Late Capitalist Freud in Literary, Cultural, and Political Theory proposes that late Freudian theory has had an historical influence on the configuration of contemporary life and is central to the construction of twenty-first-century capitalism. This book investigates how we continue to live in the Freudian century, turning its attentions to specific crisis points within neoliberalism—the rise of figures like Trump, the development of social media as a new superego force, the economics that underpin the wellness and self-care industries as well as the contemporary consumption of popular culture—to maintain the continued historical importance of Freudian thought in all its dimensions. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, literary theory, cultural studies, and political theory, this book assesses the contribution that an historical and theoretical consideration of the late Freud can make to analyzing certain aspects of late capital.

Felix Heidenreich geht es in diesem Essay vor allem um Blumenbergs Werkzeuge. Was können wir heute mit Blumenberg anfangen? Darauf antwortet er mit dem Programmtitel der politischen Metaphorologie. Damit ist nicht nur die Analyse von politischen Metaphern gemeint, sondern die Analyse von Deutungsansprüchen, die durch historische Analogien, den Verweis auf das Wesen des Menschen oder die absolute Wahrheit begründet werden. Der Metapherngebrauch im Bundestag, die französischen Gelbwesten und die Rhetorik der Brexiteers sind Material, an denen sich die Schärfe dieses Werkzeugs erproben lässt. Ein origineller Blick auf Blumenberg, dessen Denken sich als aktuell, experimentell, ja politisch erweist.

With contributions by experts in American, British, French, German and Swedish culture, this book examines how literature has shaped the understanding of socio-economic precarity, a concept that is mostly used to describe living and working conditions in our contemporary neoliberal and platform economy. This volume shows that authors tried to develop new poetic tools and literary techniques to translate the experience of social regression and insecurity to readers. While some authors critically engage with normative models of work by zooming in on the physical and affective backlash of being a precarious worker, others even find inspiration in their own situations as writers trying to survive. Furthermore, this volume shows that precarity is not an exclusively contemporary phenomenon and that literature has always been a central medium to (critically) register forms of social insecurity. By retrieving parts of that archive, this volume paves the way to a historically nuanced view on contemporary regimes of precarious work.

With contributions by experts in American, British, French, German and Swedish culture, this book examines how literature has shaped the understanding of socio-economic precarity, a concept that is mostly used to describe living and working conditions in our contemporary neoliberal and platform economy. This volume shows that authors tried to develop new poetic tools and literary techniques to translate the experience of social regression and insecurity to readers. While some authors critically engage with normative models of work by zooming in on the physical and affective backlash of being a precarious worker, others even find inspiration in their own situations as writers trying to survive. Furthermore, this volume shows that precarity is not an exclusively contemporary phenomenon and that literature has always been a central medium to (critically) register forms of social insecurity. By retrieving parts of that archive, this volume paves the way to a historically nuanced view on contemporary regimes of precarious work.

Der Metapherngebrauch im Bundestag, die französischen Gelbwesten und die Rhetorik der Brexiteers sind Material, an denen sich die Schärfe dieses Werkzeugs erproben lässt. Ein origineller Blick auf Blumenberg, dessen Denken sich als aktuell, experimentell, ja politisch erweist.
