What should we consider when thinking about the relationship between an onstage performance and the story the performance tells? 'A Poetics of Handel's Operas' explores this question by analysing the narratives of Handel's operas in relation to the rich representational fabric of performance used to convey them. Nathan Link notes that in most storytelling genres, the audience can naturally discern between a story and the way that story is represented: with film, for example, the viewer would recognise that a character hears neither her own voiceover nor the ambient music that accompanies it, whereas in discussions of opera, some audiences may be distracted by the seemingly artificial nature of such conventions as characters singing their dialogue

Indigenous Audibilities follows the social relations that created collections of Indigenous music in four case studies linking the U.S., Mexico, Nicaragua, and Chile. Author Amanda Minks brings together vivid storytelling and theories of collection, voice, and recording to challenge the transparency of archives as a historical source. She presents a social-historical method of listening, reading, and thinking beyond the referentiality of archived texts, and in the process uncovers neglected genealogies of cultural music research in the Americas

This volume explores how medieval song expressed relationships between people and their environments. Integrating musicology with literary studies, ecocriticism, and environmental history, author Jennifer Saltzstein compares the nature imagery that pervades the songs of the trouvères of northern France to the physical terrain and climate of the lands on which their authors lived. Through close readings of music-text relationships, she reveals how for many medieval songwriters, identity was tied to place and configured through attachment to specific landscapes
