This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies »West of Kabul, East of New York«, »Letters from Cairo«, and »Howling in Mesopotamia« makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory

    ‘The Territorialities of U.S. Imperialism(s)’ sets into relation U.S. imperial and Indigenous conceptions of territoriality as articulated in U.S. legal texts and Indigenous life writing in the 19th century. It analyzes the ways in which U.S. legal texts as “legal fictions” narratively press to affirm the United States’ territorial sovereignty and coherence in spite of its reliance on a variety of imperial practices that flexibly disconnect and (re)connect U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction and territory. At the same time, the book acknowledges Indigenous life writing as legal texts in their own right and with full juridical force, which aim to highlight the heterogeneity of U.S. national territory both from their individual perspectives and in conversation with these legal fictions. Through this, the book’s analysis contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the coloniality of U.S. legal fictions, while highlighting territoriality as a key concept in the fashioning of the narrative of U.S. imperialism.

    Since the 19th century indigenous writers have been challenging their missing cultural, political and literary invisibility. Yet, stereotypical misconceptions of “the inferior Indian” continue to exist. This “study of reversal” unfolds an unseen perspective of Native Americans in which they emerge as ethnographers of whiteness and indigeneity. Rereading the autobiographical accounts of Charles A. Eastman, Sarah Winnemucca and Zitkala-Ša results in a framework which allows us to reimagine native culture, while it simultaneously reverses and completes our understanding of white identity. This new approach investigates how these native writers create a counterimage of the “Indian’s White Man,” by creating their own study of “races.” By emerging as scholars of reversal ‘avant la lettre’, their works may additionally be read as testimonies of reconciliation.

    Since its first official mentioning in 1943, autism spectrum disorder has proven to be a much-discussed yet seemingly unfathomable object of investigation by numerous disciplinary fields that have sought to understand the condition from multiple lenses and vied for their respective power of interpretation. This book explores the representation of autism in medical, popular, and literary discourses. Focusing on the works of Temple Grandin, it understands her oeuvre as a prism for refracting perspectives that have taken a stand on the question and definition of autism in past and contemporary debates. It further illuminates the crucial interconnection between life sciences and life writing, which goes far beyond the example of autism and demonstrates how central it is to bridge the divide between the life sciences and the humanities. Such an interdisciplinary dialogue, this book proposes, can lead to a significant advancement of knowledge about autism and other forms of neurodiversity.

Hamideh Mahdiani presents answers to this question by challenging a reductionistic understanding of resilience from single disciplinary perspectives; by questioning the dominance of life sciences in defining an age-old concept; and by problematizing the neglected role of life writing in fostering resilience.     While aging and the life-course appear to be normalized processes, the complex construction of age at the intersection of biology, society, and culture remains opaque. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of age(ing) by exploring its construction through the analysis of extraordinary cases. Focusing on life narratives of centenarians and children with progeria, Julia Velten analyzes the way in which these people experience age(ing) and shows how these experiences can contribute to our understanding of age. Situated at the intersection of aging studies and medical humanities, the study explores what extraordinary age(ing) can tell us about aging processes in general

    Media depictions of Arabs and Muslims continue to be framed by images of camels, belly dancers, and dagger-wearing terrorists. But do only Hollywood movies and TV news have the power to frame public discourse? This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies »West of Kabul, East of New York«, »Letters from Cairo«, and »Howling in Mesopotamia« makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory.

    Austers autobiographische Werke, die sich über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 30 Jahren erstrecken, markieren die elementaren Stationen in seiner Schriftstellerkarriere: von Austers Anfängen als prosaischer Schriftsteller über eine Phase des künstlerischen Umbruchs bis zu einem Werk, das er im Bewusstsein seiner Endlichkeit verfasst. Diese Werke, die innerhalb des Forschungskanons zu Auster bis heute kaum vertreten sind, gewähren als Abbilder dieser Entwicklungsphasen unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf Vergangenheit und Gegenwart – sie geben faszinierende Einblicke in Austers Selbstbild als Schriftsteller. Diese Studie untersucht anhand von ‚White Spaces‘, ‚The Invention of Solitude‘, ‚Hand to Mouth‘ und ‚Winter Journal‘ die Gründe für Austers Hinwendung zum autobiographischen Genre sowie die vielschichtigen Erscheinungsformen seiner Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst.     Transnational American Studies have been developed by international and internationally minded scholars to address the need for border-crossing awareness, knowledge and consciousness of difference. In a decisive change from the comparativist pattern of investigation between two or more assumed units, the transnational approach intends a further opening of cultural systems. With their transnational turn, the focus of American Studies has become relocated to increasingly international and global concerns of knowledge production and cultural transfer as well as to multi- and transnational discourses. This volume combines Transnational American Studies from diverse angles in the four general areas “Repositioning the American South”, “Life, Literature, Ecocriticism”, “Life Writing and Medicine” and “Critical Studies of the Nation”. Written by scholars disciplinarily and institutionally linked to American Studies departments mainly, the themes are, however, not restricted to American Studies as a nationally bound field, but extend and pertain to transnational and global discourses and their conceptual composition and processing.

    “Through the Bars of My Memory” investigates how prison experiences are remembered and constructed in 40 autobiographical prison texts published during the prison movement of the 1970s and 1980s. It explores how the autobiographers narratively construct their identities in the process of remembering their prison experiences and how the texts position themselves to the prison movement via these identity constructions. The study demonstrates how the autobiographical texts negotiate the protagonist’s identity to be perceived as a legitimate voice in the prison movement and as a rightful subject of reform efforts thereby participating in the struggles raging over the future of the prison system during that time. The analysis focuses on the construction of collective identification, the negotiation of the label of perpetrator and the construction of victimhood, and the positioning towards rehabilitation through the construction of identity transformation processes.

    Fugitive Borders explores a new archive of 19th-century autobiographical writing by black authors in North America. For that purpose, Nele Sawallisch examines four different texts written by formerly enslaved men in the 1850s that emerged in or around the historical region of Canada West (now known as Ontario) and that defy the genre conventions of the classic slave narrative. Instead, these texts demonstrate originality in expressing complex, often ambivalent attitudes towards the so-called Canadian Promised Land and contribute to a form of textual community-building across national borders. In the context of emerging national discourses before Canada's Confederation in 1867, they offer alternatives to the hegemonic narrative of the white settler nation.

    Media depictions of Arabs and Muslims continue to be framed by images of camels, belly dancers, and dagger-wearing terrorists. But do only Hollywood movies and TV news have the power to frame public discourse? This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies "West of Kabul, East of New York", "Letters from Cairo", and "Howling in Mesopotamia" makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory.

    Fugitive Borders explores a new archive of 19th-century autobiographical writing by black authors in North America. For that purpose, Nele Sawallisch examines four different texts written by formerly enslaved men in the 1850s that emerged in or around the historical region of Canada West (now known as Ontario) and that defy the genre conventions of the classic slave narrative. Instead, these texts demonstrate originality in expressing complex, often ambivalent attitudes towards the so-called Canadian Promised Land and contribute to a form of textual community-building across national borders. In the context of emerging national discourses before Canada's Confederation in 1867, they offer alternatives to the hegemonic narrative of the white settler nation.
