    In Sensory Experiments, Erica Fretwell excavates the nineteenth-century science of psychophysics and its theorizations of sensation to examine the cultural and aesthetic landscape of feeling in nineteenth-century America. Fretwell demonstrates how psychophysics-a scientific movement originating in Germany and dedicated to the empirical study of sensory experience-shifted the understandings of feeling from the epistemology of sentiment to the phenomenological terrain of lived experience. Through analyses of medical case studies, spirit photographs, perfumes, music theory, recipes, and the work of canonical figures ranging from Kate Chopin and Pauline Hopkins to James Weldon Johnson and Emily Dickinson, Fretwell outlines how the five senses became important elements in the biopolitical work of constructing human difference along the lines of race, gender, and ability. In its entanglement with social difference, psychophysics contributed to the racialization of aesthetics while sketching out possibilities for alternate modes of being over and against the figure of the bourgeois liberal individual. Although psychophysics has largely been forgotten, Fretwell demonstrates that its importance to shaping social order through scientific notions of sensation is central to contemporary theories of new materialism, posthumanism, aesthetics, and affect theory.

    Die vorliegenden Studien vollziehen eine dreifache Reflexion: 1. auf die Erfahrung des Tastens, Riechens und Schmeckens, 2. auf ihre ästhetische Dimension und 3. auf ihre sprachliche Mitteilung, die durch Metaphorik und Narrativität gekennzeichnet ist. Dafür bedient sich die Arbeit phänomenologischer Analysen (Husserl, Straus, Merleau-Ponty, Tellenbach), naturwissenschaftlicher Forschungsergebnisse genauso wie psychologischer und psychoanalytischer, philosophie-, kultur- und kunstgeschichtlicher, ethnologischer und soziologischer und nicht zuletzt historisch-anthropologischer Interpretationen. Die Verfasserin setzt das Projekt der Aisthetik (Welsch, G. Böhme, Seel, Berleant) fort, d. h. sie legt der Kunsttheorie eine Sinnesanthropologie zugrunde und argumentiert die Notwendigkeit, die Thematik der Ästhetik auf Formen aller Sinne, einschließlich auf Design und Stadtplanung, auf Parfümerie und Gastronomie, zu erweitern. - Einzelne Kapitel behandeln ausführlich die haptischen Qualitäten in den bildenden Künsten, das Tattoo, den Tanz und die Kunsterfahrung der Blinden. Die Gerüche werden entweder indirekt in der Malerei suggeriert oder sie sind direkt anwesend in Kunstinstallationen und in synästhetischen Kunstformen (Gärten, Architektur, "urban smellscapes", avantgardistische Experimente etc.). Die Schriften der Parfümeure entkräften die Einwände der Philosophen gegen eine Ästhetik der Parfums. Nicht zuletzt entwickeln sich die gastronomischen Stile und die Eat-Art als zwei parallele Richtungen, die beide das ästhetische Potential des Geschmackssinns verwirklichen.

    A fresh look at synesthesia discourse in the sciences and humanities since the 19th century - while at the same time an interdisciplinary and original cultural history of the modern! Ist von Synästhesie die Rede, so verbinden sich damit gemeinhin Vorstellungen einer »ursprünglichen« Einheit der Sinne. Melanie Gruß dagegen formuliert Synästhesie als Diskurs, der sich im 19. Jahrhundert als Reaktion auf die Entwicklung technischer Medien konstituiert und diese Deutung zuerst hervorbringt. Sie zeigt: Als Konstrukt verknüpft das Synästhetische Utopien gesamtsinnlichen Empfindens mit Visionen der technischen Synthetisierung und Kopplung der Sinne. Die Studie bietet nicht nur einen innovativen Blick auf eine seit etwa 1980 verstärkt geführte Debatte um Synästhesie in Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften, sondern vor allem einen interdisziplinär angelegten Zugriff auf die Kulturgeschichte seit der Moderne. Masiello traces a history of perceptions expressed in literature, the visual arts, politics, and history from the start of the nineteenth century to the present day. A wide transnational landscape frames the book along with an original and provocative thesis: when the discourse on democracy is altered—when nations fall into crisis or the increased weight of modernity tests minds and nerves—the representation of our sensing bodies plays a crucial role in explaining order and rebellion, cultural innovation, and social change. Taking a wide arc of materials—periodicals, memoirs, political proclamations, and travel logs, along with art installations and fiction—and focusing on the technologies that supplement and enhance human perception, Masiello looks at the evolution of what she calls “sense work” in cultural texts, mainly from Latin America, that wend from the heights of romantic thought to the startling innovations of modernism in the early twentieth century and then to times of posthuman experience when cyber bodies hurtle through globalized space and human senses are reproduced by machines. Tracing the shifting debates on perceptions, The Senses of Democracy offers a new paradigm with which to speak of Latin American cultural history and launches a field for the comparative study of bodies, experience, pleasure, and pain over the continental divide. In the end, sense work helps us to understand how culture finds its location

In this "age of vision," authorities' concerns about whether and how worshipers listened to sacred speech spurred Giotto and other artists to reconfigure sacred stories to activate listening and ultimately bypass phenomenal experience for attitudes of inner receptivity. New naturalistic styles served that work, prompting viewers to give voice to depicted speech and guiding them toward spiritually fruitful auditory discipline. This study reimagines narrative pictures as site-specific extensions of a cultural system that made listening a meaningful practice. Close reading of religious texts, poetry, and art historiography augments Shoaf's novel approach to pictorial naturalism and art's multisensorial dimensions"--

    In Sensory Experiments, Erica Fretwell excavates the nineteenth-century science of psychophysics and its theorizations of sensation to examine the cultural and aesthetic landscape of feeling in nineteenth-century America. Fretwell demonstrates how psychophysics-a scientific movement originating in Germany and dedicated to the empirical study of sensory experience-shifted the understandings of feeling from the epistemology of sentiment to the phenomenological terrain of lived experience. Through analyses of medical case studies, spirit photographs, perfumes, music theory, recipes, and the work of canonical figures ranging from Kate Chopin and Pauline Hopkins to James Weldon Johnson and Emily Dickinson, Fretwell outlines how the five senses became important elements in the biopolitical work of constructing human difference along the lines of race, gender, and ability. In its entanglement with social difference, psychophysics contributed to the racialization of aesthetics while sketching out possibilities for alternate modes of being over and against the figure of the bourgeois liberal individual. Although psychophysics has largely been forgotten, Fretwell demonstrates that its importance to shaping social order through scientific notions of sensation is central to contemporary theories of new materialism, posthumanism, aesthetics, and affect theory.
