    ger: Das Thema dieser Masterarbeit ist die Analyse der kulturell subversiven Elemente in den Songtexten von drei populären Liedern der Rolling Stones. Des Weiteren werden die öffentlichen Reaktionen auf diese Elemente analysiert. Nach einer kurzen Erläuterung der Geschichte der Rolling Stones und dem für die Arbeit relevanten Zeitrahmen - den 1960ern - wird der Begriff "kulturelle Subversion" näher definiert. Darauf folgen chronologisch geordnete Beispiele für negative öffentliche Reaktionen auf populäre Musik aus der Zeit vor und nach 1969 sowie die Reaktion auf den Tod von Meredith Hunter im Zuge des Altamount Free Concert. Dies dient dazu, einen Überblick über die Charakteristika der Reaktionen Konservativer auf subversive Musik zu schaffen. Anschließend folgt die Analyse der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den genannten Beispielen und den Reaktionen auf Songtexte der Rolling Stones. Während es nie einen nationalen Skandal als Reaktion auf die Rolling Stones gab, wurden einige ihrer Lieder, vor allem bei Fernsehauftritten, zensiert. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit werden die Texte von "Let It Bleed", "Sympathy for the Devil" und "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" analysiert. Die Analyse bezieht sich dabei vor allem auf die literarische Dimension der Texte, nimmt aber auch auf deren historischen Kontext Rücksicht. Auf die Versstruktur der Songtexte wird, besonders dort, wo sie die subversiven Elemente der Texte unterstützt, ebenfalls Bezug genommen. Das Ergebnis der Arbeit ist, dass den oft simpel erscheinenden Themen der Lieder, wie zum Beispiel Sex, Drogen, Gewalt und Langeweile, tiefere, subversive Kritik am konservativen Status Quo zugrunde liegt. Das inkludiert beispielsweise Kritik an der fortschreitenden Kommerzialisierung im Alltag und der damit verbundenen Werbung, sowie Kritik an sozialen Tabus, z.B. bezüglich Menstruation. eng: The topic of this master's thesis is the analysis of culturally subversive elements in the lyrics of three popular songs by The Rolling Stones, but due attention is also paid to the examination of public responses to these elements. After a short review of The Rolling Stones' history and the timeframe relevant to the thesis (the 1960s), the meaning of the term "cultural subversion" is defined. This is followed by several examples of negative public reactions to popular music, in chronological order from the time before and after 1969. In addition, the reaction to the death of Meredith Hunter at the Altamont Free Concert is also examined. This serves to provide an overview of what characterizes conservative reactions to culturally subversive music. Afterwards, the similarities and differences of the “example-reactions” are analysed and compared to reactions concerning The Rolling Stones' lyrics. While The Rolling Stones were never at the center of a national scandal, some of their songs were censored when they were performed on television. In the main part of the thesis (chapters 3 – 5) the lyrics of "Let It Bleed", "Sympathy for the Devil" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" are analyzed. The literary dimension of the lyrics is the main focus of the analysis, while its historical contexts are taken into consideration where applicable. The rhyme schemes are also examined, especially in those cases where they support the subversive elements of the lyrics. The findings of this thesis are as follows: Despite the - at a casual glance - simple themes of the songs, as, for example, sex, drugs, violence and boredom, they often contain a more complex subversive critique of the conservative status quo. In some cases, this includes a critique of the continuing commercialization of everyday life and advertisements associated with it, as well as of societal taboos such as menstruation.

    This paper utilizes two measures of subjective well-being to test a hypothesis that a marginal increase in subjective well-being associated with a marginal increase in income is larger for poorer than for richer populations. This hypothesis is examined in the setting of Slovak Roma, who are poor in comparison to the non-Roma population. The results suggest that the correlation between income and satisfaction is greater for the lower-income group (the Roma) than for the higher-income group (majority population). Further, the correlation between income and emotional well-being does not differ between the two groups.

    Im ersten Halbjahr 2021 hat das Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL) bei der INFO GmbH Markt- und Meinungsforschung eine repräsentative Bevölkerungsumfrage in Deutschland in Auftrag gegeben, um Analysen subjektiver Einschätzungen und Erfahrungen der Bevölkerung in ländlichen und nicht-ländlichen Räumen zu ermöglichen und politische Maßnahmen zur Angleichung der Lebensbedingungen im ländlichen Raum priorisieren zu können. Dieses Thünen Working Paper enthält einen technischen Bericht über die Umfrage, der das Erhebungsdesign und seine Durchführung, die Datenüberprüfung und die Aufbereitung für die Analyse abdeckt. Es bietet eine Darstellung der wichtigsten Aspekte der Datenqualität – wie das Teilnahme- und Antwortverhalten der Befragungspersonen und die damit zusammenhängende Repräsentativität – und präsentiert Häufigkeitstabellen für alle Variablen in den erhobenen Daten. In the first half of 2021, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) commissioned a representative population survey in Germany to facilitate analyses of subjective assessments and experiences of the population in rural and non-rural areas, to help prioritize political measures to level-up living conditions in rural areas. This paper provides a technical report of the survey covering the survey design and its implementation, the data checking and preparation for analysis. It provides an account of key aspects of data quality, such as non-response (at the person and survey question level) and representativeness, and presents frequency tables for all variables in the survey data.

    A central finding in happiness research is that a person's income relative to the average income in her social reference group is more important for her life satisfaction than the absolute level of her income. This dependence of life satisfaction on relative income can be related to the reference dependence of the value function in Kahneman and Tversky's (1979) prospect theory. In this paper we investigate whether the characteristics of the value function like concavity for gains, convexity for losses, and loss aversion apply to the dependence of life satisfaction on relative income. This is tested with a new measure for the reference income for a large German panel for the years 1984-2001. We find concavity of life satisfaction in positive relative income, but unexpectedly strongly significant concavity of life satisfaction in negative relative income as well. The latter result is shown to be robust to extreme distortions of the reported-life-satisfaction scale. It implies a rising marginal sensitivity of life satisfaction to more negative values of relative income, and hence loss aversion (in a wide sense).     The socio-economic gradient in health remains a controversial topic in economics and other social sciences. In this paper we develop a new duration model that allows for unobserved persistent individual-specific health shocks and provides new evidence on the roles of socio-economic characteristics in determining length of life using 19-years of high-quality panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. We also contribute to the rapidly growing literature on life satisfaction by testing if more satisfied people live longer. Our results clearly confirm the importance of income, education and marriage as important factors in determining longevity. For example, a one-log point increase in real household monthly income leads to a 12% decline in the probability of death. We find a large role for unobserved health shocks, with 5-years of shocks explaining the same amount of the variation in length of life as all the other observed individual and socio-economic characteristics (with the exception of age) combined. Individuals with a high level of life satisfaction when initially interviewed live significantly longer, but this effect is completely due to the fact that less satisfied individuals are typically less healthy. We are also able to confirm the findings of previous studies that self-assessed health status has significant explanatory power in predicting future mortality and is therefore a useful measure of morbidity. Finally, we suggest that the duration model developed in this paper is a useful tool when analyzing a wide-range of single-spell durations where individual-specific shocks are likely to be important.

    This paper explores the relationship between two well-established concepts of measuring individual well-being: the concept of happiness, i.e. self-reported level of satisfaction with income and life, and relative deprivation/satisfaction, i.e. the gaps between the individual's income and the incomes of all individuals richer/poorer than him. Operationalizing both concepts using micro panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we provide empirical evidence for subjective well-being depending more on relative satisfaction than on absolute levels of income. This finding holds even after controlling for other influential factors in a multivariate setting.
