    Denis Donoghue does not go in search of a fight. He is, among critics, notable for his tact and genial temperament. But by setting aside his own bearing in favor of the bearing of his object, he produces an artifact that rebukes certain competing reports. And thus it is with his consideration of Modernism in the present selection of essays, wherein he makes quick work of the conventional claim that in Modernism an event, or a cause whose consequences can be enumerated, is in evidence. Instead, Donoghue declares Modernism "a stance, an attitude, a choice," further asserting that "it is not necessary to be modern." Nor is it necessary for a critic to be dogmatic or to make theoretical hauteur his game. It is in his rejection of the allure of dogmatism that Donoghue discovers the difficulty of the task before him; for to make any headway, he must take "one meaning of Modernism and .. put up with the embarrassment of knowing that a different account of it would be just as feasible." But in testing his "one meaning" against writers as various as Wordsworth, Poe, James, Yeats, Joyce, Kafka, Eliot, and Stevens, and against an array of philosophers, theorists, and critics (Blackmur, Benjamin, Trilling, Foucault, Jameson, Levinas, and de Man, to cite certain of these), Donoghue makes himself hospitable to an inventory of modern postures as diverse as the personalities who adopted them, or were adopted by them. The result is a meditation on the self's experience of itself for better or for worse, as the animating force of the Modernist enterprise. Mainly for the better, according to Donoghue, who finds in the mind's self-attentive questionings and strivings an imaginative space of resistance and resonance that is commonly lacking in the beguiling mendacities of modern city life For all his distrust of the potential will to power of "supreme fictions," Donoghue sides with the rebellious angels - but with misgiving. Tender toward "the refusing imagination," he knows that it is susceptible to vanity. What bothers Donoghue is whatever seeks to appropriate a work of literature, bending it to the critic's will, making it serve a political or otherwise ideological cause. What delights Donoghue is the experience of being among words, the ravishments of sense, the inventions of a capacious imagination. The Old Moderns is a book of such pleasures

    In this provocative study of major twentieth century African-American writers and critics, Sandra Adell takes an unprecedented look at the relationship between black literature and criticism and the complex ensemble of Western literature, criticism, and philosophy. Adell's investigation begins with an analysis of the metaphysical foundations of W. E. B. Du Bois's famous formulation of double-consciousness and how black writing bears the traces of such European philosophers as Kant, Hegel, and Marx. She then examines, in the double context of black literature and European philosophy, the writings of such major authors and essayists as Richard Wright, Leopold Senghor, Maya Angelou, Houston A. Baker, Jr., and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Adell gives a thoughtful analysis of the "double bind" created by conflicting claims of Euro- and Afrocentrism in black literature.

    Because literature is a repository of both a society's ideologies and its psychological conflicts, it has the capacity to reveal aspects of a culture's collective psyche: the ways in which ideological investments reveal the nature of individuals' psychological relationship to the world. While it is reasonable to assume that our national literature would offer a fertile field in which to explore the interaction between the ideological and psychological dimensions of American life, critics generally have kept these two domains separate, and the dominant model has consisted of an archaic notion of the individual in society. The two are seen as interactive but essentially discrete entities, often in polarized opposition in which the autonomous individual is a victim of an antagonistic American society Lois Tyson's ground-breaking work, Psychological Politics of the American Dream, seeks to draw together these disparate spheres by applying a new dialectical model of existential subjectivity to five representative works of twentieth-century American literature: Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, and Joseph Heller's Something Happened While previous literary analyses frequently portray the individuals in these works in opposition to society, Tyson ably demonstrates that the texts instead reveal the intersection of psyche - or the self as a product of individual psychological experience - and the socius - or the self as social product - in the American dream, which through its inherent relation to commodification responds to our desire to escape existential inwardness: that anxious awareness of ourselves as creatures, in Heidegger's words, whose "very being is at issue" in an uncertain world. These five works illustrate the diversity and complexity of the psychological realities American literature can reveal, given a model of subjectivity adequate to the task. Taken together, they point to a growing collusion of psyche and socius: the desire to escape existential inwardness becomes an increasingly "viable" project with the increasing commodification of American national culture

