    The migration of half a million people from the West of Germany to the East is one of the little-explored areas in the history of the Cold War. This also applies to the field of literature. What such diverse authors as Anna Seghers, Arnolt Bronnen, Heinar Kipphardt, Adolf Endler, Wolf Biermann, Gisela Kraft or Ronald M. Schernikau connected is to have decided on one occasion to live in the GDR. Some of them have found in the socialist country their themes and their audience: often in increasing distance to cultural policy, sometimes in close proximity. Others left the adopted country after a few years disappointed and bitter or were forced out. The contributions in this volume deal with the motives, circumstances, biographical consequences, self-interpretations and literary results of the migration in the Soviet Zone of Occupation and in the GDR from 1945 to 1989. They honor the literary historian Helmut Peitsch on his 65th Birthday

Die Nach-Wende-Autobiographie ist bislang kaum umfassend untersucht und typologisiert worden – eine Lücke, zu deren Schließung dieser Band beiträgt. Die Autorin bietet einen Überblick über die Forschungsgeschichte der literarischen Autobiographie, erhellt die kulturpolitischen Rahmenbedingungen für ostdeutsche Schriftsteller vor und nach 1989 und stellt vor diesem gattungstheoretischen und zeithistorischen Hintergrund vier exemplarisch ausgewählte autobiographische Projekte vor. Analysiert werden, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die gattungskonstituierenden Aspekte der Identität, Authentizität, Historizität und Literarizität, die autobiographischen Werke von Günter de Bruyn, Monika Maron, Wulf Kirsten und Heiner Müller.; The dissertation contributes to the research on post-socialist German autobiographies and analyses representative autobiographical works of Günter de Bruyn, Monika Maron, Wulf Kirsten, and Heiner Müller. A detailed literature review and a short summary of the genre's history provide an introduction to autobiography as a literary genre. The subsequent chapters discuss the change of cultural and educational policies East German writers faced after 1989. An in-depth analysis of the four autobiographical works takes these literary and historical facts into consideration. This analysis explores the variety of opportunities the genre has to offer regarding its main pillars: identity, authenticity, historicity, and literariness.

    The migration of half a million people from the West of Germany to the East is one of the little-explored areas in the history of the Cold War. This also applies to the field of literature. What such diverse authors as Anna Seghers, Arnolt Bronnen, Heinar Kipphardt, Adolf Endler, Wolf Biermann, Gisela Kraft or Ronald M. Schernikau connected is to have decided on one occasion to live in the GDR. Some of them have found in the socialist country their themes and their audience: often in increasing distance to cultural policy, sometimes in close proximity. Others left the adopted country after a few years disappointed and bitter or were forced out. The contributions in this volume deal with the motives, circumstances, biographical consequences, self-interpretations and literary results of the migration in the Soviet Zone of Occupation and in the GDR from 1945 to 1989. They honor the literary historian Helmut Peitsch on his 65th Birthday.
