    O artigo analisa a evolução do salário mínimo (SM) no Brasil depois da estabilização do Plano Real. Mostra-se que entre 1994 e 2007, a variável teve um aumento real acumulado de mais de 100%. Com isso, seu valor avançou na escala de rendimentos, estimando-se que em 2007 tenha alcançado 41% do rendimento médio. Mesmo em 2005, antes dos aumentos reais importantes observados em 2006 e 2007, o SM representava um valor correspondente a mais de duas vezes o rendimento médio dos 20% mais pobres e quase 20% superior ao rendimento médio dos 50% mais pobres em nível nacional e, no Nordeste, seu valor era inclusive maior do que o rendimento da média dos 90% mais pobres. O artigo aponta para o esgotamento da eficácia da política de aumentos reais do SM como instrumento de políticas de redução da pobre
