"This volume of essays, from an internationally renowned group of scholars, challenges popular ways of understanding how Judaism and Christianity came to be separate religions in antiquity. Essays in the volume reject the belief that there was one parting at an early point in time and contest the argument that there was no parting until a very late date. Scholars re-examine texts authored by ancient worshipers of Israel's God, resulting in a complex account of multiple partings that occurred at different places and paces in myriad ways around the ancient Mediterranean in the first four centuries CE"-- Samaritans, Jews, and Christians: multiple partings and multiple ways / Timothy Wardle -- John and Jesus in Josephus: a prelude to the 'parting of the ways' / Albert I. The challenges of the Late Modern form the shared horizon of Christian and Buddhist religious-hermeneutic efforts to demonstrate the relevance to everyday life of their respective transmitted doctrines. This work applies an interreligious comparison based on the implicit homiletics of Paul Tillich to examine how a particular understanding of faith and reality affects religious communication. This approach reveals that Buddhism has been a kerygmatic religion from the start, as is especially clear in the tradition of Japanese Shin Buddhism

Einführung in die Problematik --Teil I.Wu Leichuan: Biographische Skizze, Schrifttum und die Prolegomena seiner Hermeneutik --Teil II.Der Sozialreformer Mozi Das Leben und die Lehre Mozis nach Wu Leichuan und seine "christliche" Sicht der chinesischen Tradition --Teil III.Der Sozialreformer Jesus Das Leben und die Lehre Jesu nach Wu Leichuan und seine "ruistische" Sicht der christlichen Tradition --Teil IV.Mozi und Jesus: Reinterpretation und Dialog --Abschliessende bemerkungen: Verschmelzung der Horizonte This work explores the Christian-Chinese encounter from a non-Confucian perspective, exemplified by the comparison between Jesus and the philosopher Mozi (5th c. B.C.). The investigation is based on the work Mozi yu Yesu of the Hanlin scholar and convert Wu Leichuan (1869–1944). The first part gives a biographical sketch and discusses the writings and prolegomena of the Sino-Christian hermeneutics of Wu. Part two describes the social reformer Mozi and his teachings that are interpreted by Wu in a Christian way. Part three presents the life and teachings of Jesus according to Wu as well as his attempts to establish a “Ruist” view of the Christian tradition. Part four is dedicated to the comparison between Mozi and Jesus, with special emphasis on Wu’s understanding of religion. The fifth part refers to the defectiveness of the Chinese and Christian traditions and to the necessity of a return to the “true and original Dao.”
