    Im theologischen Diskurs um die Heilshoffnung der nicht an den Messias Jesus glaubenden Juden gelten die paulinischen Aussagen in Röm 9-11 als neutestamentliche Basistexte, während der Beitrag des lukanischen Doppelwerks oft unterschätzt wird.Diese Monographie stellt das Potential des lukanischen Ansatzes vor. Sie untersucht biblische Traditionen zur Heilshoffnung Israels, die von Lukas und Paulus rezipiert werden, und zeigt in Textanalysen aus verschiedenen Teilen des Doppelwerks, dass auch Lukas- in biblischer Tradition, jedoch mit anderem Konzept als Paulus- an einer eschatologischen Hoffnung für Israel festhält.     Die kritische Neuedition (Editio Critica Maior) der Johannesapokalypse sieht sich einer ebenso außergewöhnlichen wie faszinierenden Texttradition gegenüber. Umfangreiche Untersuchungen zur Überlieferungsgeschichte des letzten Buches des Neuen Testaments sind daher maßgebliche Wegbereiter der anstehenden Textkonstitution. Dies gilt sowohl für die griechischen Handschriften als auch den Versionen und patristischen Zitaten der Apokalypse. Although it is disputed whether there was a genre of ‘apocalyptic literature,’ it is obvious that numerous texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come. Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine) revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel) to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism, ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most characteristic features of these texts is their specific interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come. Against this background the volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different periods and various religious backgrounds

DID TERTULLIAN KNOW A TWENTYCHAPTER GOSPEL OF JOHN? -- INDICES Indirect evidence, in the form of early translations ('versions') and biblical "ations in ancient writers ('patristic citations'), offers important testimony to the history and transmission of the New Testament. In addition to their value as early evidence for the Greek New Testament, versions have a textual tradition of their own which is often of considerable historical, theological and ecclesial significance. Early "ations have the potential to provide a form of text which can be attributed to a specific time and location, as well as shedding light on its interpretation. This volume brings together a series of original contributions on these topics, which were the focus of the Eleventh Birmingham Colloquium on the Textual Criticism of the New Testament. It includes an account of the newly-discovered third Old Syriac version of the Gospels, followed by studies of the Coptic, Arabic, Latin and Gothic traditions. Two Greek-Latin bilingual manuscripts are examined, Codex Bezae and the St Gall Bilingual Gospels, along with a comparison of verb forms in these languages. Biblical "ations are considered from Tertullian, Ambrose and John Chrysostom, as well as a work attributed to Rufinus the Syrian which has been key to identifying the origin of the Latin Vulgate: the early printed editions of this version are the subject of another chapter. Although at one remove from Greek New Testament manuscripts, the research described in this volume illustrates not just the ongoing importance and variety of indirect material, but also the way in which it may shape the theory and practice of text-critical scholarship and lead to new insights about this vast and rich tradition

How did early Christ-followers use a childlike condition to articulate concrete qualifications for God’s kingdom? Many people today romanticize Jesus’s welcoming of little children against the backdrop of the ancient world or project modern Christian conceptions of children onto biblical texts. Eschewing such a Christian exceptionalist approach to history, this book explores how the Gospel of Matthew, 1 Corinthians, and the Gospel of Thomas each associate childlikeness with God’s kingdom within their socio-cultural milieus. The book investigates these three texts vis-à-vis philosophical, historical, and archaeological materials concerning ancient children and childhood, revealing that early Christ-followers deployed various aspects of children to envision ideal human qualities or bodily forms. Calling the modern reader’s attention to children’s intellectual incapability, asexuality, and socio-political utility in ancient intellectual thought and everyday practices, the book sheds new light on the rich and diverse theological visions that early Christ-followers pursued by means of images of children

