We formalize "degrees of fungibility" by differentiating goods according to both their underlying attributes and the perceived value and/or usefulness of those attributes to a value assessor. This allows us to distinguish between goods that appear to be "exactly the same" from those goods that appear to be "nearly the same". Such a distinction is of particular importance in the design space of digital goods, which may exist both natively in the digital space and as surrogates, i.e. as digital representations of physical goods. We provide motivating examples where digital objects are too fungible for certain desired uses, and proceed to develop a formal framework under which degrees of fungibility can be defined and characterized. We close by bridging this framework to applications in machine learning and market design.

Exploring Markets" is a paper series discussing niche markets with interesting characteristics. The paper on hand focuses on the market for Non-Fungible Token (NFT) which are transferrable rights of ownership to unique digital assets. NFTs are based on blockchain technology and are traded with cryptocurrencies primarily on specialized marketplaces. In 2021 record breaking auctions of expensive NFTs got mainstream attention, whereas a decreasing trade volume at the start of 2022 might indicate challenges in market adoption for this new technology. The paper discusses specific characteristics of NFTs, use cases and associated problems.

We explain the mechanics of smart contracts. We then highlight benefits of smart contracts such as overcoming commitment problems. We also discuss limitations such as the difficulty for smart contracts to access information external to the blockchain and the difficulty of integrating smart contract code with traditional legal enforcement. We further highlight how the absence of a trusted intermediary inflates implementation costs for blockchain applications. We conclude with a discussion of the most prominent smart contract applications in Decentralized Finance (DeFi): token issuance (e.g., ICOs, NFTs), decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and protocols for loanable funds (PLFs). Our survey covers both institutional details and relevant literature
