This study examines the gendered effects of early and sustained exposure to high-performing peers on female educational trajectories. Exploiting random allocation to classrooms within middle schools, we measure the effect of male and female high performers on girls' high school placement outcomes. We disentangle two channels through which peers of either sex can play a role: academic performance and school preferences. We also focus on the effects of peers along the distribution of baseline academic performance. Exposure to good peers of either sex reduces the degree to which high-achieving girls seek placement in more-selective schools. High-achieving boys have particularly strong, negative effects on high-performing girls' admission scores and preferences for more-selective schools. By contrast, high-achieving girls improve low-performing girls' placement outcomes, but exclusively through a positive effect on exam scores.

We study spatio-temporal variation of peer effects in rooftop photovoltaics adoption of households. Our investigation employs locational data on potential adopters and a geocoded data set of all grid-connected photovoltaic systems set up in Germany through 2010. The detailed locational data allows us to construct an individual measure of peer effects for each potential adopter across Germany. Based on a discrete choice model with panel data, our analysis reveals that peer effects are mostly localized within a range of 0-0.2 km. Within this range they deflate slowly in a non-linear manner. We also find that the peer effect decreases over time.

This paper studies the effect of multigrading-mixing children of different ages in the same classroom-on students' short- versus long-term academic achievement in Italy. We cope with the endogeneity of multigrading (and class size) through an instrumental variable identification strategy based on a law that disciplines class composition. By relying on longitudinal data that follow a cohort of Italian students over their compulsory school career, we show that multigrading has a positive short-term effect on achievements. This effect fades away over time to become negative in the long run if students spend several years in a multigrade class. The analysis of mechanisms points to the fundamental role of teachers and suggests that no negative long-term effect arises when multigrade classes are taught by more experienced and motivated teachers. These results reconcile contrasting findings in the literature based on cross-sectional data and a short-term focus.

Using longitudinal data from the Italian National Institute for the Evaluation of the Education System (INVALSI), this paper investigates whether the ability of classmates affects the educational attainment of immigrant students. We focus not only on the average quality of peers in the class, but we further investigate which part of the ability distribution of peers drives the effect, by assessing the role played by the extreme tails of the ability distribution. Our empirical strategy addresses students' endogenous sorting into classes by exploiting the within-student across-subjects variation in achievements and the simultaneity problem by using predetermined measures of peers' ability. We show that peers' ability matters. While native students are mostly influenced by the average quality of their peers, immigrant children are detrimentally affected by the fraction of very low achievers in the classroom. Our findings provide valuable guidance to policymakers concerning the allocation of students to classes in order to foster immigrant students' integration and learning.

