childhood mean in early modern England? To answer this question, this book examines two key contemporary institutions: the school and the stage. The rise of grammar schools and universities, and of the professional stage featuring boy actors, reflect the culture's massive investment in children. In this collection, an international group of well-respected scholars examines how the representation of children by major playwrights and poets reflected the period's educational and cultural values. This book contains chapters that range from Shakespeare and Ben Jonson to the contemporary plays of Tom Stoppard, and that explore childhood in relation to classical humanism, medicine, art, and psychology, revealing how early modern performance and educational practices produced attitudes to childhood that still resonate to this day. Introduction / by Deanne Williams -- Shakespearean childhoods. Hamlet's boyhood / Seth Lerer -- The traffic in children: shipwrecked Shakespeare, precarious Pericles / Joseph Campana -- Incapable and shallow innocents: mourning Shakespeare's children in Richard III and The winter's tale / Charlotte Scott -- Beyond the boy actor. Speaking like a child: staging children's speech in early modern drama / Lucy Munro -- Shakespeare versus Blackfriars: satiric comedy, domestic tragedy, and the boy actor in Othello / Bart Van Es -- Cupid's metamorphosis: John Lyly's Love's metamorphosis and the return of the children's playing companies / Bastian Kuhl -- Girls and boys. The further adventures of Ganymede / Stephen Orgel -- Chastity, speech, and the girl masquer / Deanne Williams -- Milton and female perspiration / Douglas Trevor -- Afterlives. "To green/ yet for lust, but not for love": Andrew Marvell and the invention of children's literature / Blaine Greteman -- All Macbeth's sons / James J. Marino -- Modern retrospectives: childhood and education in Tom Stoppard's Shakespearean plays / Elizabeth Pentland

This volume examines the child on Shakespeare's stage. As a life force, an impassioned plea for justice, a legacy, history, memory or image of love or violence, children are everywhere in Shakespeare's plays. Focusing on Shakespeare's unique interest in the young body, the life stage, and the parental and social dynamic, this book offers the first sustained account of the role and representation of the child in Shakespeare's dramatic imagination. Drawing on a vast range of contemporary texts, including parenting manuals and household and pedagogic texts, as well as books on nursing and maternity, child birth, and child rearing, 'The Child in Shakespeare' explores the contexts in which the idea of the child is mobilised as a body and image on the early modern stage

This 2007 collection offered the first definitive study of a surprisingly underdeveloped area of scholarly investigation, namely the relationship between Shakespeare, children and childhood from Shakespeare's time to the present. It offers a thorough mapping of the domain in which Shakespearean childhoods need to be studied, in order to show how studying Shakespearean childhoods makes significant contributions both to Shakespearean scholarship, and to the history of childhood and its representations. The book is divided into two sections, each with a substantial introduction outlining relevant critical debates and contextualizing the rich combination of fresh research and readings of familiar Shakespearean texts that characterize the individual essays. The first part of the book examines the significance of the figure of the child in the Shakespearean canon. The second part traces the rich histories of negotiation, exchange and appropriation that have characterised Shakespeare's subsequent relations to the cultures of childhood in literary realms Shakespeare's children -- What, are they children? / Kate Chedgzoy -- Little princes : Shakespeare's royal children in context / Catherine Belsey -- Father-child identification, loss, and gender in Shakespeare's plays / Hattie Fletcher and Marianne Novy -- Character building : Shakespeare's children in context / A.J. Piesse -- Coriolanus and the little eyases : the boyhood of Shakespeare's hero / Lucy Munro -- Procreation, child-loss, and the gendering of the sonnet / Patricia Phillippy -- Children's Shakespeares -- Reinventing Shakespearean childhoods / Susanne Greenhalgh -- Play's the thing : agency in children's Shakespeares / Naomi J. Miller -- Shakespeare in the Victorian children's periodicals / Kathryn Prince -- Growing up with Shakespeare : the memoirs of the Terry family / Pascale Aebischer -- Shakespeare in the company of boys / Kate Chedgzoy -- Dream children : staging and screening childhood in a midsummer night's dream / Susanne Greenhalgh -- Shakespeare (')tween media and markets in the 1990s and beyond / Richard Burt -- Shakespeare's child characters / Mark Lawhorn
