    This book analyzes the iconographic traditions of Jeremiah and of melancholy to show how Donne, Herbert, and Milton each fashions himself after the icons presented in Rembrandt's Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem , Sluter's sculpture of Jeremiah in the Well of Moses, and Michelangelo's fresco of Jeremiah in the Sistine Chapel. Reuben Sánchez is Lecturer at Sam Houston State University, USA. Seventeenth-century authors so thoroughly imbued the language and imagery of the Bible in vernacular translation that their texts are to be read as attempts to inscribe themselves within the realm of the sacred. I analyze how three seventeenth-century English authors fashion themselves as a specific biblical figure, and how they fashion themselves in their works in order to bring their spiritual lives in line with the narrative arch of a biblical type. In this biblical guise Donne, Herbert, and Milton each hopes to move God to his circumstances as He responded in biblical times to the original type; each author also hopes to move the reader to act to reform himself and thereby avoid the fate of the biblical Israelites. By engaging the art of the period I isolate and describe Donne's, Herbert's, and Milton's self-fashioning as the melancholic Jeremiah. Through a consideration of certain paintings, sculptures, and emblems, I present literature in a broader cultural context, thereby employing an interdisciplinary approach. There are several different Renaissance images of Jeremiah I discuss to give the reader an idea of the iconographic tradition which develops around this biblical figure, but I focus on three images in particular: Claus Sluter's sculpture, the Well of Moses (1404), Rembrandt's painting, 'The Prophet Jeremiah Mourning over the Destruction of Jerusalem' (1630), and Michelangelo's fresco of Jeremiah on the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512). I present detailed analyses of these three works in order to show how and why each of the three English authors fashions himself after one of these three images, or types, of Jeremiah: Donne after Rembrandt's Jeremiah, Herbert after Sluter's Jeremiah, and Milton after Michelangelo's Jeremiah

Die Untersuchung zielt auf eine möglichst genaue Evaluation des Lykophronischen Stils, um die Fragen nachträglicher Textänderungen und der Datierung zu beantworten. Lykophrons Autorschaft der Alexandra darf als gesichert gelten: Sie ist weder in Teilen noch im ganzen später entstanden. Das vorliegende Buch präsentiert den griechischen Text mit deutscher Übersetzung, detailliertem Kommentar und einer Einleitung. Zwei Appendices, Literaturverzeichnis und Register runden den Band ab. Main description: The Alexandra is the only extant complete work of the Hellenistic poet and philologist Lycophron (3rd cent. BC). A crucial section of it deals with the fate of Odysseus. The present study undertakes an exact evaluation of Lycophron’s style in order to investigate possible later emendations and the dating of the text. Lycophron’s authorship of the Alexandra is not in doubt; the poem was not written in sections, nor was it composed later.The present volume contains the Greek text with a German translation, a detailed commentary and an introduction. The book concludes with two appendices, a bibliography and an index.

Auch das große Interesse des Textes an Religion und Ritual wird öfters hervorgehoben. Beide Aspekte wurden allerdings bisher nur im Ansatz diskutiert und selten für die Deutung des Werkes fruchtbar gemacht. Die Aspekte von Ritual und Grenzraum verbinden sich bei Statius paradigmatisch in der Figur des Amphiaraus. In einem close reading der beiden umfangreichsten Amphiaraus-Episoden zeigt Nils Jäger, wie Statius Amphiaraus vom Seher auf dem Gipfel des Bergs Aphesas zum Sehergott der Erdspalte auf dem Schlachtfeld vor Theben werden lässt. Der Autor knüpft ein komplexes motivisches Netzwerk um diese Figur, welches die jähe Einfahrt des Sehers in die Unterwelt bespiegelt, mit weiterer Bedeutung auflädt und so zur zentralen Grenzüberschreitung der ›Thebais‹ werden lässt. Die Vogelschau des Amphiaraus und Melampus (Theb. 3) sowie das Gebet des Thiodamas (Theb. 8) erweisen sich als „Knotenpunkte“ in diesem motivischen Netzwerk

