    Katherine Mansfield is remembered for writing brilliant short stories that helped to initiate the modernist period in British fiction, and for the fact that her life - lived at a feverish pace on the fringes of Bloomsbury during the First World War - ended after a prolonged battle with pulmonary disease when she was only thirty-four years old. While her life was marred by emotional and physical afflictions of the most extreme kind, argues Mary Burgan in Illness, Gender, and Writing, her stories have seemed to exist in isolation from those afflictions - as stylish expressions of the "new," as romantic triumphs of art over tragic circumstances, or as wavering expressions of Mansfield's early feminism. In the first book to look at the continuum of a writer's life and work in terms of that writer's various illnesses, Burgan explores Katherine Mansfield's recurrent emotional and physical afflictions as the ground of her writing. Mansfield is remarkably suited to this approach, Burgan contends, because her "illnesses" ranged from such early psychological afflictions as separation anxiety, body image disturbances, and fear of homosexuality to bodily afflictions that included miscarriage and abortion, venereal disease, and tuberculosis. Offering a thorough and provocative reading of Mansfield's major texts, Illness, Gender, and Writing shows how Mansfield negotiated her illnesses and, in so doing, sheds new light on the study of women's creativity. Mansfield's drive toward self-integration, Burgan concludes, was her strategy for writing - and for staying alive.

    Main description: For generations, critics have noticed in nineteenth-century American women's sentimentality a streak of masochism, but their discussions of it have over-simplified its complex relationship to women's power. Marianne Noble argues that tropes of eroticized domination in sentimental literature must be recognized for what they were: a double-edged sword of both oppression and empowerment. She begins by exploring the cultural forces that came together to create this ideology of desire, particularly Protestant discourses relating suffering to love and middle-class discourses of "true womanhood." She goes on to demonstrate how sentimental literature takes advantage of the expressive power in the convergence of these two discourses to imagine women's romantic desire. Therefore, in sentimental literature, images of eroticized domination are not antithetical to female pleasure but rather can be constitutive of it. The book, however, does not simply celebrate that fact. In readings of Warner's The Wide Wide World, Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Dickinson's sentimental poetry, it addresses the complex benefits and costs of nineteenth-century women's literary masochism. Ultimately it shows how these authors both exploited and were shaped by this discursive practice. The Masochistic Pleasures of Sentimental Literature exemplifies new trends in "Third Wave" feminist scholarship, presenting cultural and historical research informed by clear, lucid discussions of psychoanalytic and literary theory. It demonstrates that contemporary theories of masochism--including those of Deleuze, Bataille, Kristeva, Benjamin, Bersani, Noyes, Mansfield--are more relevant and comprehensible when considered in relation to sentimental literature.

