Bradley J. Bitner shows that Paul carefully considered the Roman colonial context of Corinth, which underlay numerous ecclesial conflicts. Roman politics, however, cannot account for the entire shape of Paul's response. Bridging the Hellenism-Judaism divide that has characterised much of Pauline scholarship, Bitner argues that Paul also appropriated Jewish-biblical notions of covenant. Epigraphical and papyrological evidence indicates that his chosen content and manner are best understood with reference to an ecclesial politeia informed by a distinctively Christ-centred political theology. This emerges as a 'politics of thanksgiving' in 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 and as a 'politics of construction' in 3:5-4:5, where Paul redirects gratitude and glory to God in Christ. This innovative account of Paul's political theology offers fresh insight into his pastoral strategy among nascent Gentile-Jewish assemblies"-- "Paul's Political Strategy in 1 Corinthians 1-4 Constitution and Covenant Volume 163 This volume examines 1 Corinthians 1-4 within first- century politics, demonstrating the significance of Corinth's constitution to the interpretation of Paul's letter. "The first English-language monograph on a significant yet often-neglected Latin Christian history from late antiquity (4th century CE), this book introduces a little-known text and shows how Classical culture and Bible heroes helped Christians conceptualize Jewish history in late antiquity"-- In this volume, Carson Bay focuses on an important but neglected work of Late Antiquity: Pseudo-Hegesippus' On the Destruction of Jerusalem (De Excidio Hierosolymitano), a Latin history of later Second Temple Judaism written during the fourth century CE. Bay explores the presence of so many Old Testament figures in a work that recounts the Roman-Jewish War (66-73 CE) and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. By applying the lens of Roman exemplarity to Pseudo-Hegesippus, he elucidates new facets of Biblical reception, history-writing, and anti-Judaism in a text from the formative first century of Christian Empire. The author also offers new insights into the Christian historiographical imagination and how Biblical heroes and Classical culture helped Christians to write anti-Jewish history. Revealing novel aspects of the influence of the Classical literary tradition on early Christian texts, this book also newly questions the age-old distinction between the Christian and the Classical (or 'pagan') in the ancient Mediterranean world

Enemies of the Cross' employs classical rhetorical analysis to examine how Paul structures a deliberative argument using his understanding of the 'cross of Christ'. His goals are to guide/advise the Philippian community through internal and external strife (ch. 2), combat his opponents (ch. 3), and develop his notion of the eschatological community (3:18-21). Williams proposes that while Paul has a 'theology of the death of Jesus', of which cross terminology is one of several aspects, this terminology is used almost exclusively in polemical/conflictual contexts. Hence Paul appears to be using '

This is the first English translation of a text that Cahill identifies as the first formal commentary on Mark's gospel. Probably written in Ireland in the first half of the seventh century, the commentary was for almost 1000 years attributed to St. Jerome and as such exercised incalculable influence on subsequent commentary, including Aquinas's Catena Aurea. This translation will make this unique text available to readers who do not know Latin and will serve as an invaluable introduction to late patristic and early medieval biblical exegesis

Description based upon print version of record

This narrative study uses Mark 3:22-30 as an interpretive lens to show that the Gospel of Mark has a thoroughly apocalyptic outlook. Unlike many narrative studies, this book clarifies Mark's symbols, metaphors, and themes in view of the socio-religious context in which it was written. Mark's apocalyptic discourse portrays the Spirit-filled Jesus in a struggle against Satan to free people for a community that does God's will. This discourse develops throughout the Gospel, functioning to persuade readers that God displays power from weakness, and offering a coherent reading of Mark

In the last several decades, scholars largely agree that the NT term?mysterion? is a terminus technicus, originating from Daniel.?Mystery? constitutes a revelation of God?s hidden eschatological wisdom. This project traces the word in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other sectors of Judaism. Like Daniel, the term consistently retains eschatological connotations. The monograph then examines how mystery functions within 1 Corinthians and seeks to explain why the term is often employed. Throughout the letter, Paul alludes to Daniel, especially in conjunction with the notion of mystery. Of particular i

Toward the center of Pauline hermeneutics -- Paul and the hermeneutics of the apostolic kerygma -- Figuration and the divine economy -- Introducing prosopological exegesis -- Prosopological exegesis in Paul's letters -- The implications of kerygmatic hermeneutics

Against the prevailing models for understanding the Apostle Paul's interpretation and use of scripture, Matthew Bates proposes a fresh approach toward developing a Pauline hermeneutic. He combines historical criticism with an intertextual strategy that takes seriously the work of the early church fathers, and in so doing fills a void in current scholarship. Bates applies his method to both oft-referenced and underutilized passages in the writings of Paul and suggests a new model for Pauline hermeneutics that is centered on the apostolic proclamation of Christ

Apocalyptic' is a key concept for 20th century interpretation of Paul, embracing several major figures and strands of inquiry. But the category 'apocalyptic' has itself of late come in for scrutiny, which in turn reflects back on 'apocalyptic' interpretation of Paul. This study offers a review of interpretation, ranging beyond Pauline studies to address 'apocalyptic' interpretation generally. Sustained attention to what interpreters are doing with this category, placed alongside what is claimed as being done, reveals a hermeneutical story of considerable interest and wide relevance, which situ

At first glance the Markan transfiguration scene (Mk. 9:2-8) is all about light, sound and spectacle. Commentators see revealed in this scene a sparkling vision of God's gloryGÇöthe light that banishes the shadow of incomprehension and by which the hidden truth of the Gospel finally becomes clear. But have commentators been blinded by their dazzling evaluations of Mark's theology? For, despite all the splendor and sparkle, the Markan transfiguration remains a difficult scene to interpret. The author discusses Paul's reading of his scriptures by exploring his intertextual echoes and allusions to exodus themes and motifs in Israel's scriptures and the literature of Second-Temple Judaism. This exploration reveals that Paul evoked the exodus narrative in a way that is both faithful to the tradition and innovative for his new situation in Christ. Paul affirms and transforms the tradition in ways that speak to the tensions present in both Galatians and Romans

"In The Latin New Testament, H.A.G. Houghton provides a comprehensive introduction to the history and development of the Latin New Testament. Drawing on major editions and recent advances in scholarship, he offers a new synthesis which brings together evidence from Christian authors and biblical manuscripts from earliest times to the late Middle Ages. All manuscripts identified as containing Old Latin evidence for the New Testament are described in a catalogue, along with those featured in the two principal modern editions of the Vulgate. A user's guide is provided for these editions and the other key scholarly tools for studying the Latin New Testament."--Publisher description

"It is widely accepted by New Testament scholars that the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles probably originated as two parts of one work by a single author. In spite of this, the books have been assigned to very different genres: Luke is traditionally viewed as a biography of Jesus, and Acts as a history of the early church. Comparing in detail the structure and content of Acts with the formal features of history, novel, epic and biography, Sean Adams challenges this division. Applying both ancient and modern genre theory, he argues that the best genre parallel for the Acts of the Apostles is in fact collected biography. Offering a nuanced and sophisticated understanding of genre theory, along with an insightful argument regarding the composition and purpose of Acts, this book will be of interest to those studying the New Testament, Acts, genre theory and ancient literature"--"It is widely accepted by New Testament scholars that the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles probably originated as two parts of one work by a single author"--
