The main focus of the commentary on book 24 of the Iliad is the interpretation of one of the most exciting and moving scenes in the epic: how the Trojan King, Priam, makes his way to his deadly enemy Achilles, at whose hands his son Hector had died; how the god Hermes guides him almost mystically into the Greek camp; how Achilles, at the end of an emotional encounter, invites Priam to dine with him and hands over Hector's body for burial.

George Chapman's translations of Homer--immortalized by Keats's sonnet-- are the most famous in the English language. Swinburne praised their "romantic and sometimes barbaric grandeur," their "freshness, strength, and inextinguishable fire." And the great critic George Saintsbury wrote, "For more than two centuries they were the resort of all who, unable to read Greek, wished to know what the Greek was. Chapman is far nearer Homer than any modern translator in any modern language." This volume presents the original text of Chapman's translation of the Homeric hymns. The hymns, believed to have been written not by Homer himself but by followers who emulated his style, are poems written to the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek pantheon. The collection, originally titled by Chapman "The Crowne of all Homers Workes," also includes epigrams and poems attributed to Homer and known as "The Lesser Homerica," as well as his famous "The Battle of Frogs and Mice."

Lucan's great poem, Pharsalia, recounts events surrounding the decisive battle fought near Pharsalus in 48 B.C. during the civil war between the forces of Pompey and Julius Caesar. Though the subject of this unfinished masterpiece is historical, many of its features are characteristic of epic poetry: Rousing battle scenes; tales of witches, monsters, and miracle; detailed catalogues; intricate similes; and speeches with a high degree of rhetorical elegance. However, Lucan's deft mix of humor and horror, of political satire, literary parody, history, and epic is entirely his own.Jane Wilson Joyce's superb translation conveys the drama and poetry of the original. Her use of natural English rhythms in a loose six-beat line comes close to matching the original Latin hexameters, wile her language preserves Lucan's sequence of images. An enlightening introduction, notes, and a full glossary augment the translation.

Ein deutschsprachiger wissenschaftlicher Gesamtkommentar zu Homers Ilias ist seit dem Kommentar von Ameis-Hentze-Cauer (1868-1913) nicht mehr erschienen. In der Zwischenzeit hat die Homer-Forschung auf sämtlichen traditionellen Teilgebieten (Sprache, Realien, Struktur usw.) erhebliche Fortschritte gemacht. Darüber hinaus sind grundsätzlich bekannte Bereiche wie z. B. die Erzählforschung auf eine systematische Grundlage gestellt worden. Schließlich sind mit Mykenologie (Linear B) und Oral-poetry- sowie Troia-Forschung gänzlich neue Möglichkeiten der Texterschließung hinzugekommen. Ausgehend von der Basis des alten Ameis-Hentze-Cauer spiegelt der Kommentar den gegenwärtigen Kenntnisstand der Homerforschung in umfassender Breite wider. Der „Basler Kommentar“ zur Ilias wird von der Fachwelt als neues Grundlagenwerk weltweit stark beachtet. Ein inhaltlich und formal neuartiges Konzept kommt den Bedürfnissen unterschiedlicher Benutzergruppen entgegen. Adressaten sind Studierende und Dozenten an Universität und Schule, nicht nur der Altertumswissenschaften, sondern allgemein der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften. Vom ursprünglichen Plan, Gesang für Gesang vorzugehen, wurde Abstand genommen. Um den gegenwärtigen Präferenzen in der Schul- und Universitätslandschaft entgegenzukommen, sollen sechs vielgelesene Homer-Gesänge bis spätestens zum Jahr 2009 verfügbar sein, und zwar die Gesänge 3 (Mauerschau, Waffenstillstandsvertrag, Zweikampf Menelaos-Paris), 6 (Diomedes-Glaukos-Episode, Hektor in Troia), 9 (Bittgesandtschaft zum grollenden Achilleus), 19 (Achills Absage an seinen Groll und Rückkehr in die Heeresgemeinschaft), 22 (Hektors Tod) und 24 (Freigabe von Hektors Leichnam an Priamos durch Achill).

George Chapman's translations of Homer--immortalized by Keats's sonnet-- are the most famous in the English language. Swinburne praised their "romantic and sometimes barbaric grandeur," their "freshness, strength, and inextinguishable fire." And the great critic George Saintsbury wrote, "For more than two centuries they were the resort of all who, unable to read Greek, wished to know what the Greek was. Chapman is far nearer Homer than any modern translator in any modern language." This volume presents the original text of Chapman's translation of the Homeric hymns. The hymns, believed to have been written not by Homer himself but by followers who emulated his style, are poems written to the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek pantheon. The collection, originally titled by Chapman "The Crowne of all Homers Workes," also includes epigrams and poems attributed to Homer and known as "The Lesser Homerica," as well as his famous "The Battle of Frogs and Mice.
