It may then seem counterintuitive to study photographs that disappear or are difficult to discern, but Kate Palmer Albers argues that it is precisely this current cultural moment that allows us to recognize what has always been a basic and foundational, yet unseen, condition of photography: its ephemerality. Through a series of case studies spanning the history of photography, The Night Albums takes up the provocations of artists who collectively redefine how we experience visibility. From the protracted hesitancies of photography's origins, to conceptual and performative art that has emerged since the 1960s, and to the waves of technological experimentation flourishing today, Albers foregrounds artists who offer fleeting, hidden, conditional, and future modes of visibility.     Nicholas Muellner's most recent image-text book journeys through shifting tableaux of exile and solitude in the digital age. Seductive, disorienting, informative and allegorical, In Most Tides an Island is at once a glimpse of contemporary post-Soviet queer life, a meditation on solitude and desire, and an inquiry into the nature of photography and poetry in a world consumed by cruelty, longing, resignation and hope. This work emerged from two very different impulses: to witness the lives of closeted gay men in provincial Russia, and to compose the gothic tale of a solitary woman on a remote tropical island. Along the way, these disparate pursuits - one predicated on documentation, the other on invention - unexpectedly converged. Shot along Baltic, Caribbean and Black Sea coastlines, distant landscapes met at the rocky point of Alone. From that vista, they ask: what do intimacy and solitude mean in a radically alienated but hyper-connected world? In Most Tides an Island challenges photographic and literary conventions, collapsing portraiture and landscape, documentary and fiction, metaphor and description into the artist's distinct form of hybrid narrative. This shape-shifting work is threaded together by the voice of the wandering narrator and the unexpected visual echoes between these far-flung landscapes. A mysterious stream of faceless but expressive online profile pictures further links the divergent stories. "In 1856, when Charles Lutwidge Dodgson adopted the pen name Lewis Carroll, photography was still a young medium, and presented uncharted possibilities for representation. Carroll soon found his forte in photographing children, and his photograph Alice Liddell as a Beggar Child (1858) is now one of the most famous Victorian depictions of a child. Carroll's engagement with childhood occurred at a critical juncture, when the idea of "childhood" was just beginning to attain status as a life stage with characteristics distinct from adulthood. In this sense, Carroll's photographs are especially rich, incisive, and complex: they embody conflicting definitions of childhood intertwined with constructions of gender, class, bodies, age, sexuality, and whiteness; behavioural norms and propriety; innocence and experience; fantasy, play, and imagination; and aesthetic standards and contexts of viewing. Author Diane Waggoner shows that Carroll's photographs of children were as important to him as his literature in modelling the concept and appeal of Victorian childhood. Based on over twenty years of scholarship and archival research, the manuscript places Carroll's images within broader Victorian visual and social culture. Waggoner shows how these contexts shaped Carroll's pursuit of a distinctive photographic vocabulary for childhood, and explores how Carroll established new aesthetic norms for images of girls; engaged with evolving definitions of masculinity, education, and boyhood; and pushed the definition of childhood to its outer limits with his use of fancy dress and nude images. Meditating upon Carroll's handling of childhood, time, and loss in both word and photograph, she argues that Carroll's photographs should be understood as powerful contributions to the nineteenth century's visual representation of the emergent definition of childhood"--
