"From the author of the international bestseller Before the Coffee Gets Cold, this book follows four new customers who hope to travel back in time in a little Japanese café. In a back alley in Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee--the chance to travel back in time. With faces both familiar and new, Tales from the Cafe follows the story of four patrons who visit to take advantage of café Funiculi Funicula's time-traveling offer and revisit moments with family, friends and lovers. Each one must face up to the past to move on with their lives. Kawaguchi's wistful and heartwarming new novel once again invites the reader to ask themselves, "What would you do if you could travel back in time?""--

"December 15, 1965, Alabama, the fateful night that triggers an avalanche of events that turn newly engaged couple Melvin and Bernadette into fugitives. A pitstop in the wrong part of town ends with blood on their hands. Suspecting that cops are already following them, Melvin realizes the only way they'll survive is if they flee the country. Bernadette, who's hiding a secret from her fiancé, reluctantly agrees. With a persistent FBI agent on their trail, they travel to Ghana to seek the help of Melvin's old college friend, who happens to be Kwame Nkrumah, the country's embattled president. The couple's chance encounter with Ghana's most beloved Highlife musician, Kwesi, who's headed to play for the president, sparks a journey full of suspense, lust, magic, and danger as Nkrumah's regime crumbles around them. Traveling with Kwesi seems to be the perfect cover for the couple to go undetected. But Kwesi and Bernadette's undeniable attraction builds during their three-day trek, as does Melvin's staunch jealousy and erratic behavior. What was meant to be a fresh start quickly threatens both their relationship and their freedom. With the rogue FBI agent on their heels, Melvin, Bernadette, and Kwesi must confront each other and their secrets, setting off a series of cataclysmic events"--

This anthology adds a mysterious, metaphysical element to material based on the author's experiences in the tropics of northeast Argentina

This is Nadia. She is fiercely independent with an excellent sense of humour and a love of smoking alone on her balcony late at night. This is Saeed. He is sweet and shy and kind to strangers. He also has a balcony but he uses his for star-gazing. This is their story: a love story, but also a story about how we live now and how we might live tomorrow. Saeed and Nadia are falling in love, and their city is falling apart. Here is a world in crisis and two human beings travelling through it. Exit West is a heartfelt and radical act of hope - a novel to restore your faith in humanity and in the power of imagination

1986: The teenage daughter of a wealthy Vietnamese family gets lost in an abandoned rubber plantation while fleeing her angry father, and is forever changed by the experience. 2011: Twenty-five years later, a young, unhappy American named Winnie disappears from her new home in Saigon without a trace. The fates of these two women are inescapably linked, bound together by past generations, by ghosts and ancestors, by the history of possessed bodies and possessed lands. Barrelling through the sweaty nightclubs of Saigon to ramshackle zoos, colonial mansions and haunted forests, Violet Kupersmith's heart-pounding fever dream of a novel deftly combines Vietnamese history and folklore to create an immersive, playful, utterly unforgettable debut

"In the early 1900s, a curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town to study faerie folklore, where she discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love. Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on dryadology, the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encylopedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party--much less get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog Shadow, and the Fair Folk to that of friends or lovers. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hransvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: the dashing and insufferably handsome Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of her research, and utterly confound and frustrate Emily. But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart"--

He purakau whakamiharo te pukapuka a Paulo Coelho mo Hanatiako, mo tetahi taitama hepara no Anaruhia e koingo ana ki te haereere ki te kimi i nga kura huna o te ao. Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different - and far more satisfying - than he ever imagined. The Alchemist teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognising opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path. And, most importantly, to follow our dreams. With over 85 million copies sold around the world and translated into more languages than any other book by a living author, The Alchemist has established itself as a modern classic, now brilliantly translated into te reo Maori by Hemi Kelly

