    Entwicklungen in Informationstechnologie beeinflussen Banken auf zwei verschiedene Arten. Erstens, Informationstechnologie kann die Kosten von Banken reduzieren, indem sie auf Papier basierende, arbeitsintensive Prozeduren automatisiert. Zweitens, sie verändert möglicherweise die Art und Weise wie Banken in Märkte eintreten und wie Kunden Zugang zu Bankprodukten haben. In diesem Papier konzentrieren wir uns auf den zweiten Aspekt. Wir zeigen dass Internetbanking möglicherweise die versunkenen oder irreversiblen Kosten, die beim Markteintritt entstehen, reduziert hat. Bestreitbarkeitstheorie (z.B. Baumol et al., 1982) argumentiert, dass versunkene Kosten ein zentraler Faktor für die Bestreitbarkeit von Märkten sind. In perfekt bestreitbaren Märkten sind Marktteilnehmer in der Lage kostenlos in Märkte einzutreten und sie auch wider zu verlassen. Wenn versunkene Kosten hoch sind, sind die Kosten des Markteintritts und des Marktaustritts auch hoch und der Bestreitbarkeitsgrad ist reduziert. Dieses Papier untersucht ob das Internet für Banken zu einer Reduzierung der versunkenen Kosten pro Kunden geführt hat.

    Despite the scepticism raised by the German Monopoly Commission our analysis shows that the revised theory of contestable markets can be applied to the telecommunications market better than expected. The original contestable market theory implied three assumptions necessary to be satisfied to establish potential competition: Free market entry, market exits possible without any costs, and the price adjustment lag exceeds the entry lag. Our analysis shows that if the incumbent reduces its prices slowly (high adjustment lag) and the market entry can be performed quickly (low entry lag), a new competitor will be able to earn back sunk costs ...

    The US labour market is characterized by a high skill wage mark-up and low unemployment, while the German labour market has a low skill wage mark-up and a high, mainly unskilled unemployment rate. This paper adds an innovative labour supply explanation to the discussion how these distinct labour market equilibria could arise. Skill-biased technological change induces training needs for the employees willing to work in the skilled labour market and increases relative skill demand. In a simple general equilibrium model, this paper shows that skilled insiders in the USA enjoy higher rents and increase the skilled wage mark-up stronger than in Germany in the wake of skill-biased technological change. The reason is that the unskilled outsiders in the USA do not possess a powerful credible threat to improve their position. This is a consequence from higher training and education costs in the USA for unskilled employees and unemployed. In Germany, the lower skill wage mark-up leads to an increased relative skill demand which is not matched by the skill supply and therefore mis-match unemployment arises.
