    Departing from the traditional focus on Erasmus as philologist and moralist, Rhetoric and Theology shows how Erasmus attempted to interpret Scripture by way of a rhetorical theology that focuses on the figurative, metaphorical quality of language, with a view to moral and theological reform. Manfred Hoffmann concentrates on the theological scources of Erasmus' hermeneutic from 1518 to 1535, especially the Ratio verae theologiae, the Ecclesiastes, and the exegesis of Old and New Testament texts. He shows that Erasmus' hermeneutic is based on the concept of language as mediation. Words do not have the power to represent the truth unambiguously, but they appeal to our understanding in ways that draw us to the truth through the process of interpretation. For Erasmus it is through allegory that the divine Word carries out its mediation between letter and spirit.Erasmus used the tools of rhetoric to read and understand Scripture, and thereby constructed a theological framework that has a direct relationship with his hermeneutic. Rhetorical theologians imitate the invention, disposition, inverbation, and delivery of divine speech by clarifying its composition, ordering its subject matter, internalizing its content, and communicating its transforming power of persuasion. Rhetoric provided Erasmus with the tools for finding theological loci in Scripture, drawing from it a repertoire for knowing and living, and translating it into sacred oratory

    Salomon Glassius hat wie kein zweiter die lutherische Bibelhermeneutik systematisiert und die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von sensus literalis und sensus mysticus einer präzisen Klärung zugeführt. Diese in der "Philologia Sacra" (1623-1636) dokumentierte Leistung des Schülers, Freundes und Nachfolgers Johann Gerhards steht zunächst im Blickpunkt. So wird erkennbar, wie Glassius die grammatischen und rhetorischen Phänomene der Heiligen Schrift aufnimmt und in Anknüpfung an altkirchliche, reformatorische und rabbinische Hermeneutiker entfaltet und theologisch gewichtet. Auf dieser Basis erfolgt eine umfangreiche Sichtung der figürlichen Auslegung des Alten Testaments in den exegetischen, erbauungstheologischen und homiletischen Werken, die Glassius zunächst als Professor in Jena im akademischen Kontext und schließlich als langjähriger Superintendent von Sachsen-Gotha um einer lebenspraktischen Rezeption des Christusevangeliums willen zur Anwendung bringt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist eine historisch aufgeklärte Wahrnehmung der Besonderheiten präkantianischer Hermeneutik, Exegese und Homiletik und der daraus sich ergebenden Impulse für die zeitgenössische Hermeneutikdebatte sowie für die homiletische Arbeit mit alttestamentlichen Texten The Jena Hebrew scholar and Gotha superintendent Glassius was known for his monumental work of hermeneutics Philologia Sacra (1623–1636). The study initially focuses on Glassius’ presentation and theological take on biblical grammar and rhetoric. Sollte es diese - moraltheologisch vernachlässigten motivationalen - Ressourcen geben, stellen sich interessante Folgefragen: Woraus beziehen diese Motivationen ihre Stärke und Verbindlichkeit? Wie stehen sie zu ihren 'säkularen' Pendants? Wozu wird überhaupt motiviert? Gibt es mehrfache Motivationen bzw. in diesem Sinn Übermotivationen als Konflikt differenter Motivationen? Und wie steht der motivierte und motivierende Glaube zur mehrfachen Dementierung eben dieser Eigenschaft, auf etwas aus zu sein, zu intervenieren, etwas zu verändern? Ist ein demotivierender Glaube ein bloßer Widerspruch in sich oder eine veritable Möglichkeit an sich?

These texts are expressions of the lives and dynamic minds of women who developed sophisticated, systematic spiritual and textual approaches to the divine, to their denominations or religious traditions, and to the mainstream culture around them. Women do not simply live out theologies authored by men. Rather, Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers and Theologies of the Afterlife: A Step Closer to Heaven is grounded in the radical notion that the theological principles crafted by women and derived from women's experiences, intellectual habits, and organizational capabilities are foundational to American literature itself.

