The parabolic story was set as an example of how God will help the righteous. Judith's heroic action not only became a validating charter myth of Judaism itself but has also been appropriated by many Christian and secular groupings, and has been an inspiration for numerous literary texts and works of art. It continues to exercise its power over artists, authors and academics and is becoming a major field of research in its own right. The Sword of Judith is the first multidisciplinary collection of essays to discuss representations of Judith throughout the centuries.     Review, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi's works, volume III -- Review, Proceedings of the estates assembly of the kingdom of Württemberg, 1815-1816 (33 sections) -- Appendix : excerpts from letters by Hege, Jacobi, and Jean Paul concerning Hegel's review of Jacobi's works. This work brings together, for the first time in English translation, Hegel's journal publications from his years in Heidelberg (1816-18), writings which have been previously either untranslated or only partially translated into English. The Heidelberg years marked Hegel's return to university teaching and represented an important transition in his life and thought. The translated texts include his important reassessment of the works of the philosopher F.H. Jacobi, whose engagement with Spinozism, especially, was of decisive significance for the philosophical development of German Idealism. They also include his most influential writing about contemporary political events, his essay on the constitutional assembly in his native Württemberg, which was written against the background of the dramatic political and social changes occurring in post-Napoleonic Germany. The translators have provided an introduction and notes that offer a scholarly commentary on the philosophical and political background of Hegel's Heidelberg writings

    Das Aprilheft wird von einem großen Schwerpunkt zum Thema "Gefährdung der Demokratie" dominiert. Es schreiben darin die Politikwissenschaftler Jan-Werner Müller (aus bekanntem An-lass) über die Notwendigkeit guter Verlierer im demokratischen Wettstreit und Herfried Münkler über die Herausforderungen der liberalen Demokratie durch "Populismus, Demokratismus und Cäsarismus". Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier ist mit einem Essay vertreten, der die Belastungen der Demokratie durch die Corona-Pandemie in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Die Pandemie spielt ebenfalls in den Überlegungen des Staatsrechtlers Florian Meinel zum Verhältnis von "Par-lament und Regierung im notstandsverwalteten Deutschland" eine Rolle. In den Marginalien er-klärt Christoph Türcke, warum die ergriffenen Maßnahmen auch aus der Perspektive kritischer Theorie angemessen und demokratiekonform sind. Als Übernahme aus der New York Review of Books veröffentlichen wir die deutsche Übersetzung von Jackson Lears' sehr kritischer Analyse des jüngsten Buchs von Anne Applebaum, Die Verlockung des Autoritären. Außerdem: Paola Lopez erklärt in einem Essay, warum die algorithmisch erzeugten Ergebnisse Künstlicher Intelligenz nicht weniger diskriminierend sind als die Strukturen, in denen die Algo-rithmen programmiert werden. Im Kritikteil stellt Benedikt Wintgens (Träger des Merkur-Preises für Dissertationen 2020 und des Wissenschaftspreises 2021 des Deutschen Bundestags) das pos-tum erschienene Opus magnum des Historikers Axel Schildt vor, seine Geschichte der Medien-Intellektuellen in der Bundesrepublik. Mit neuerdings wieder laut werdenden Vorwürfen des "Mo-ralismus" (etwa gegen die Klimaschutzbewegung) setzt sich Oliver Weber auseinander – und zwar im Rückgriff auf Hermann Lübbes 1987 erstmals erschienenes, nun neu aufgelegtes Buch Politi-scher Moralismus. Um ganz andere Dinge, existentielle Not nämlich, geht es in Hans Dieter Schä-fers Mails aus der Notaufnahme (nicht wegen Corona).     Im Zentrum von Ulrich Gutmairs Essay "Kebabträume in der Mauerstadt" steht Gabi Delgado-López, der unlängst verstorbene Sänger der Band DAF – in Wahrheit geht es aber um den Zusam-menhang von "Gastarbeitern" und Popkultur und um das Mauer-Berlin der achtziger Jahre. Rengenier C. Rittersma ist Historiker und begibt sich auf eine Forschungsreise in deutsche Archive, es geht um Trüffel. In seinem Essay schreibt er über die Archive, sehr viel mehr aber über die hindernisreiche Reise, die er mit einem von seiner Kommune zur Verfügung gestellten E-Auto unternahm. Daniel Kehlmann hat gerade ein Buch über die literarische Minderbegabung Künstlicher Intelligenz veröffentlicht – Hannes Bajohr erklärt, warum Kehlmann seine Fragen so stellt, dass die Ergebnisse kaum spannend sein können. In einem weiteren Beitrag setzt sich auch Simon Roloff mit den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen digitaler Literatur auseinander. Die indische Schriftstellerin Sumana Roy hat absolut nichts gegen postkoloniale Theorie in der Literaturwissenschaft, sehr wohl aber etwas dagegen, dass Literatur, die dazu nicht passt, in den Hintergrund rückt. In seiner Sinneskolumne beschäftigt sich Bodo Mrozek mit der Frage, was die Pandemie für unsere Sinneswahrnehmung bedeutet. Philipp Oswalt nimmt sich in seiner Architekturkolumne die Frankfurter Paulskirche vor und fragt sich, ob dieser Erinnerungsort tatsächlich einer geschichtspolitischen Revision bedarf. Viel war in den letzten Jahren von Wutbürgern die Rede: Sighard Neckel geht einer etwas, aber nicht grundsätzlich anders gelagerten Emotion nach: dem Groll. Wolfgang Fach verfolgt Pandemie-Politiken in Gegenwart und, mehr noch, Vergangenheit. Der Arzt Michael de Ridder und der Anwalt Wolfgang Putz haben vor dem Bundesverfassungsgericht erfolgreich gegen den Suizidbeihilfe-Paragrafen 217 geklagt. In ihrem Beitrag legen sie ihre Argumente und Beweggründe dar. He generally connotes the heroic past of the (more imagined than real) ancient Israelite empire and is associated with messianic hopes for the future. Nevertheless, his richly ambivalent and fascinating literary portrayal in the Hebrew Bible is one of the most complex of all biblical characters. This volume aims at taking a new, critical look at the process of biblical creation and subsequent exegetical transformation of the character of David and his attributed literary composition (the Psalms), with particular emphasis put on the multilateral fertilization and cross-cultural interchanges among Jews, Christians and Muslims

