    We argue in favor of a departure from the standard equilibrium approach in game theory in favor of the less ambitious goal of describing only the actual behavior of rational players. We investigate the notion of rationality in behavioral models of extensive-form games (allowing for imperfect information), where a state is described in terms of a play of the game instead of a strategy profile. The players' beliefs are specified only at reached decision histories and are modeled as pre-choice beliefs, allowing us to carry out the analysis without the need for (objective or subjective) counterfactuals. The analysis is close in spirit to the literature on self-confirming equilibrium, but it does not rely on the notion of strategy. We also provide a characterization of rational play that is compatible with pure-strategy Nash equilibrium.

    We develop a rational model of trading behavior in which the agents gradually learn about their ability to trade, and exit after poor trading performance. We demonstrate that it is optimal for experienced traders to "procrastinate" and postpone exit even after bad results. We embed this "optimal procrastination" in a model of population dynamics with entry and endogenous exit, and generate predictions about the dynamics of various cross-sectional characteristics. We test these population-level predictions using a large client data set of a major Swiss retail broker. Consistent with the model, we find that endogenous exit decisions produce non-trivial and non-monotonic population-wide linkages between performance, exits, and trading experience

    This paper studies whether and why algorithmic traders exhibit one of the most broadlydocumented behavioral puzzles - the disposition effect. We use trade data from the NASDAQ Copenhagen Stock Exchange merged with the weather data. We find that on average, the disposition effect for human traders is substantial and increases significantly on colder days, while for similarly-trading algorithms, it is insignificant and insensitive to the weather. This provides causal evidence of the link between human psychology and the disposition effect and suggests that algorithms can reduce psychology-related human errors. Considering the ongoing AI adoption, this may have broad implications.

    Friedrich Max Müllers Vortrag „Theosophy, or Psychological Religion“ markierte eine lange Auseinandersetzung zwischen Müller und Mitgliedern der Theosophischen Gesellschaft über grundlegende Fragen der Weltdeutung. Während Müller die Gesetze der Logik als „heilig“ und damit unumstößlich ansah, spiegelte die Vernunft im okkulten Milieu oft nur einen vorläufigen Zustand der geistigen Entwicklung der Menschheit wider. Die dadurch entstandene erkenntnistheoretische Lücke wurde häufig durch literarische Umschreibungen gefüllt. Der Band zeigt an zahlreichen Beispielen, wie diese Umschreibungen die Ästhetik esoterischer Strömungen prägten und verdeutlicht damit das Potential einer erkenntnistheoretischen Grundlagenanalyse für den Esoterikbegriff. Max Müller's lecture 'Theosophy, or Psychological Religion' marked a long dispute between Müller and members of the Theosophical Society over fundamental questions of world interpretation. While Müller regarded the laws of logic as 'sacred' and therefore irrefutable, reason in the occult milieu often reflected only a provisional state of humanity's spiritual development. The resulting epistemological gap was often filled by literary paraphrases. This volume uses numerous examples to show how these paraphrases shaped the aesthetics of esoteric currents, thus illustrating the potential of an epistemological analysis of the concept of esotericism.

    Under an ‘antitheodicy’, I understand any attempt to show the principal impossibility of a morally respectable and rationally convincing theoretical answer to the theoretical problem of evil which is understood as a problem of consistency and rational coherence between propositions. In this paper, I will analyse the concept of rationality which is presupposed at least in some strands of antitheodicy. A. Gleeson’s ‘A frightening love. Recasting the Problem of Evil’ presupposes a dichotomy between an engaged-existential and a detached-impersonal kind of philosophical thinking which are respectively characterized by a stress on authenticity and the acknowledgement of particularity and contingency in the first case and by precision, logic, provability and an instrumental understanding of rationality in the second case. The second kind of reasoning which underlies all theodicies is inapt for dealing adequately with the real problem of evil. I try to show that the dichotomy of impersonal objective and existentially subjective kinds of philosophy is not a contradictory one but leaves out a broad field in-between which can be characterized as ‘informal reasoning’ and which allows a morally sensitive answer to the theoretical problem of evil which is not isolated from the ‘real’ problem of evil.

    We challenge the standard definition of economic rationality as consistency by making use of a novel distinction between axioms of decision theory: consistency and preference axioms. We argue that this distinction has been overlooked by the literature and, as a result, evidence that consistency is a proxy of decision-making ability is often based on incorrect identification strategies. We conduct an experiment to investigate the factors that drive violations of consistency alone. While we find no evidence that consistency axioms are a proxy of decisionmaking ability, we provide suggestive evidence that some preference axioms are, confirming their potential role as confounding factors. Overall, our experimental evidence raises doubts about the choice of language that equates consistency with rationality in economics.