Philo’s negotiation on Abraham as the model proselyte and the founder of the Jewish nation based on his trust in God's promise relative to the Law of Moses provides a Jewish context for a corresponding debate reflected in Galatians, and suggests that there were Jewish antecedents that came close to Paul’s reasoning in his own time. This volume incorporates a number of new arguments in the context of scholarly discussion of both Galatian 3 and some of the Philonic texts, and demonstrates how the works of Philo can be applied responsibly in New Testament scholarship

    Im Jahr 2011 haben die Arbeiten an der Editio Critica Maior der Apokalypse begonnen, in deren Rahmen die vorliegende Studie entstanden und zu verorten ist. Die jüngere Textforschung ist zu der Überzeugung gekommen, dass der gegenwärtige Text der Apokalypse und das bislang gültige Modell über die Textgeschichte nicht mehr überzeugen. Es stellt sich also die Frage nach einer neuen Darstellung der Apokalypse-Überlieferung mit den Mitteln der modernen Textkritik als Bezugsrahmen für die anstehenden Textentscheidungen. Die vorgelegte Untersuchung stellt sich dieser Herausforderung und entwickelt auf der Basis von "Text-und-Textwert" und unter Berücksichtigung der Methodik der kohärenzbasierten genealogischen Methode (CBGM) ein innovatives überlieferungsgeschichtliches Modell der Apokalypse, das in bewusster Auseinandersetzung mit den Studien von Josef Schmid steht. Es wird die These vertreten, dass sich die Überlieferung der Apokalypse aus einer kontinuierlichen Entwicklung von frühen und späten Textzuständen erklärt und nicht auf der Ausbildung von vier abgrenzbaren Texttypen beruht. Damit liegt ein alternatives textgeschichtliches Erklärungsmodell für die Apokalypse vor, auf das künftige Forschungen fruchtbringend aufbauen können This study takes "Text and Textual Value" as the starting point for an extensive analysis of the Greek manuscript witnesses for the Apocalypse. It focuses on carrying out a text-critical evaluation and grouping of the texts. It also emphasizes their relationships and how the texts developed historically. For the first time since Josef Schmid, it edits the complete manuscripts of the Apocalypse, thereby giving a new picture of their transmission

    How are the resurrection appearances of Luke’s Gospel shaped to offer a climax to the narrative? How does this narrative conclusion compare to the wider ancient literary milieu? Recognition and the Resurrection Appearances of Luke 24 proposes that the ancient literary technique of recognition offers a compelling lens through which to understand the climatic role of the resurrection appearances of Jesus as depicted in Luke 24. After presenting the development of recognition in ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman literature, Thompson demonstrates how Luke 24 deploys the recognition tradition to shape the form and function of the resurrection appearances. The ancient recognition tradition not only casts light on various literary and theological features of the chapter but also shapes the way the appearances function in the wider narrative. By utilizing recognition, Luke 24 generates cognitive, affective, commissive, and hermeneutical functions for the characters internal to the narrative and for the audience. The result is a compelling climax to Luke’s Gospel that resonates with Luke’s wider literary and theological themes. This work offers a compelling analysis of the Luke’s Gospel in the ancient literary context in light of the ancient technique of recognition that will appeal to those interested in narrative approaches to the New Testament or the interpretation of the New Testament in the wider literary milieu