"The latest novel in the international bestselling Before the Coffee Gets Cold Series, following four new customers in a little Tokyo café where customers can travel back in time. In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Tales from the Cafe comes another story of four new customers, each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Café Funiculi Funicula's time-traveling offer. Along with some familiar faces from Kawaguchi's previous novels, readers will also be introduced to a daughter, a comedian, a sister and a lover, each with something they wish they had said differently. With his signature heartwarming characters and immersive storytelling, Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?"--

"He's a trickster, a player, a jester. His handshake's like a pact with the devil, his smile like a crack in the clouds; he's watching you now and he's gone when you turn. Tyll Ulenspiegel is here! In a village like every other village in Germany, a scrawny boy balances on a rope between two trees. He's practising. He practises by the mill, by the blacksmiths; he practises in the forest at night, where the Cold Woman whispers and goblins roam. When he comes out, he will never be the same. Tyll will escape the ordinary villages. In the mines he will defy death. On the battlefield he will run faster than cannonballs. In the courts he will trick the heads of state. As a travelling entertainer, his journey will take him across the land and into the heart of a never-ending war. A prince's doomed acceptance of the Bohemian throne has European armies lurching brutally for dominion and now the Winter King casts a sunless pall. Between the quests of fat counts, witch-hunters and scheming queens, Tyll dances his mocking fugue; exposing the folly of kings and the wisdom of fools. With macabre humour and moving humanity, Daniel Kehlmann lifts this legend from medieval German folklore and enters him on the stage of the Thirty Years' War. When citizens become the playthings of politics and puppetry, Tyll, in his demonic grace and his thirst for freedom, is the very spirit of rebellion - a cork in water, a laugh in the dark, a hero for all time."--Provided by publisher

"Victoriana is a country ruled by an Emperor-for-Life who is dying from an illness not officially acknowledged in a land where truth and facts are decided by the Emperor. The elite goes along with the charade. Their children are conditioned to conform. It is a land of truthful lies, where reality has uncertain meaning. Mumbi, a rebellious child from the capital of Westville, and her brother are sent to live in rural Hippoland. But what was meant to be a punishment turns out to be a glorious discovery of the magic of the land, best captured in the stories their eccentric aunt Sara tells them. Most captivating to the children is the tale of a porcelain bowl supposed to possess healing powers. Returning to Westville as an adult, Mumbi spreads the story throughout the city and to the entire country. Exhausted by years of endless bleak lies, the people are fascinated by the mystery of the porcelain bowl. When word of its healing powers reaches the Emperor himself, he commands Mumbi to find it for him--with dramatic consequences for everyone in Victoriana. Captivating and enchanting, Seasons in Hippoland plays with the tradition of magic realism. Every image in this novel is a story, and every story is a call for resistance to anyone who tries to confine our imagination or corrupt our humanity."--Amazon

"Glimpse is the first anthology of speculative fiction by Black British writers, showcasing a variety of distinctive and exclusive narratives. They include Afrofuturistic, magic realism and transformational stories, glancing into different worlds and new lives. These stories create a dichotomy between the comfortable and the mysterious, tantalizing in their mystique and refreshing in their insight. The contributors include award winning and internationally renowned fiction writers, poets and visual artists."--

An extraordinarily powerful and evocative literary novel set in Iran in the period immediately after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Using the lyrical magic realism style of classical Persian storytelling, Azar draws the reader deep into the heart of a family caught in the maelstrom of post-revolutionary chaos and brutality that sweeps across an ancient land and its people. The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree is really an embodiment of Iranian life in constant oscillation, struggle, and play between four opposing poles: life and death; politics and religion. The sorrow residing in the depths of our joy is the product of a life between these four poles

