    This volume deals with different attempts undertaken during the Italian Renaissance to define the nature of the 'lyrical' and of individual lyrical forms (including sonnets, epigrams, canzone, ballads, madrigals, and elegies). It begins with an introductory outline of the fundamental dilemma of the era, when an attempt was made to transform the diverse traditions of lyrical writing and the various theoretical options in the literary theory of the cinquecento into a coherent system of poetics. Subsequently, the first main chapter details the different systematic approaches, influenced predominantly by a reading of Aristotelian poetics, attempted by G.G. Trissino, I.C. Scaliger, A.S. Minturno, P. Torellis, and T. Tasso. The second main chapter provides an extensive analysis of contemporary theories about the specific lyrical forms listed above. Overall, this study reveals that lyrical theory in the cinquecento remained a precarious territory: a unitary theory of poetics does not emerge, but instead, we must accept a plurality of possible proposals for a lyrical theory.     Although it has been recognized that Edmund Spenser’s poetry owes a debt to the work of the French poets of the Pléiade, particularly to Joachim du Bellay and Pierre de Ronsard, there has been no critical analysis of this relationship. Mr. Satterthwaite compares the work of the three poets, showing the relation between the English movement to write quantitative verse and the French experiments in vers mesures.     The need for a new critical edition of Philip Melanchthon's philosophical works is particularly clear in the case of his writings on rhetoric. That Melanchthon played a central role in the transformation of the ancient discipline has been well established by historians. His writings on rhetoric have proven significant sources for several academic fields, including church history, Scriptural interpretation, the history of science, and the reception of classical literature. Remarkably, two of the three principal writings have not been published in their entirety since the sixteenth century. This volume collects critical editions of the three principal writings to provide a more complete record of Melanchthon’s teaching of rhetoric. It includes critical editions of De Rhetorica (1519), Institutiones Rhetoricae (1521), and Elementa Rhetorices (1531). In addition to the three principal writings, this volume collects a new edition, based on a 1911 edition by Hanns Zwicker, of Dispositiones Rhetoricae (c. 1553), a manuscript compilation of 161 model themes. Scholars will find in this volume the major sources for Melanchthon’s theory and practice of rhetorical instruction.

    Model court conduct in the Renaissance shared many rhetorical features with poetry. Analyzing these stylistic affinities, Professor Javitch shows that the rise of the courtly ideal enhanced the status of poetic art. He suggests a new explanation for the fostering of poetic talents by courtly establishments and proposes that the court stimulated these talents more decisively than the Renaissance school. The author focuses on late Tudor England and considers how Queen Elizabeth's court helped poetry gain strength by subscribing to a code of behavior as artificial as that prescribed by Castiglione. Elizabethan writers, however, could benefit from the court's example only so long as their contemporaries continued to respect its social and moral authority.     The need for a new critical edition of Philip Melanchthon's philosophical works is particularly clear in the case of his writings on rhetoric. That Melanchthon played a central role in the transformation of the ancient discipline has been well established by historians. His writings on rhetoric have proven significant sources for several academic fields, including church history, Scriptural interpretation, the history of science, and the reception of classical literature. Remarkably, two of the three principal writings have not been published in their entirety since the sixteenth century. This volume collects critical editions of the three principal writings to provide a more complete record of Melanchthon’s teaching of rhetoric. It includes critical editions of De Rhetorica (1519), Institutiones Rhetoricae (1521), and Elementa Rhetorices (1531). In addition to the three principal writings, this volume collects a new edition, based on a 1911 edition by Hanns Zwicker, of Dispositiones Rhetoricae (c. 1553), a manuscript compilation of 161 model themes. Scholars will find in this volume the major sources for Melanchthon’s theory and practice of rhetorical instruction.

    This volume deals with different attempts undertaken during the Italian Renaissance to define the nature of the 'lyrical' and of individual lyrical forms (including sonnets, epigrams, canzone, ballads, madrigals, and elegies). It begins with an introductory outline of the fundamental dilemma of the era, when an attempt was made to transform the diverse traditions of lyrical writing and the various theoretical options in the literary theory of the cinquecento into a coherent system of poetics. Subsequently, the first main chapter details the different systematic approaches, influenced predominantly by a reading of Aristotelian poetics, attempted by G.G. Trissino, I.C. Scaliger, A.S. Minturno, P. Torellis, and T. Tasso. The second main chapter provides an extensive analysis of contemporary theories about the specific lyrical forms listed above. Overall, this study reveals that lyrical theory in the cinquecento remained a precarious territory: a unitary theory of poetics does not emerge, but instead, we must accept a plurality of possible proposals for a lyrical theory.     The Roman poet Ovid, author of the famous Metamorphoses, is widely considered one of the canonical poets of Latin antiquity. Vastly popular in Europe during the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, Ovid's writings influenced the literature, art, and culture in Spain's Golden Age.The book begins with examinations of the translation and utilization of Ovid's texts from the Middle Ages to the Age of Cervantes. The work includes a section devoted to the influence of Ovid on Cervantes, arguing that Don Quixote is a deeply Ovidian text, drawing upon many classical myths and themes. The contributors then turn to specific myths in Ovid as they were absorbed and transformed by different writers, including that of Echo and Narcissus in Garcilaso de la Vega and Hermaphroditus in Covarrubias and Moya. The final section of the book centers on questions of poetic fame and self-fashioning. Ovid in the Age of Cervantes is an important and comprehensive re-evaluation of Ovid's impact on Renaissance and Early Modern Spain.

    With the advent of the reformation, concepts of living and dying were profoundly reconfigured. As purgatory disappeared from the spiritual landscape, other paths to the afterlife were rediscovered. Thus, when life draws to a close, the passage to the afterlife becomes a last pilgrimage, a popular early modern metaphor that has received little critical commentary. In a rigorous historical and theological reading, Cyril L. Caspar explores five major English poets - John Donne, Sir Walter Raleigh, George Herbert, Edmund Spenser, and John Milton - to unveil the poetical potential of the last pilgrimage as a life-transcending metaphor.