    This work offers a fresh reading of Paul's appropriation of Abraham in Gal 3:6-29 against the background of Jewish data, especially drawn from the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo's negotiation on Abraham as the model proselyte and the founder of the Jewish nation based on his trust in God's promise relative to the Law of Moses provides a Jewish context for a corresponding debate reflected in Galatians, and suggests that there were Jewish antecedents that came close to Paul's reasoning in his own time. Philo’s negotiation on Abraham as the model proselyte and the founder of the Jewish nation based on his trust in God's promise relative to the Law of Moses provides a Jewish context for a corresponding debate reflected in Galatians, and suggests that there were Jewish antecedents that came close to Paul’s reasoning in his own time.     Im Jahr 2011 haben die Arbeiten an der Editio Critica Maior der Apokalypse begonnen, in deren Rahmen die vorliegende Studie entstanden und zu verorten ist. Die jüngere Textforschung ist zu der Überzeugung gekommen, dass der gegenwärtige Text der Apokalypse und das bislang gültige Modell über die Textgeschichte nicht mehr überzeugen. Es stellt sich also die Frage nach einer neuen Darstellung der Apokalypse-Überlieferung mit den Mitteln der modernen Textkritik als Bezugsrahmen für die anstehenden Textentscheidungen. Die vorgelegte Untersuchung stellt sich dieser Herausforderung und entwickelt auf der Basis von "Text-und-Textwert" und unter Berücksichtigung der Methodik der kohärenzbasierten genealogischen Methode (CBGM) ein innovatives überlieferungsgeschichtliches Modell der Apokalypse, das in bewusster Auseinandersetzung mit den Studien von Josef Schmid steht. Es wird die These vertreten, dass sich die Überlieferung der Apokalypse aus einer kontinuierlichen Entwicklung von frühen und späten Textzuständen erklärt und nicht auf der Ausbildung von vier abgrenzbaren Texttypen beruht. Damit liegt ein alternatives textgeschichtliches Erklärungsmodell für die Apokalypse vor, auf das künftige Forschungen fruchtbringend aufbauen können This study takes "Text and Textual Value" as the starting point for an extensive analysis of the Greek manuscript witnesses for the Apocalypse. It focuses on carrying out a text-critical evaluation and grouping of the texts. It also emphasizes their relationships and how the texts developed historically. For the first time since Josef Schmid, it edits the complete manuscripts of the Apocalypse, thereby giving a new picture of their transmission

How did early Christ-followers use a childlike condition to articulate concrete qualifications for God’s kingdom? Many people today romanticize Jesus’s welcoming of little children against the backdrop of the ancient world or project modern Christian conceptions of children onto biblical texts. Eschewing such a Christian exceptionalist approach to history, this book explores how the Gospel of Matthew, 1 Corinthians, and the Gospel of Thomas each associate childlikeness with God’s kingdom within their socio-cultural milieus. The book investigates these three texts vis-à-vis philosophical, historical, and archaeological materials concerning ancient children and childhood, revealing that early Christ-followers deployed various aspects of children to envision ideal human qualities or bodily forms. Calling the modern reader’s attention to children’s intellectual incapability, asexuality, and socio-political utility in ancient intellectual thought and everyday practices, the book sheds new light on the rich and diverse theological visions that early Christ-followers pursued by means of images of children

In addition to their value as early evidence for the Greek New Testament, versions have a textual tradition of their own which is often of considerable historical, theological and ecclesial significance. Early "ations have the potential to provide a form of text which can be attributed to a specific time and location, as well as shedding light on its interpretation. This volume brings together a series of original contributions on these topics, which were the focus of the Eleventh Birmingham Colloquium on the Textual Criticism of the New Testament. It includes an account of the newly-discovered third Old Syriac version of the Gospels, followed by studies of the Coptic, Arabic, Latin and Gothic traditions. Two Greek-Latin bilingual manuscripts are examined, Codex Bezae and the St Gall Bilingual Gospels, along with a comparison of verb forms in these languages. Biblical "ations are considered from Tertullian, Ambrose and John Chrysostom, as well as a work attributed to Rufinus the Syrian which has been key to identifying the origin of the Latin Vulgate: the early printed editions of this version are the subject of another chapter. Although at one remove from Greek New Testament manuscripts, the research described in this volume illustrates not just the ongoing importance and variety of indirect material, but also the way in which it may shape the theory and practice of text-critical scholarship and lead to new insights about this vast and rich tradition

    The contributions in this volume are focused on the historical origins, religious provenance, and social function of ancient Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, including so-called 'Gnostic' writings. Although it is disputed whether there was a genre of 'apocalyptic literature,' it is obvious that numerous texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come. Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine) revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel) to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism, ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most characteristic features of these texts is their specific interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come. Against this background the volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different periods and various religious backgrounds