    Both a work of rigorous scholarship and a passionate challenge to today's left, Renewing the Left lucidly argues for a reassessment of the legacy of the New York intellectuals as a basis for transforming both the academy and American politics in general. Teres brings fresh thought to such crucial matters as race relations, Jews and blacks, gender troubles on the left, political correctness, values, literary quality, and politics as a means to fulfill personal, spiritual, and ethical needs. Teres deals with all of these matters as he illuminates the legacy of New York's leading intellectuals, beginning with the founding of the influential Partisan Review during the 1930s He looks first at William Phillips and Philip Rahv, the chief editors of Partisan Review, and shows how they laid the groundwork for a revitalized Marxist criticism - one that rejected dogmatism and narrow materialism, and stressed instead the importance of literary criticism itself and the freedom of the intellectual. Teres carries the discussion into the 1940s, when such critics as Rahv, Lionel Trilling, and F. W. Dupee absorbed modernism and elements of Trotsky's analysis of capitalism and culture in order to renew progressive culture and politics. He examines the contributions of such figures as Wallace Stevens (who published a number of important poems in Partisan Review), Dwight Macdonald, Mary McCarthy, Tess Slesinger, Elizabeth Hardwick, Susan Sontag, and James Baldwin. He shows how they mounted a prescient critique of doctrinaire Marxism, with its illiberal habits of the mind, and stressed the essential role of independent and imaginative forms of discourse But Renewing the Left is no paean to radical champions of the past. Teres explores the inability of the New Yorkers to maintain connections to the everyday lives of ordinary people, to keep up with changes in popular culture, to critique American imperialism, to develop balanced assessments of the Beats and the New Left, and to recognize the complexity of African-American culture and experience. Nevertheless, he argues, the New York intellectuals did challenge the left to overcome many of its perennial problems, and this aspect of their project remains immensely valuable for leftist renewal today

    Both a work of rigorous scholarship and a passionate challenge to today's left, Renewing the Left lucidly argues for a reassessment of the legacy of the New York intellectuals as a basis for transforming both the academy and American politics in general. Teres brings fresh thought to such crucial matters as race relations, Jews and blacks, gender troubles on the left, political correctness, values, literary quality, and politics as a means to fulfill personal, spiritual, and ethical needs. Teres deals with all of these matters as he illuminates the legacy of New York's leading intellectuals, beginning with the founding of the influential Partisan Review during the 1930s He looks first at William Phillips and Philip Rahv, the chief editors of Partisan Review, and shows how they laid the groundwork for a revitalized Marxist criticism - one that rejected dogmatism and narrow materialism, and stressed instead the importance of literary criticism itself and the freedom of the intellectual. Teres carries the discussion into the 1940s, when such critics as Rahv, Lionel Trilling, and F. W. Dupee absorbed modernism and elements of Trotsky's analysis of capitalism and culture in order to renew progressive culture and politics. He examines the contributions of such figures as Wallace Stevens (who published a number of important poems in Partisan Review), Dwight Macdonald, Mary McCarthy, Tess Slesinger, Elizabeth Hardwick, Susan Sontag, and James Baldwin. He shows how they mounted a prescient critique of doctrinaire Marxism, with its illiberal habits of the mind, and stressed the essential role of independent and imaginative forms of discourse But Renewing the Left is no paean to radical champions of the past. Teres explores the inability of the New Yorkers to maintain connections to the everyday lives of ordinary people, to keep up with changes in popular culture, to critique American imperialism, to develop balanced assessments of the Beats and the New Left, and to recognize the complexity of African-American culture and experience. Nevertheless, he argues, the New York intellectuals did challenge the left to overcome many of its perennial problems, and this aspect of their project remains immensely valuable for leftist renewal today