In a unique dual analysis, the book highlights how empire is not only part of the past but also of a present colonial heritage. The book first outlines postcolonial criticism and discusses the challenges it poses for biblical scholarship, then scrutinizes the complex ways with which nineteenth-century commentaries on Mark's Gospel interplayed with the formation of European colonial identities. It examines the stance of Mark's Gospel vis-à-vis the Roman Empire and analyzes the manner in which the fibers of empire within Mark are interwoven, reproduced, negotiated, modified and subverted. Finally, it offers synthesizing suggestions for bringing Mark beyond a colonial heritage. The book's candid use of postcolonial criticism illustrates how a contemporary perspective can illuminate and shed new light on an ancient text in its imperial setting. (from the publisher)

    Philosophy and rhetoric are both old enemies and old friends. In The Rhetorical Sense of Philosophy, Donald Phillip Verene sets out to shift our understanding of the relationship between philosophy and rhetoric from that of separation to one of close association. He outlines how ancient rhetors focused on the impact of language regardless of truth, ancient philosophers utilized language to test truth; and ultimately, this separation of right reasoning from rhetoric has remained intact throughout history. It is time, Verene argues, to reassess this ancient and misunderstood relationship. Verene traces his argument utilizing the writing of ancient and modern authors from Plato and Aristotle to Descartes and Kant; he also explores the quarrel between philosophy and poetry, as well as the nature of speculative philosophy. Verene's argument culminates in a unique analysis of the frontispiece as a rhetorical device in the works of Hobbes, Vico, and Rousseau. Verene bridges the stubborn gap between these two fields, arguing that rhetorical speech both brings philosophical speech into existence and allows it to endure and be understood. The Rhetorical Sense of Philosophy depicts the inevitable intersection between philosophy and rhetoric, powerfully illuminating how a rhetorical sense of philosophy is an attitude of mind that does not separate philosophy from its own use of language

In Spaces of Feeling, Marta Figlerowicz examines modernist novels and poems that treat this possibility as electrifying, but also deeply disturbing. Their characters and lyric speakers are undone, Figlerowicz posits, by the realization that they depend on others to solve their inward affective conundrums-and that, to these other people, their feelings often do not seem mysterious at all.Spaces of Feeling features close readings of works by Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, John Ashbery, Ralph Ellison, Marcel Proust, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, and Wallace Stevens. Figlerowicz points out that these poets and novelists often place their protagonists in domestic spaces-such as bedrooms, living rooms, and basements-in which their cognitive dependence on other characters inhabiting these spaces becomes clear. Figlerowicz highlights the diversity of aesthetic and sociopolitical contexts in which these affective dependencies become central to these authors' representations of selfhood. By setting these novels and poems in conversation with the work of contemporary theorists, she illuminates pressing and unanswered questions about subjectivity

    "The essays in Bible Trouble all engage queer theories for purposes of biblical interpretation, a rare effort to date within biblical scholarship. The title phrase 'Bible Trouble' plays on Judith Butler's 'Gender Trouble', gesturing toward a primary text for contemporary queer theory. The essays consider, among others, the Lazarus story, the Ethiopian eunuch, 'gender trouble' in Judges 4 and 5, the Song of Songs, and an unorthodox coupling of the books of Samuel and the film Paris Is Burning. This volume 'troubles' not only the boundaries between biblical scholarship and queer theory but also the boundaries between different frameworks currently used in the analysis of biblical literature, including sexuality, gender, race, class, history, and literature.     The linguistic difference between the Deuteronomistic History and the book of Chronicles --The scribes of ancient Israel in their oral world --Multiformity in the Deuteronomistic History and the book of Chronicles --Multiformity and the Synoptic passages --Multiformity and the nonsynoptic passages. This volume reexamines and reconstructs the relationship between the Deuteronomistic History and the book of Chronicles, building on recent developments such as the Persian -period dating of the Deuteronomistic History, the contribution of oral traditional studies to understanding the production of biblical texts, and the reassessment of Standard Biblical Hebrew and Late Biblical Hebrew. These new perspectives challenge widely held understandings of the relationship between the two scribal works and strongly suggest that they were competing historiographies during the Persian period that nevertheless descended from a common source. This new reconstruction leads to new readings of the literature