In this thesis, I study an increasingly-common feature of modern labor markets: the decentralization of workers away from firms and towards independent labor provision. I provide new insights into the type of labor-market organization behind the gig-economy, freelancing, and independent contracting, looking at how these flexible workers search for and complete jobs, and how they interact with each other in team settings. The first chapter, Freelancing and the Value of Flexible Work provides new information on how these flexible workers search for, select, and complete jobs, and quantifies the value that freelancers gain from being able to choose their hours flexibly. The chapter is motivated by a new empirical observation: freelancers have large week-to-week variation in the hours that they work, even when working on the same project for many months. To explain this high-frequency variation in hours-worked, I develop a structural model of freelancing, built around a particular type of work arrangement unique to freelancers – a job is a fixed quantity of work, and the freelancer chooses an optimal time-horizon and hours-schedule over which to complete the work. The choice of hours can vary from week to week, in response to unpredictable shocks to the disutility of work. The model is estimated using earning data for a panel of New Zealand freelancers. I then use an estimated version of the model to quantify the trade-offs that freelancers face, including which jobs to accept and which to reject, and how to optimally complete tasks. I show that freelancers value the flexibility of shorter-term jobs versus the stability of longer-term jobs. I also conduct welfare analysis, comparing the ‘flexible work schedule’ freelancing model to a ‘fixed-hours’ baseline. I show that freelance workers would require an 8.5 percent increase in compensation to complete their jobs under a fixed-hours schedule, on average, and that if they know their shocks ex-ante and could adjust their hours, they would require 62.2 percent higher compensation to complete their jobs under a fixed-hours schedule. I show the value of flexibility varies across age cohorts in a manner consistent with fertility decisions, and across industries in predictable and sensible ways. I document a subset of freelancers termed ‘Flex-or-Quit’ workers, whose value placed on flexibility is so high that they would be unwilling to take on a traditional job with a fixed-hours work schedule. In the second chapter, Five Facts about Task-Based Work I present a series of new facts about this modern type of decentralized work, using a detailed and comprehensive administrative dataset of earnings for ‘task-based workers’ in New Zealand. I establish the following facts: (1) task-based workers often hold multiple simultaneous jobs, and engage in significant on-the-job search; (2) task-based jobs can be characterized as ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ jobs for workers, along the dimensions of wages and job length; (3) task-based workers optimally allocate their time across these types of jobs, often in counter-intuitive ways; (4) there is an upward-sloping relationship between acceptable wages and acceptable job length; and (5) there is considerable within-worker variability in wages from period to period, which reflects both supply-side and demand-side factors. I also document a range of important descriptive statistics on task-based work, including calculating transition probabilities, steady-state unemployment rates, and marginal distributions of acceptable wages. These empirical findings provide useful guidance for models of labor-market search and job holding, particularly in the gig-work and freelancing sectors. The third chapter, Peer Effects in Expert Decision-Making studies a particular outcome of decentralized labor: the formation of teams of independent experts. In the paper, I study how these experts can have spill-overs effects on their peers’ decision-making. The chapter uses data on Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire crews to estimate the effect of an expert’s peer network on decision-making. I quantify decision-making by using the quality of strike / ball calls made by home-plate umpires. I then empirically analyze the extent to which an umpire paired to work with high-quality peers experiences an improvement in decision-quality. MLB umpire data has two advantages that make this analysis possible: 1) umpires are assigned to a crew each season / game in a way that is independent of decision-making quality, and have significant churn within these crews; and 2) decisions can be uniquely attributed to a single umpire, and are able to be quantified in a detailed way. Using data on these umpires, I show that a one-standard deviation improvement in the decision-making quality of an umpire’s peer network raises their own decision-making quality by around 0.03-0.1 standard deviations. The peer-effects results are particularly strong when looking only at decisions which require large amounts of expert judgment (close calls). Experience is a key driver of the peer effect, with more-experienced umpires having smaller peer effects than less- experienced umpires. I also show that there is some persistence to these peer effects, and that peer effects have an intensive margin, with experts gaining more from very-high-quality networks. Then I consider expert decisions in a Bayesian framework, and show that decision-making spill-over can be characterized in terms of two types of accuracy: bias and precision. I then demonstrate that both types of accuracy transmit through peer networks.

We use admission lotteries for higher education studies in the Netherlands to investigate whether someone's field of study influences the study choices of their younger peers. We find that younger siblings and cousins are strongly affected. Also younger neighbors are affected but to a smaller extent. These findings indicate that a substantial part of the correlations in study choices between family members can be attributed to spillover effects and are not due to shared environments. Our findings contrast with those of recent studies based on admission thresholds, which find no sibling spillovers on field of study (major) choices. Because we also find spillovers from lottery participants at the lower end of the ability distribution, the contrasting findings cannot be attributed to the different research designs (leveraging admission lotteries versus admission thresholds). We believe that the different findings are due to the small differences in quality between universities in the Netherlands, making differences in the prestige of fields of study more prominent.

This article relies on a large-scale field experiment in Mexico to measure the effects of two ability-grouping models (tracking and heterogeneous/bimodal groups) on student learning outcomes during middle school. Both strategies yielded an average learning gain of 0.08 of a standard deviation. We find l arger a nd m ore p ersistent effects among initially high-achieving students and no significant effects among low achievers. Students in top tracking enjoyed multiple advantages, particularly a concentration of high-performing peers and a very homogeneous classroom, that facilitated the teacher's work and increased students' effort l evels. Bimodal classes fostered greater effort levels among top students, while teachers induced less competition and allocated more time to practice and feedback activities, to the detriment of lecture time. Our results support the allocation of students to homogeneous classes to maximize performance gains among top students without hurting low achievers. Fostering inclusive learning among weaker students would require complementary investments under both models.

We exploit the randomized evaluation of a remedying education intervention that improved the reading skills of low-performing third grade students in Colombia, to study whether providing educational support to low-achieving students affects the academic performance of their higher-achieving classmates. We find that the test scores of non-treated children in treatment schools increased by 0.108 of a standard deviation compared to similar children in control schools. We interpret the reduced-form effect on higher-achieving students as a spillover effect within treated schools. We then estimate a linear-in-means model of peer effects, finding that a one-standard-deviation increase in peers' contemporaneous achievement increases individual test scores by 0.679 of a standard deviation. We rule out alternative explanations coming from a reduction in class size. We explore several mechanisms, including teachers' effort, students' misbehavior, and peer-to-peer interactions. Our findings show that policies aimed at improving the bottom of the achievement distribution have the potential to generate social-multiplier effects that benefit all.
