On the night of November 4th 1605, the English authorities uncovered an alleged plot by a group of discontented Catholics to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the lords, princes, queen and king in attendance. The failure of the plot is celebrated to this day and is known as Guy Fawkes Day. In Poets, Players and Preachers, Anne James explores the literary responses to the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in poetry, drama, and sermons. This book is the first full-length study of the literary repercussions of the conspiracy. By analyzing the genres of poems, plays, and sermons produced between 1605 and 1688, the author argues that not only did the continuous reinterpretation of the conspiracy serve religious and political purposes but that such literary reinterpretations produced generic changes.

During and after the Hundred Years War, English rulers struggled with a host of dynastic difficulties, including problems of royal succession, volatile relations with their French cousins, and the consolidation of their colonial ambitions toward the areas of Wales and Scotland. Patricia Ingham brings these precarious historical positions to bear on readings of Arthurian literature in Sovereign Fantasies, a provocative work deeply engaged with postcolonial and gender theory.Ingham argues that late medieval English Arthurian romance has broad cultural ambitions, offering a fantasy of insular union as an "imagined community" of British sovereignty. The Arthurian legends offer a means to explore England's historical indebtedness to and intimacies with Celtic culture, allowing nobles to repudiate their dynastic ties to France and claim themselves heirs to an insular heritage. Yet these traditions also provided a means to critique English conquest, elaborating the problems of centralized sovereignty and the suffering produced by chivalric culture. Texts such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Alliterative Morte Arthure, and Caxton's edition of Malory's Morte Darthur provide what she terms a "sovereign fantasy" for Britain. That is, Arthurian romance offers a cultural means to explore broad political contestations over British identity and heritage while also detailing the poignant complications and losses that belonging to such a community poses to particular regions and subjects. These contestations and complications emerge in exactly those aspects of the tales usually read as fantasy-for example, in the narratives of Arthur's losses, in the prophecies of his return, and in tales that dwell on death, exotic strangeness, uncanny magic, gender, and sexuality.Ingham's study suggests the nuances of the insular identity that is emphasized in this body of literature. Thomas Chatterton's fabrications—or "forgeries"—of historical poems ostensibly written from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries have attracted a great deal of attention and discussion of their authenticity since the eighteenth century. Nevertheless, his works have never before been the subject of a sustained serious and critical investigation that focused on his artistic achievement rather than on the legend and myth surrounding his melodramatic life. Donald Taylor's study provides a thorough analysis of Chatterton's poems and to place them in the context of the poetic and literary traditions that influenced him. Setting his analyses within the contexts of "historic," heroic, satiric, pastoral, and descriptive modes, the author considers each of Chatterton's major works as solutions to the literary problems the poet set for himself, thus tracing the literary history of Chatterton's artistic development as a sequence of subjects and literary modes explored. Elizabeth Helsinger's iconoclastic book explores the peculiar power of rural England to stand for conflicting ideas of Britain. Despite the nostalgic appeal of Constable's or Tennyson's rural scenes, they record the severe social and economic disturbances of the turbulent years after Waterloo. Artists and writers like Cobbett, Clare, Turner, Emily Brontë, and George Eliot competed to claim the English countryside as ideological ground. No image of rural life produced consensus over the great questions: who should constitute the nation, and how should they be represented? Helsinger ponders how some images of rural life and land come to serve as national metaphors while others challenge their constructions of Englishness at the heart of the British Empire.Drawing on recent work in social history, nationalism, and geography, as well as the visual and literary arts, Helsinger recovers other possible and alternative readings of social ties embedded in the imagery of land. She reflects on the power of rural images to transfer local loyalties to the national scene, first popularizing then institutionalizing them. By turning a critical gaze on these scenes, she comments on the difference between art and ideology, and the problems and dangers of asserting any kind of national identity through imagery of the land.Originally published in 1996.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Andrew Escobedo here seeks to provide a new understanding of the emergence of national consciousness in England, showing that many Renaissance writers articulated their Englishness temporally, through an engagement with a history they perceived as lost or alienated. According to Escobedo, the English experienced nationalism as a form of community that disrupted earlier religious and social identities, making it difficult to link the national present to the medieval past. Furthermore, he argues, the English faced the nation's temporal isolation before the Enlightenment narrative of historical progress emerged as a means to interpret novelty in a positive light.Escobedo examines how John Foxe, John Dee, Edmund Spenser, and John Milton used narrative representations of nationhood to mediate what they perceived as a troubling breach in history, attempting to bring together the English past, present, and near future in a complete and continuous story. Yet all four authors also register their concern that historical loss may be an inevitable feature of a "modern" England, and they come to see their narratives as long tapestries that spontaneously rip apart as they grow, obliging the weaver to return to repair them. Focusing on Renaissance England's perplexing sense of its time-boundedness, Escobedo presents early national consciousness as stranded awkwardly between the premodern and modern.

Editionen philosophischer und literarischer Texte haben nicht nur einen wissenschaftlichen Wert, sondern auch eine kulturelle und politische Bedeutung. Sie sind gleichzeitig Ausdruck einer bestimmten historischen Situation. Mit ihrer Entwicklung geht häufig ein editionsphilologischer oder technischer Wandel einher. Die Beiträge stellen Editionsprojekte vom Mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert vor und zeigen deren Wandel und Wirkung. This collection assembles the contributions to an international conference of the "Permanent Research Group on the Editing of Philosophical Works" in conjunction with the Albertus Magnus Institute, which took place in Bonn from 21 to 23 February 2005. Editions of philosophical and literary works are not only of academic value but also of cultural and political significance. At the same time, they are the expression of a given historical situation. Their progress is frequently accompanied by changes of a philological or technical nature. The individual articles discuss editing projects from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and indicate the changes they underwent and the impact they have had.

Ranke und Droysen sowie Fontane in den Texten zum Krieg von 1870/71 assimilieren ihre Darstellungsverfahren an die öffentliche, auf bestimmte mediale Neuerungen gestützte Geschichtskultur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Späte Erzähltexte Fontanes aber zeigen unter Rückgriff auf die zeitgenössische Psychopathologie des Traumas, auf die romantische Poetik der Arabeske und auf ästhetische Elemente der frühen Photographie die Wahrnehmungsgrenzen dieser Geschichtskultur und entwerfen eine neue Textur der Historie. The subject of this volume is historicist practice in the perception of history and the development that superseded it. Both Ranke and Droysen as well as Fontane in his texts on the war of 1870/71 assimilate their descriptive procedures to 19th-century public historical culture, which was based on a number of medial innovations. But by drawing upon the contemporary psychopathology of trauma, the romantic poetics of the arabesque and aesthetic elements in early photography, Fontane's late narratives indicate the limitations of this culture and map out a new texture of historiography.
