"This collection of original essays provides an innovative and multifaceted reflection on the impact and inspiration of the scholarship of eminent anthropologist Marilyn Strathern. A distinguished team of international contributors, all former students of Strathern, reflect on the impact of their relationship with their teacher and address the wider conceptual contribution of her work through their own writings. The essays provide an accessible entry into Strathern's scholarship for those new to her work and a rich source of material which mobilises and deploys her concepts, including new ethnographic examples and discussion of contemporary political issues, for those more familiar with her scholarship. The result is a collection that dissects, contextualises and reroutes concepts of relationality, inspiration and knowledge in novel and unpredictable ways. Recasting Anthropological Knowledge will prove invaluable to all students of anthropology and will be of interest to scholars across the social sciences"-- "The authors of the chapters presented in this collection take various strategies and we take our lead from them. Their brief was to pick up, run with, and depart from key Strathernian concepts by way of their own current research. The result is something more stable than such metaphors of flight suggest. Instead of running, the authors of these chapters have decided to dwell. Debbora Battaglia (beginning this volume), for example, remarking on the generosity with which Strathern cites her students and colleagues and on how she reworks and re-worlds their ethnographic accounts, shows what it might mean to accompany rather than depart from Strathern: in her words, to go a-worlding with her. Adam Reed (ending this volume) is more cautious: for him, it is a moot point whether Strathern's generosity in citing her students is evidence of her having been inspired by them: but, dwelling on the concept of inspiration itself, Reed reveals its unbidden, all- encompassing, dynamic and deeply social and sociable nature. Multiple flows of inspiration run through the various chapters in this volume and not only between Strathern and her students"-- Introduction : on recombinant knowledge and debts that inspire / Jeanette Edwards and Maja Petrović-Šteger -- Writing the parallax gap : an itinerary / Debbora Battaglia -- Too big to fail / Annelise Riles -- 'Hybrid custom' and legal description in Papua New Guinea / Melissa Demian -- Entomological extensions : model huts and fieldworks / Ann Kelly -- Kinship and the core house : contested ideas of family and place in a Ghanaian resettlement township / Thomas Yarrow -- Invisible families : imagining relations in families based on same-sex partnerships / Aivita Putnina -- Knowledge in a critical mode : feminist expertise in design and planning / Eeva Berglund -- Spools, loops and traces : on etoy encapsulation and three portraits of Marilyn Strathern / Maja Petrović-Šteger -- Inspiring Strathern / Adam Reed.

"Exploring the subjectivity of the Qurʼān's meaning in the world, this book analyses Qurʼānic referencing in Muslim political rhetoric. Informed by classical Arabic-Islamic rhetorical theory, the author examines Arabic documents attributed to the ʻAbbāsid Caliph al-Maʼmūn (r. 813-833), whose rule coincided with the maturation of classical Islamic political thought and literary culture. She demonstrates how Qurʼānic referencing functions as tropological exegesis, whereby verses in the Qurʼān are reinterpreted through the lens of subjective experience. At the same time socio-historical experiences are understood in terms of the Qurʼān's moral typology, which consists of interrelated polarities that define good and bad moral characters in mutual orientation. Through strategic deployment of scriptural references within the logical scheme of rhetorical argument, the Caliph constructs moral analogies between paradigmatic characters in the Qurʼān and people in his social milieu, and situates himself as moral reformer and guide, in order to persuade his audiences of the necessity of the Caliphate and the religio-moral imperative of obedience to his authority. The Maʼmūnid case study is indicative of the nature and function of Qurʼānic referencing across historical periods, and thus contributes to broader conversations about the impact of the Qurʼān on the .shaping of Islamic civilization. This book is an invaluable resource for those with an interest in Early Islamic History, Islam and the rhetoric of contemporary Middle East regional and global Islamic politics."-- "Informed by classical Arabic-Islamic rhetorical theory, the author examines Arabic documents attributed to the ʻAbbāsid Caliph al-Maʼmūn." pt. 1. Hermeneutical theory -- pt. 2. Practical case study.

"Aw?ad al-D?n Kirm?n? (d. 1238) was one of the greatest and most colourful Persian Sufis of the medieval period; he was celebrated in his own lifetime by a large number of like-minded followers and other Sufi masters. And yet his form of Sufism was the subject of much discussion within the Islamic world, as it elicited responses ranging from praise and commendation to reproach and contempt within a generation of his death. This book assesses the few comments written about Kirm?n? by his contemporaries, and also provides a translation from his Persian hagiography which was written in the generation after his death. This anonymous hagiography presents a series of anecdotes that portray Kirm?n?'s "virtues". The book provides an investigation into Kirm?n? the individual, but the story has significance that extends much further. The controversy of his form of Sufism occurred at a crucial time in the evolution of Sufi piety and theology. The research herein situates Kirm?n? within this critical period, and assesses the various perspectives taken by his contemporaries and near contemporaries. Such views reveal much about the dynamics and developments of Sufism during the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Sufi orders (?ur?q, s.?ar?qa) began to emerge, and which gave individual Sufis a much more structured and ordered method of engaging in piety, and of presenting the Sufi tradition to society at large. As the first attempt in a Western language to appreciate the significant contribution that Kirm?n? made to the medieval Persian Sufi tradition, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Sufi Studies, as well as those interested in Middle Eastern History."--Provided by publisher Introduction -- Part I: 1. Persianate Sufism in the 12th-13th centuries -- 2. The rise of Awḥad al-Dīn Kirmānī -- 3. The fall of Awḥad al-Dīn Kirmānī -- 4. Friends or foes? Ibn Jawzi's criticisms of shahid bazi assessed through Kirmānī's Hagiography -- Conclusion -- Part II: Translation of Kirmānī's Hagiography -- Notes to the Hagiography.

"Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919) was a gifted writer, poet, naturalist, and artist with a keen perspective on Appalachian life and culture. She and her husband Frank lived on Walden's Ridge in southeast Tennessee, where they struggled to raise a family in the difficult mountain environment. Between 1908 and 1918, Miles kept a series of journals in which she recorded in beautiful and haunting prose the natural wonders and local customs of Walden's Ridge. Jobs were scarce, however, and as the family's financial situation deteriorated, Miles began to sell literary works and paintings to make ends meet. Her short stories appeared in national magazines such as Harper's Monthly and Lippincott's, and in 1905 she published Spirit of the Mountains, a nonfiction book about southern Appalachia. After the death of her three-year-old son from scarlet fever in 1913, the journals took a more somber turn as Miles documented the difficulties of mountain life, the plight of women in rural communities, the effect of disparities of class and wealth, and her own struggle with tuberculosis. Previously examined only by a handful of scholars, the journals contain both poignant and incisive accounts of nature and a woman's perspective on love and marriage, death customs, child-raising, medical care, and subsistence on the land in southern Appalachia in the early twentieth century. With a foreword by Elizabeth Engelhard, this edited selection of Emma Bell Miles's journals is illustrated with examples of her painting"--

Symptoms of an Unruly Age compares the writings of Li Zhi (1527-1602) and his late-Ming compatriots to texts composed by their European contemporaries, including Montaigne, Shakespeare, and Cervantes. Emphasizing aesthetic patterns that transcend national boundaries, Rivi Handler-Spitz explores these works as culturally distinct responses to similar social and economic tensions affecting early modern cultures on both ends of Eurasia. The paradoxes, ironies, and self-contradictions that pervade these works are symptomatic of the hypocrisy, social posturing, and counterfeiting that afflicted both Chinese and European societies at the turn of the seventeenth century

As public and private sector organizations work more frequently in partnership, managing uncertainties, problems and controversies becomes increasingly difficult. Despite sophisticated technology and knowledge, the strategic networks and games required to solve uncertainties become more complex and more important than ever before. Managing Uncertainties in Networks is a new text that examines developments in the area of network strategy. Differentiating itself from other policy network approaches which have a mainly research focus, this text has a managerial orientation presenting strategies and management recommendations for public and private sector organisations as well as the analytical tools required by practitioners seeking to support their own internal decision making and strategy formulation. Topics covered include: * knowledge conflicts * uncertainties and governments * technological controversies * collaborative problem solving * managing networks Tapping into the important and ever-growing area of risk and uncertainty management, this is a vital and long awaited staple for the arena written by two leading authors in the field. Key reading for students, scholars and policy makers seeking to understand the complexities of the network society

"Every River on Earth: Writing from Appalachian Ohio includes some of the best regional poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction from forty contemporary writers, both established and up-and-coming. The wide range of material from authors such as David Baker, Don Bogen, Michelle Burke, Richard Hague, Donald Ray Pollock, and others, offers the reader a window into daily life in the region. The people, the landscape, the struggles, and the deepest undercurrents of what it means to be from and of a place are revealed in these original, deeply moving, and sometimes shocking pieces. The book is divided into four sections: Family & Folks, The Land, The Grind, and Home & Away, each of which explores a different aspect of the place that these authors call home. The sections work together beautifully to capture what it means to live, to love, and to die in this particular slice of Appalachia. The writing is accessible and often emotionally raw; Every River on Earth invites all types of readers and conveys a profound appreciation of the region's character. The authors also offer personal statements about their writing, allowing the reader an intimate insight into their processes, aesthetics, and inspirations. What is it to be an Appalachian? What is it to be an Appalachian in Ohio? This book vividly paints that picture. Every River on Earth David Lee Garrison I look out the window and see through the neighbor's window to an Amish buggy where three children are peeping back, and in their eyes I see the darkness of plowed earth hiding seed. Wind pokes the land in winter, trying to waken it, and in the melting snow I see rainbows and in them every river on earth. I see all the way to the ocean, where sand and stones embrace each falling wave and reach back to gather it in"--

Ellingson's narrative follows the career of anthropologist John Crawfurd, whose political ambition and racist agenda were well served by his construction of what was manifestly a myth of savage nobility. Generations of anthropologists have accepted the existence of the myth as fact, and Ellingson makes clear the extent to which the misdirection implicit in this circumstance can enter into struggles over human rights and racial equality

"This book is essential reading on the spatial concepts that two erstwhile neighboring cultures, Lithuanian and German, once associated with one physical space--a Lithuanian region in Prussia. Covering a period of five centuries, the author explores how, when, and, most importantly, why these concepts have been developed and transformed, regulating the spatial imagination of several generations. The study focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, presenting the narratives, representations, and geographic conceptions of the region that existed in these two national cultures. The volume shows how knowledge about "their own" space ended up serving as a tool for both Lithuanian and German political aspirations and how it challenged the spatial concepts about this area in the previous century"-- Pages:1 to 25; Pages:26 to 50; Pages:51 to 75; Pages:76 to 100; Pages:101 to 125; Pages:126 to 150; Pages:151 to 175; Pages:176 to 200; Pages:201 to 225; Pages:226 to 250; Pages:251 to 275; Pages:276 to 300; Pages:301 to 325; Pages:326 to 350; Pages:351 to 375; Pages:376 to 400; Pages:401 to 425; Pages:426 to 450; Pages:451 to 462
