    In den letzten Jahren ist der strukturelle Ausschluss von »People of Colour« und »Schwarzen Menschen« durch weiße Kultur- und Bildungsinstitutionen immer mehr in den Fokus künstlerischer sowie auch institutioneller Kritik geraten. Neue Förderinstrumente und Arbeitspraktiken führten oftmals nicht zu nachhaltigen Veränderungen. Zugleich werden immer wieder neue Strategien der Allianzenbildung und solidarischen Praxis initiiert.In den Beiträgen dieses Bandes kommen Künstler_innen, Kurator_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen zu Wort, die ihre Arbeitspraxis in Zusammenarbeit mit Institutionen und Mitstreiter_innen kritisch reflektieren. Das Ergebnis ist eine Bestandsaufnahme verschiedener aktueller Kämpfe zwischen selbstkritischem Lagebericht, Manifest und praxisnahem Handbuch. In this volume curators, artists and scientists reflect on current forms of critical and solidary practice in and around 'white' cultural and educational institutions.

"Following the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) 2018 internal investigation into sexual harassment and misconduct in its senior leadership ranks, FEMA leaders chose to openly discuss the problems and the need to develop and maintain a workplace in which all employees are treated with professionalism and respect. Although FEMA's investigation provided insights into the culture and misconduct in one FEMA office, it was not designed to provide a comprehensive account of harassment and discrimination across the organization. Thus, FEMA asked the Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center (HSOAC) to provide an independent and objective assessment of the prevalence and characteristics of harassment and discrimination at FEMA. In April and May 2019, HSOAC fielded a survey designed to estimate the annual prevalence of workplace harassment and discrimination at FEMA and assess employee perceptions of leadership and workplace climate. In addition to sexual harassment, the survey assessed gender discrimination and racial/ethnic harassment and discrimination to provide a more complete description of the types of civil rights violations (harassment or discrimination on the basis of membership in any protected class) experienced by FEMA employees. This report contains detailed documentation of the results of that HSOAC-fielded survey."

Critical race studies has not come up with good answers to this question because it has overemphasized the visuality of race. According to dominant theories of racial formation, we see race on bodies and persons and then link those perceptions to unjust practices of racial inequality. Racial Worldmaking argues that we do not just see race. We are taught when, where, and how to notice race by a set of narrative and interpretive strategies. These strategies are named “racial worldmaking” because they get us to notice race not just at the level of the biological representation of bodies or the social categorization of persons. Rather, they get us to embed race into our expectations for how the world operates. As Mark C. Jerng shows us, these strategies find their most powerful expression in popular genre fiction: science fiction, romance, and fantasy. Taking up the work of H.G. Wells, Margaret Mitchell, Samuel Delany, Philip K. Dick and others, Racial Worldmaking rethinks racial formation in relation to both African American and Asian American studies, as well as how scholars have addressed the relationships between literary representation and racial ideology.     The canon of postwar American fiction has changed over the past few decades to include far more writers of color. It would appear that we are making progress—recovering marginalized voices and including those who were for far too long ignored. However, is this celebratory narrative borne out in the data? Richard Jean So draws on big data, literary history, and close readings to offer an unprecedented analysis of racial inequality in American publishing that reveals the persistence of an extreme bias toward white authors. In fact, a defining feature of the publishing industry is its vast whiteness, which has denied nonwhite authors, especially black writers, the coveted resources of publishing, reviews, prizes, and sales, with profound effects on the language, form, and content of the postwar novel. Rather than seeing the postwar period as the era of multiculturalism, So argues that we should understand it as the invention of a new form of racial inequality—one that continues to shape the arts and literature today.Interweaving data analysis of large-scale patterns with a consideration of Toni Morrison’s career as an editor at Random House and readings of individual works by Octavia Butler, Henry Dumas, Amy Tan, and others, So develops a form of criticism that brings together qualitative and quantitative approaches to the study of literature. A vital and provocative work for American literary studies, critical race studies, and the digital humanities, Redlining Culture shows the importance of data and computational methods for understanding and challenging racial inequality

È il febbraio del 1887 quando in Italia giunge la notizia: a Dògali, in Eritrea, cinquecento soldati italiani sono stati uccisi dalle truppe etiopi che cercano di contrastarne le mire coloniali. Un'ondata di sdegno invade la città. In quel momento Lafanu Brown sta rientrando dalla sua passeggiata: è una pittrice americana da anni cittadina di Roma e la sua pelle è nera. Su di lei si riversa la rabbia della folla, finché un uomo la porta in salvo. È a lui che Lafanu decide di raccontarsi: la nascita in una tribù indiana Chippewa, lo straniero dalla pelle scurissima che amò sua madre e scomparve, la donna che le permise di studiare ma la considerò un'ingrata, l'abolizionismo e la violenza, l'incontro con la sua mentore Lizzie Manson, fino alla grande scelta di salire su un piroscafo diretta verso l'Europa, in un Grand Tour alla ricerca della bellezza e dell'indipendenza. Nella figura di Lafanu si uniscono le vite di due donne afrodiscendenti realmente esistite: la scultrice Edmonia Lewis e l'ostetrica e attivista Sarah Parker Remond, giunte in Italia dagli Stati Uniti dove fino alla guerra civile i neri non erano nemmeno considerati cittadini. A Lafanu si affianca Leila, ragazza di oggi, che tesse fili tra il passato e il destino suo e delle cugine rimaste in Africa e studia il tòpos dello schiavo nero incatenato presente in tante opere d'arte. Igiaba Scego scrive in queste pagine un romanzo di formazione dalle tonalità ottocentesche nel quale innesta vivide schegge di testimonianza sul presente, e ci racconta di un mondo nel quale almeno sulla carta tutti erano liberi di viaggiare: perché fare memoria della storia è sempre il primo passo verso il futuro che vogliamo costruire."

    When does racial description become racism? Critical race studies has not come up with good answers to this question because it has overemphasized the visuality of race. According to dominant theories of racial formation, we see race on bodies and persons and then link those perceptions to unjust practices of racial inequality. Racial Worldmaking argues that we do not just see race. We are taught when, where, and how to notice race by a set of narrative and interpretive strategies. These strategies are named "racial worldmaking" because they get us to notice race not just at the level of the biological representation of bodies or the social categorization of persons. Rather, they get us to embed race into our expectations for how the world operates. As Mark C. Jerng shows us, these strategies find their most powerful expression in popular genre fiction: science fiction, romance, and fantasy. Taking up the work of H.G. Wells, Margaret Mitchell, Samuel Delany, Philip K. Dick and others, Racial Worldmaking rethinks racial formation in relation to both African American and Asian American studies, as well as how scholars have addressed the relationships between literary representation and racial ideology. In doing so, it engages questions central to our current moment: In what ways do we participate in racist worlds, and how can we imagine and build one that is anti-racist?
