    "The undead are very much alive in contemporary entertainment and lore. Indeed, vampires and zombies have garnered attention in print media, cinema, and on television. The vampire, with roots in medieval European folklore, and the zombie, with origins in Afro-Caribbean mythology, have both undergone significant transformations in global culture, proliferating as deviant representatives of the zeitgeist. As this volume demonstrates, distribution of vampires and zombies across time and space has revealed these undead figures to carry multiple meanings. Of all monsters, vampires and zombies seem to be the trendiest--the most regularly incarnate of the undead and the monsters most frequently represented in the media and pop culture. Moreover, both figures have experienced radical reinterpretations. If in the past vampires were evil, blood-sucking exploiters and zombies were brainless victims, they now have metamorphosed into kinder and gentler blood-sucking vampires and crueler, more relentless, flesh-eating zombies. Although the portrayals of both vampires and zombies can be traced back to specific regions and predate mass media, the introduction of mass distribution through film and game technologies has significantly modified their depiction over time and in new environments. Among other topics, contributors discuss zombies in Thai films, vampire novels of Mexico, and undead avatars in horror videogames. En 1781 se publicaron en Valencia los cinco primeros libros con el título de Fábulas en verso castellano y en 1784 aparecieron en Madrid en su versión definitiva: nueve libros con 157 fábulas. Están inspiradas en las obras de los fabulistas clásicos Esopo y Fedro, del francés Jean de La Fontaine y del inglés J. Gay. Tienen propósito didáctico. Su estilo es sencillo. Samaniego se enemistó con Tomás de Iriarte -que había sido su amigo- cuando éste publicó sus propias fábulas, un año después que las suyas, y dijo que eran "las primeras fábulas originales en lengua castellana".     Annotation Fairy tales are alive with the supernatural - elves, dwarfs, fairies, giants, and trolls, as well as witches with magic wands and sorcerers who cast spells and enchantments. Children into Swans examines these motifs in a range of ancient stories. Moving from the rich period of nineteenth-century fairy tales back as far as the earliest folk literature of northern Europe, Jan Beveridge shows how long these supernatural features have been a part of storytelling, with ancient tales, many from Celtic and Norse mythology, that offer glimpses into a remote era and a pre-Christian sensibility. The earliest stories often show significant differences from what we might expect.     "The stories in the Grimm brothers' Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales), first published in 1812 and 1815, have come to define academic and popular understandings of the fairy tale genre. Yet over a period of forty years, the brothers, especially Wilhelm, revised, edited, sanitized, and bowdlerized the tales, publishing the seventh and final edition in 1857 with many of the sexual implications removed. However, the contributors in Transgressive Tales: Queering the Grimms demonstrate that the Grimms and other collectors paid less attention to ridding the tales of non-heterosexual implications and that, in fact, the Grimms' tales are rich with queer possibilities. Editors Kay Turner and Pauline Greenhill introduce the volume with an overview of the tales' literary and interpretive history, surveying their queerness in terms of not just sex, gender and sexuality, but also issues of marginalization, oddity, and not fitting into society. In three thematic sections, contributors then consider a range of tales and their queer themes. In Faux Femininities, essays explore female characters, and their relationships and feminine representation in the tales.     Das elektronische Zeitalter hat mehr oder weniger alle Bereiche der Wissenschaft revolutioniert und vor neue Aufgaben gestellt. Erfolgreich hat auch die kulturwissenschaftliche Erzählforschung den Übergang vom traditionellen Studium handschriftlicher oder gedruckter Texte hin zu einer Forschung vollzogen, die den Kontext der Erzählung genauso einbezieht wie weitere Medien, etwa das Internet. Als das Aushängeschild solcher moderner Erzählforschung gilt seit vielen Jahrzehnten die „Enzyklopädie des Märchens“, deren umsichtig konzipierte Artikel Internationalität und Interdisziplinarität garantieren.Eine namhafte Gruppe von Autorinnen und Autoren dieser Enzyklopädie präsentiert nun in deutsch- und englischsprachigen Aufsätzen einen Querschnitt aktueller Theorien, Methoden und Forschungsfelder der kulturwissenschaftlichen Narratologie. Dionysian happiness: cups and other small vases from the second half of the 6th century BCE -- ch. 6. Dionysos in archaic Greek art: a summary -- ch. 7. Modern mythologies: "Dionysos" versus "Apollo." For the Greek, Dionysos was a very important god: for individuals as well as for the community as a whole. As there are only a few written sources dating from before the 5th Century BC, the many images of Dionysos on Greek vases may well offer a genuine approach to the meaning given by the ancient viewer. This book explores the earliest images followed by those on small vases for private use, on mixing bowls of the symposion, on amphoras, on later drinking cups and on archaic sculptures. It gives an overview of Dionysian iconography of the 5th Century BC as well as an overall interpretation

Popular media's commodified representations of ghosts can be quite different from what people believe about them, based on tradition or direct experience. Belief and tradition and the popular or commercial nevertheless continually feed off each other. They frequently share space in how people think about the supernatural. In Haunting Experiences, three well-known folklorists broaden the discussion of ghost lore by examining it from multiple angles in various modern contexts. Diane E. Goldstein, Sylvia Ann Grider, and Jeannie Banks Thomas take ghosts seriously. They draw on contemporary scholarship that emphasizes the basis of belief in experience and the usefulness of ghost stories. And they look closely at the narrative role of such lore in matters such as socialization and gender.