    In this study, I take as my point of departure the idea that the shifts in women's social roles which occurred after the Great War and throughout the 1920s coincided with, and indeed made possible, formal shifts in women's writing. A change in social perspective occasions a change in literary perspective. However, these shifts did not result in an unhinged feeling of freedom and liberation for women. On the contrary, these writers attest to a double bind of propriety and permissiveness, of freedom and constraint, that comes through in their texts on a formal, the-matic, and affective level. The late modernist novels I examine testify to the fact that in order to "rise to the occasion," as Elizabeth Bowen describes the central challenge of modem life, one must be attuned to what is expected of one, to how one is viewed, to how one is judged, to how one feels, how one is to love, how one is to live. The essential fonction of perception, according to Merleau-Ponty, is "to lay the foundations of, or inaugurale, knowledge" (19). Through read-ings of the work of Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Rosamond Lehmann and Virginia Woolf, I argue that the senses become a tool for understanding how to navigate this constantly shifting social context. Each chapter concentrates on a way in which the authors considered articulate the tensions between the self and society through an attentive activation of the physical as well as knowledge-based senses. A major narrative strategy adopted by these writers, I will argue, is the bend back-- ramer than proceeding teleologically, their texts bend backward in a therapeutic attempt to revalue the present, or to understand how it came to be so, in a larger attempt to make sense of their moment and their role within it Cette étude prend comme point de départ l'idée que les changements survenus après la Première guerre mondiale dans le rôle social des femmes ont coïncidé avec, voire même facilité, des changements dans l'écriture des femmes auteures de l'époque. On peut en effet constater que des mutations sociales (d'ordre social) ont entraîné des mutations littéraires (d'ordre litttéraire). Pour autant, ces évolutions n'ont pas simplement fait advenir un sentiment de liberté chez les femmes. Au contraire, ces écrivaines mettent en oeuvre un paradoxe constant entre liberté et contrainte, permissivité et décorum, que l'on retrouve dans leurs textes sur un plan formel, thématique et affectif. Inscrits dans la période dite "late modem", les romans que j'examine témoignent du fait qu'il faut être sensible aux attentes qui pèsent sur soi afin de se montrer à la hauteur [rise to the occasion}, ainsi qu' Elizabeth Bowen décrit le défi central de la vie moderne. L'expérience féminine décrite par ces textes est une série d'attentes, de jugements et de questionnements nécessitant un développement supérieur des sens. La fonction essentielle de la perception, selon Merleau-Ponty, est de "fonder ou inaugurer la connaissance" (3). En étudiant des textes d'Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf et Rosamond Lehmann, je souhaite montrer que les sens deviennent un outil qui permet d'évoluer au sein de ce contexte social en mutation perpétuelle. Chaque chapitre se concentre sur la façon dont ces auteures articulent des tensions entre le soi et la société en mobilisant des sens physiques ainsi que psychologiques.     Le présent travail se propose de jeter une lumière plurielle sur l'œuvre de l'auteure léonaise contemporaine Elena Santiago, jusqu'ici timidement éclairée par le champ de la critique. Nous avons porté sur la quasi-totalité de sa trajectoire poétique et narrative un regard qu'ont nourri des perspectives thématiques, narratologiques, imaginaires et psychocritiques. Nous avons parcouru, dans ses fulgurances silencieuses, ses réseaux analogiques, ses clairs-obscurs imaginaires et son idiosyncrasie stylistique, les latitudes d'un univers éminemment personnel. S'est révélée à nous, dans sa dimension proprement existentielle, dans ses racines ontologiques, une écriture qui fait la part belle au monde de l'enfance, conjointement mythifié et démystifié au gré des parcours initiatiques déroulés. Nous avons été sensible aux pulsations mémorielles, au timbre onirique, aux inflexions parfois localistes d'une prose qui loge, dans son extrême élaboration discursive, une logique immanente, une vérité pré-formelle dont la signifiance exige des contre-langages. Lieu d'une cosmologie du dés-astre, du deuil, d'un étoilement formel à la mesure de la blessure narcissique du sujet, l'espace scriptural se narrativise et module une fantasmatique régressive. Dans l'intertextualité intime du corpus, dans les miroirs d'encre de la conscience scripturale, dans le pouls dyadique de l'écriture, nous nous sommes attachée à cerner les linéaments maternels d'un mythe personnel, d'une quête de l'Absente éternellement présente The present essay aims at casting a multi-focused light upon contemporary Spanish leonese author Elena Santiago whose literary work has so far hardly been investigated by criticism area. We examined most of narrative and poetic trajectories through a multi-modal approach together thematic, narratologic, imaginary and psychocritic. We scanned her weighty silences, her analogical nexus, her imaginary chiaroscuros and stylistic idiosyncrasy encased in her thoroughty personal universe. We disclosed the absolutely existential dimension and the ontological essence of an art which exposes childhood and its world both idealized and demystified according to the initiatic itineraries taken. We were aware of the memory beats, the dreamlike tone and the eventual localism of a prose which allows in its extremely discursive eleboration an immanent logic, a pre-formal resorting to counter-languages to be meaningful. As the place of a dis-aster and mourning cosmology, of a formal dispersion measuring up to subject's narcissistic wound, the scriptural space narrativises itself and modulates a regressive phantasm. In the intimate intertextuality of corpus, in the scriptural subject's mirror of ink, in the dyadic pulse of writing, we applied ourself to defining the maternal outlines of a personal myth, of a quest for the perpetually present Absentee

    Mère manquante ou mère absente ? Qui est la mère ? Où est-elle ? Qui la nomme et qu'est-ce qui la désigne? Qui est-elle qui prépare ainsi l'enfant à la vie dans ce don inouï qu'est l'acceptation de l'inévitable séparation? Mère qui doit se préparer à n'être plus convoquée qu'au passé, au doux temps de l'enfance; mère qu'appelle le soldat au moment de mourir sur la terre de ce combat livré pour une patrie qui pour être mieux défendue se qualifie elle-même de « mère ». La mère sans aucun doute est une femme qui pleure. Est-elle encore humaine ou à mi-chemin entre la femme et la divinité ? C'est la mère de l'Annonciation. L'Annonciation annonce la naissance du Christ en même temps qu'elle préfigure le drame de Passion et de sa mort. Pascal Quignard tout au long de son oeuvre, nous a habitués à lier l'objet d'amour maternel, son manque cruel et les abysses dans la dépression, de l'anorexie et du silence. La mère absente ne permet pas la séparation salutaire ; il ne peut y avoir de séparation là où il n'y a pas eu rencontre. Chez tout adulte en souffrance de mère, on n'entend plus que le ressassement incessant des reproches, des révoltes et douleurs dans un long procès dont on ne sait plus bien qui, de la victime ou du coupable attend de l'autre le pardon Missing mother or absent mother?