Ein zentraler Abschnitt hierin stellt das Schicksal des Odysseus dar. Die Untersuchung zielt auf eine möglichst genaue Evaluation des Lykophronischen Stils, um die Fragen nachträglicher Textänderungen und der Datierung zu beantworten. Lykophrons Autorschaft der Alexandra darf als gesichert gelten: Sie ist weder in Teilen noch im ganzen später entstanden. Das vorliegende Buch präsentiert den griechischen Text mit deutscher Übersetzung, detailliertem Kommentar und einer Einleitung. Zwei Appendices, Literaturverzeichnis und Register runden den Band ab. The Alexandra is the only extant complete work of the Hellenistic poet and philologist Lycophron (3rd cent. BC). A crucial section of it deals with the fate of Odysseus. The present study undertakes an exact evaluation of Lycophron’s style in order to investigate possible later emendations and the dating of the text. Lycophron’s authorship of the Alexandra is not in doubt; the poem was not written in sections, nor was it composed later.The present volume contains the Greek text with a German translation, a detailed commentary and an introduction. The book concludes with two appendices, a bibliography and an index.

    This book analyzes the iconographic traditions of Jeremiah and of melancholy to show how Donne, Herbert, and Milton each fashions himself after the icons presented in Rembrandt's Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem , Sluter's sculpture of Jeremiah in the Well of Moses, and Michelangelo's fresco of Jeremiah in the Sistine Chapel. Reuben Sánchez is Lecturer at Sam Houston State University, USA. Seventeenth-century authors so thoroughly imbued the language and imagery of the Bible in vernacular translation that their texts are to be read as attempts to inscribe themselves within the realm of the sacred. I analyze how three seventeenth-century English authors fashion themselves as a specific biblical figure, and how they fashion themselves in their works in order to bring their spiritual lives in line with the narrative arch of a biblical type. In this biblical guise Donne, Herbert, and Milton each hopes to move God to his circumstances as He responded in biblical times to the original type; each author also hopes to move the reader to act to reform himself and thereby avoid the fate of the biblical Israelites. By engaging the art of the period I isolate and describe Donne's, Herbert's, and Milton's self-fashioning as the melancholic Jeremiah. Through a consideration of certain paintings, sculptures, and emblems, I present literature in a broader cultural context, thereby employing an interdisciplinary approach. There are several different Renaissance images of Jeremiah I discuss to give the reader an idea of the iconographic tradition which develops around this biblical figure, but I focus on three images in particular: Claus Sluter's sculpture, the Well of Moses (1404), Rembrandt's painting, 'The Prophet Jeremiah Mourning over the Destruction of Jerusalem' (1630), and Michelangelo's fresco of Jeremiah on the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512). I present detailed analyses of these three works in order to show how and why each of the three English authors fashions himself after one of these three images, or types, of Jeremiah: Donne after Rembrandt's Jeremiah, Herbert after Sluter's Jeremiah, and Milton after Michelangelo's Jeremiah

    Die Studie nimmt die Wiederkehr des prophetischen Autorschaftsbildes und die Reichweite visionärer Poetiken in der Moderne in den Blick. Sie zeichnet nach, wie Autorschaft und Prophetie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erneut zusammenkommen und welche Traditionen prophetischer Dichtung von Autoren wie Nietzsche, Rimbaud, Thomas Mann, George, Rilke, Trakl und Werfel aufgegriffen und modifiziert werden. Herausgestellt wird das produktive, teilweise auch brüchige Wechselspiel von Inszenierungen heiliger Autorschaft zwischen Selbstermächtigung und Entsubjektivierung einerseits und den prophetischen Sprachfiguren andererseits. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Autoren und ihre Figuren nicht nur als charismatische Heilsbringer nobilitiert, sondern auch zu prophetischen Medien fremder Instanzen, v.a. der Sprache, erklärt werden. Die anachronistische Figur des Propheten erweist sich hierbei als Katalysator moderner und innovativer Ausdrucksformen. Die Nähe von Prophetie und unfreiwilliger Parodie offenbart aber auch die Tendenz zur Selbstdestruktion und die Gefahr der ideologischen Überformung des Propheten zum 'leeren' Medium. Vor diesem Hintergrund lässt sich die Debatte um die 'Wiederkehr des Autors' mit der um die 'Wiederkehr der Religion' verknüpfen

This study traces the intersection between authorship and prophecy at the beginning of the 20th century as interpreted by Mann, George, Rilke, Trakl, and Werfel. Against this backdrop, the work shows the connections between discussions about the ‘return of the author’ and about the ‘return of religion.’