    Much has been written about Spenser's theological allegory and its sources but, until now, no one has suggested sustained patristic influence. Harold Weatherby argues that taking patristic theology as a measure for certain episodes in The Faerie Queene affords more convincing evidence than the familiar (usually Protestant) references. He shows that sixteenth-century editions of the works of the principal Fathers were available to Spenser, and that, in addition, there appeard to be considerable interest in the Fathers at Spenser's college, Pembroke. With the additional evidence of the poem itself, Weatherby introduces the theory that patristic theology affected the poet's understanding of Christianity. To demonstrate, the author examines seven allegorical episodes in The Faerie Queene, each of which has had extensive pervious interpretive attention, quite different from the approach taken here. He looks closely at the dragon fight and the figure of St George; the subsequent nuptial celebration with Una and Red Crosse; the role of Belphoebe as an emblem of temperance (as the Fathers conceive temperance); Guyon's descent into Mammon's cave; Guyon's encounter with Mordant, Amavia, and Ruddymane, and his futile effort to cleanse the child's hands; Arthur's defeat of Maleger; and the presentation of Dame Nature. In each of these episodes, patristic thought is seen to have significantly shaped the allegory. The epilogue suggest how patristic thought influenced Spenser's presentation of eros in Books III and IV, introducting a new hypothesis about these books and about Spenser's conception of chastity

Harold Weatherby argues that taking patristic theology as a measure for certain episodes in The Faerie Queene affords more convincing evidence than the familiar (usually Protestant) references. He shows that sixteenth-century editions of the works of the principal Fathers were available to Spenser, and that, in addition, there appeard to be considerable interest in the Fathers at Spenser's college, Pembroke. With the additional evidence of the poem itself, Weatherby introduces the theory that patristic theology affected the poet's understanding of Christianity. To demonstrate, the author examines seven allegorical episodes in The Faerie Queene, each of which has had extensive pervious interpretive attention, quite different from the approach taken here. He looks closely at the dragon fight and the figure of St George; the subsequent nuptial celebration with Una and Red Crosse; the role of Belphoebe as an emblem of temperance (as the Fathers conceive temperance); Guyon's descent into Mammon's cave; Guyon's encounter with Mordant, Amavia, and Ruddymane, and his futile effort to cleanse the child's hands; Arthur's defeat of Maleger; and the presentation of Dame Nature. In each of these episodes, patristic thought is seen to have significantly shaped the allegory. The epilogue suggest how patristic thought influenced Spenser's presentation of eros in Books III and IV, introducting a new hypothesis about these books and about Spenser's conception of chastity

Harold Weatherby argues that taking patristic theology as a measure for certain episodes in The Faerie Queene affords more convincing evidence than the familiar (usually Protestant) references. He shows that sixteenth-century editions of the works of the principal Fathers were available to Spenser, and that, in addition, there appeard to be considerable interest in the Fathers at Spenser's college, Pembroke. With the additional evidence of the poem itself, Weatherby introduces the theory that patristic theology affected the poet's understanding of Christianity. To demonstrate, the author examines seven allegorical episodes in The Faerie Queene, each of which has had extensive pervious interpretive attention, quite different from the approach taken here. He looks closely at the dragon fight and the figure of St George; the subsequent nuptial celebration with Una and Red Crosse; the role of Belphoebe as an emblem of temperance (as the Fathers conceive temperance); Guyon's descent into Mammon's cave; Guyon's encounter with Mordant, Amavia, and Ruddymane, and his futile effort to cleanse the child's hands; Arthur's defeat of Maleger; and the presentation of Dame Nature. In each of these episodes, patristic thought is seen to have significantly shaped the allegory. The epilogue suggest how patristic thought influenced Spenser's presentation of eros in Books III and IV, introducting a new hypothesis about these books and about Spenser's conception of chastity