"For fans of Donna Tartt and Hilary Mantel, a beloved writer returns with a novel inspired by the grand works of the Victorians, but urgent in its concerns about sex, identity and freedom. Fayne Hall sits on high ground overlooking for miles the countryside of the surrounding moor. This is Brontë country, and the Bells have resided on the spot for centuries. As Henry Bell's young (very), rich (very), American (very) wife observes: "Fayne Hall looks to have been built before the flood." Henry Lord Bell is the Seventeenth Earl of the Disputed County of Fayne, disputed because it straddles the border between England and Scotland. Now, as the twentieth century fast approaches, Fayne has fallen on hard times, and the family--Henry and his unmarried sister Clarissa--face destitution. Hence the need for Marie Cochoran's capital, accumulated by her rags-to-riches father on his arrival in the United States during the Irish famine. In addition to the cash, and in return for becoming the great, if disputed, Earl's wife, Marie must provide an heir. Babies are born. All of them girls. All of them dead. And then finally Charles, healthy and strong, arrives. But it is Charles's sister, Charlotte Bell, who serves as the novel's exuberant narrator. Raised by her doting and overprotective father, Charlotte is bright, inquisitive and eager to learn, though she lives under the threat of ill-health, described to her only as her "condition." As such, Charlotte is forbidden to leave Fayne or to receive any visitors from the outside world--until on her twelfth birthday, wonder of wonders, Mr. Margolo, a tutor, appears. Suddenly Charlotte's days are alive with the mystifying new sciences of physics and engineering, and the universes revealed through the lens of a microscope, sparking in her the desire to study at the University of Edinburgh. But just as Charlotte's future appears lit by possibility, Mr. Margolo disappears, abruptly and without explanation, but in circumstances that seem somehow connected to the darkening mystery surrounding the deaths of Charlotte's mother and brother. Fayne boasts all the splendour of the Victorian novels that inspired it--a hugely satisfying plot full of suspenseful twists, tensions born of secrets revealed through unexpected coincidences, and sumptuous descriptions of an all-but-hidden house on a misty moor. Still, the novel is intensely modern in its concerns, exploring the cruel constraints imposed by sex, and the promise of genuine freedom embodied in more fluid conceptions of gender and identity. For some this new novel will be a reminder of, and for others an introduction to, Ann-Marie MacDonald's power to transport, to create fully and richly realized worlds, populated by characters who breathe on the page and live on in the imagination."--

"The Kappa is a creature from Japanese folklore known for dragging unwary toddlers to their deaths in rivers: a scaly, child-sized creature, looking some- thing like a frog, but with a sharp, pointed beak and an oval-shaped saucer on top of its head, which hardens with age. Akutagawa's Kappa is narrated by Patient No. 23, a madman in a lunatic asylum: he recounts how, while out hiking in Kamikochi, he spots a Kappa. He decides to chase it and, like Alice pursuing the White Rabbit, he tumbles down a hole, out of the human world and into the realm of the Kappas. There he is well looked after, in fact almost made a pet of: as a human, he is a novelty. He makes friends and spends his time learning about their world, exploring the seemingly ridiculous ways of the Kappa, but noting many - not always flattering - parallels to Japanese mores regarding morality, legal justice, economics, and sex. Alas, when the patient eventually returns to the human world, he becomes disgusted by humanity and, like Gulliver missing the Houyhnhnms, he begins to pine for his old friends the Kappas, rather as if he has been forced to take leave of Toad of Toad Hall.."--

Perdita Lee may appear to be your average British schoolgirl and Harriet Lee a working mother trying to penetrate the school social hierarchy, but there are signs that they might not be as normal as they think they are. For one thing, they share a gold-painted, seventh-floor flat with some surprisingly verbal vegetation. And then there's the gingerbread they make. Londoners may find themselves able to take or leave it, but it's very popular in Druhástrana, the far-away (and according to Wikipedia, non-existent) land of Harriet Lee's early youth. In fact, the world's truest lover of the Lee family gingerbread is Harriet's charismatic childhood friend, Gretel Kercheval, a figure who seems to have had a hand in everything that has happened to Harriet since they met. Decades later, when teenaged Perdita sets out to find her mother's long-lost friend, it prompts a new telling of Harriet's story. As the book follows the Lees through encounters with jealousy, ambition, family grudges, work, wealth and real estate, gingerbread seems to be the one thing that reliably holds a constant value
