    In "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" (2011), Leif Randt presents a county that seems to be a perfect representation of a consumerist utopia: located on the shore, CobyCounty is characterized by abundant parties, consumerism and wellbeing. The book, however, is narrated by a young man tormented by the possibility of a coming catastrophe, since his best friend left town, following his mother's advice – a woman that had joined an esoteric religion. If the perfect functioning of this society is very similar to an utopia, the fear of an announced catastrophe brings the work closer to a dystopia. Other than both genders, the narrative does not present any centralizing kind of power – even if consumerism and advertisement are frequently mentioned. In this article, "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" will be presented in the light of utopia and dystopia studies. Its bonds to the present time will be emphasized, mostly the dichotomy between the comfort society produced by the advanced technological development and the necessity to avoid the excesses that produced by the same society in the name of a possible ecological catastrophe, that has been announced by scientists and activists, but that still does not affect people's life directly. ; Em "Schimmernder Dunst über CobyCounty" (2011), Leif Randt apresenta um condado que seria a mais perfeita representação de uma utopia consumista: localizado à beira-mar, CobyCounty é um lugar de festas abundantes, consumo e bem-estar. O livro, contudo, é narrado por um jovem atormentado pela possibilidade de uma catástrofe que se aproxima, desde que seu melhor amigo abandonou a cidade, ouvindo os conselhos da mãe que se afiliou a uma religião esotérica. Se a perfeição do funcionamento dessa sociedade se aproxima muito de uma utopia, o temor de uma catástrofe anunciada aproxima a obra de uma distopia. Deve-se notar, no entanto, que, ao contrário de utopias e distopias, a obra não apresenta uma força centralizadora de poder – mesmo que a menção ao consumismo e às propagandas seja ...

    Was unter dem Begriff Utopie und seinen Derivaten wie Dystopie, Anti-Utopie, Eutopie oder Heterotopie zu verstehen ist, ist Gegenstand einer langen und kontroversen Geschichte. Die Utopie wurde als literarische Gattung bestimmt, die eine alternative und ideale Gesellschaftsform im Modus der Fiktion zur Darstellung bringt, als Staatsroman, als eine Denkform, als eine Hoffnung, als Vorgriff und Apotheose einer totalitär organisierten Gesellschaftsform oder sie umfasst gar die Literatur als Ganze. Dementsprechend lässt sich ein Konsens über den Utopie-Begriff, wie Wilhelm Voßkamp bemerkte, am ehesten "unter negativem Vorzeichen" gewinnen, weshalb die von ihm herausgegebenen drei Bände zur Utopie-Forschung die dem Diskurs 'Utopie' zugeschriebenen Texte in ihren historisch-sozialen Kontexten untersuchten. Im Folgenden soll und kann es denn auch nicht um eine Bestimmung des Begriffs der Utopie selbst gehen, sondern um die Art und Weise, wie Utopien Zeitlichkeit und das heißt insbesondere Zukünftigkeit modellieren.

    Science-Fiction (SF) gilt seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert als dasjenige literarische, filmische und seit den 1960er Jahren zunehmend auch pop-kulturelle Genre, welches wie kaum ein anderes für die fiktionale Ausgestaltung der Zukunft zuständig ist. Und dennoch stand SF lange Zeit in dem Verdacht, eine ästhetisch anspruchslose und tendenziell machistische, wenn nicht offen sexistische, nationalistische und gewaltverherrlichende Unterhaltung für technikbegeisterte weiße Männer mittlerer Bildung und jüngeren Alters zu liefern. Die Literaturwissenschaft hat diese Einschätzung allerdings bereits seit längerem revidiert. So erschienen in den letzten Jahren mehrere Publikationen, die die Bedeutung von SF als "wide-ranging, multivalent and endlessly cross-fertilising cultural idiom" hervorhoben. Vor allem das zunehmende Interesse an den Übergangsregionen von Kunst und Wissen(schaft) hat dem Genre zu neuer kultur-, literatur-, film- und medienwissenschaftlicher Attraktivität verholfen. Dennoch bleibt SF nach wie vor eine genrepoetische und ästhetische Herausforderung, da das Verhältnis zu benachbarten Erzählformen wie Utopie/Dystopie, Horror und Fantasy umstritten ist, die historische Datierung der Gattungsgeschichte ungeklärt bleibt und die grundsätzliche Frage nach der Eigenständigkeit von SF als Genre bis heute Gegenstand kontroverser Auseinandersetzungen ist. Aus pragmatischen Gründen werden diese Themen im Folgenden ausschließlich anhand der 'literarischen' SF diskutiert.

    Race and utopia have been fundamental features of US American culture since the origins of the country. However, racial ideology has often contradicted the ideals of social and political equality in the United States. This book surveys reimaginings of race in major late twentieth-century US American utopian novels from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dorothy Bryant, Marge Piercy, Samuel Delany, Octavia Butler and Kim Stanley Robinson all present radical new configurations of race in a more ideal society, yet continually encounter an ideological blockage as the horizon beyond which we cannot rethink race. Nevertheless, these novels create productive strains of thinking to grapple with the question of race in US American culture.