    Departing from the traditional focus on Erasmus as philologist and moralist, Rhetoric and Theology shows how Erasmus attempted to interpret Scripture by way of a rhetorical theology that focuses on the figurative, metaphorical quality of language, with a view to moral and theological reform. Manfred Hoffmann concentrates on the theological scources of Erasmus' hermeneutic from 1518 to 1535, especially the Ratio verae theologiae, the Ecclesiastes, and the exegesis of Old and New Testament texts. He shows that Erasmus' hermeneutic is based on the concept of language as mediation. Words do not have the power to represent the truth unambiguously, but they appeal to our understanding in ways that draw us to the truth through the process of interpretation. For Erasmus it is through allegory that the divine Word carries out its mediation between letter and spirit.Erasmus used the tools of rhetoric to read and understand Scripture, and thereby constructed a theological framework that has a direct relationship with his hermeneutic. Rhetorical theologians imitate the invention, disposition, inverbation, and delivery of divine speech by clarifying its composition, ordering its subject matter, internalizing its content, and communicating its transforming power of persuasion. Rhetoric provided Erasmus with the tools for finding theological loci in Scripture, drawing from it a repertoire for knowing and living, and translating it into sacred oratory

    Salomon Glassius hat wie kein zweiter die lutherische Bibelhermeneutik systematisiert und die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von sensus literalis und sensus mysticus einer präzisen Klärung zugeführt. Diese in der "Philologia Sacra" (1623-1636) dokumentierte Leistung des Schülers, Freundes und Nachfolgers Johann Gerhards steht zunächst im Blickpunkt. So wird erkennbar, wie Glassius die grammatischen und rhetorischen Phänomene der Heiligen Schrift aufnimmt und in Anknüpfung an altkirchliche, reformatorische und rabbinische Hermeneutiker entfaltet und theologisch gewichtet. Auf dieser Basis erfolgt eine umfangreiche Sichtung der figürlichen Auslegung des Alten Testaments in den exegetischen, erbauungstheologischen und homiletischen Werken, die Glassius zunächst als Professor in Jena im akademischen Kontext und schließlich als langjähriger Superintendent von Sachsen-Gotha um einer lebenspraktischen Rezeption des Christusevangeliums willen zur Anwendung bringt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist eine historisch aufgeklärte Wahrnehmung der Besonderheiten präkantianischer Hermeneutik, Exegese und Homiletik und der daraus sich ergebenden Impulse für die zeitgenössische Hermeneutikdebatte sowie für die homiletische Arbeit mit alttestamentlichen Texten The Jena Hebrew scholar and Gotha superintendent Glassius was known for his monumental work of hermeneutics Philologia Sacra (1623–1636).     This book explores the prophetic characteristics of literature, particularly poetry, that seek to reimagine the world in which it is written. Using theological and philosophical insights it charts the relentless impulse of literature to propose alternative visions, practicable or utopian, and point toward possibilities of renewal and change. Drawing from each of the three main Abrahamic religions, as well as Greek and Latin classics, an international group of scholars utilise a diverse range of analytical and interpretive methods to draw out the prophetic voice in poetry. Looking at the writings of figures like T. S. Elliot, Blake, Wittgenstein and Isaiah, the theme of the prophetic is shown to be of timely importance given the current state of geo-political challenges and uncertainties and offers a much-needed critical discussion of these broad cultural questions. This collection of essays offers readers an insight into the constructive power of literature. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars working in Religion and the Arts, Religious Studies, Theology and Aesthetics

    Self-reflection, as the hallmark of the modern age, originates more profoundly with Dante than with Descartes. This book rewrites modern intellectual history, taking Dante's lyrical language in Paradiso as enacting a Trinitarian self-reflexivity that gives a theological spin to the birth of the modern subject already with the Troubadours. The ever more intense self-reflexivity that has led to our contemporary secular world and its technological apocalypse can lead alsoto the poetic vision of other worlds such as those experienced by Dante. Facing the same nominalist crisis as Duns Scotus, his exact contemporary and the precursor of scientific method, Dante's thought and work indicate an alternative modernity along the path not taken. Thisother wayshows up in Nicholas of Cusa's conjectural science and in Giambattista Vico's new science of imagination as alternatives tothe exclusive reign of positiveempirical science. In continuity with Dante's vision, they contribute to a reappropriation of self-reflection for the humanities
