    A constant feature of Jewish culture in the medieval Mediterranean was the dedication of panegyric texts in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, and other languages to men of several ranks: scholars, communal leaders, courtiers, merchants, patrons, and poets. Although the imagery of nature and eroticism in the preludes to these poems is often studied, the substance of what follows is generally neglected, as it is perceived to be repetitive, obsequious, and less aesthetically interesting than other types of poetry from the period. In Dominion Built of Praise, Jonathan Decter demurs. As is the case with visual portraits, panegyrics operate according to a code of cultural norms that tell us at least as much about the society that produced them as the individuals they portray. Looking at the phenomenon of panegyric in Mediterranean Jewish culture from several overlapping perspectives—social, historical, ethical, poetic, political, and theological—he finds that they offer representations of Jewish political leadership as it varied across geographic area and evolved over time.Decter focuses his analysis primarily on Jewish centers in the Islamic Mediterranean between the tenth and thirteenth centuries and also includes a chapter on Jews in the Christian Mediterranean through the fifteenth century. He examines the hundreds of panegyrics that have survived: some copied repeatedly in luxurious anthologies, others discarded haphazardly in the Cairo Geniza. According to Decter, the poems extolled conventional character traits ascribed to leaders not only diachronically within the Jewish political tradition but also synchronically within Islamic and, to a lesser extent, Christian civilization and political culture. Dominion Built of Praise reveals more than a superficial and functional parallel between Muslim and Jewish forms of statecraft and demonstrates how ideas of Islamic political legitimacy profoundly shaped the ways in which Jews conceptualized and portrayed their own leadership

El presente volumen puede considerarse el primer fruto de los trabajos auspiciados por el Proyecto de Investigación FFI2015-63554-P "Las Artes del Elogio: Poesía, Retórica e Historia en los Panegíricos hispanos" (ARELPH), financiado por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, del Programa Estatal de Fomento de la Investigación Científica y Técnica de Excelencia. Junto a los capítulos firmados por los miembros que componen el equipo investigador (Jesús Ponce Cárdenas, Mercedes Blanco, Ignacio Díez Fernández, Juan Antonio González Iglesias, Pedro Conde Parrado, Rolan d Béhar, Antonio Portela Lopa) figuran asimismo otra serie de estudios surgidos de la colaboración con grupos de investigación afines. Quisiéramos citar en primer lugar la cooperación con el «Corpus de la literatura latina del Renacimiento español VIII» (FFI2015-64490-P) del Plan Nacional I+D (Proyecto de Excelencia) y la Red de Excelencia "Europa Renascens. Biblioteca Digital de Humanismo y Tradición Clásica (España y Portugal)" (FFI 2015-69220 REDT), representados en este tomo por Manuel Antonio Díaz Gito.     In der frühen Neuzeit, und insbesondere im 17. Jahrhundert, beginnen in Europa die ersten großen modernen revolutionären Bewegungen - zunächst im habsburgischen Reich die Revolte der böhmischen Stände gegen den Kaiser und König im Jahre 1618, worauf der Aufstand in England gegen Karl I. und die französische "Fronde" folgten. Aber auch das Lob des Herrschers, ein obligatorisches Element der Hofopern, der Widmungen und Dramen, war in manchen Fällen der Anlass, eine verschlüsselte Kritik an dem Herrscher zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Während des Saarbrücker Kolloquiums wurde dieses Phänomen anhand symptomatischer Beispiele analysiert.     "Although the matter is the subject of scholarly controversy, it is remarkable to think that the poet Horace was almost certainly a member of Octavian's entourage on that early September day more than two thousand years ago. He owed his presence at the battle to his friendship with Gaius Maecenas, who was a member of Octavian's inner circle and may aptly be described as a 'minister' of the newly victorious leader. In his first collection of poems, Book 1 of the Sermones or 'Satires', published in 36/35 bc, the poet describes his first meeting with Maecenas two or three years earlier. His name had been mentioned to the great man by his friends and fellow poets Virgil and Varius, but, when he came into Maecenas' presence, overcome by the occasion, he was tongue-tied. Nevertheless, after nine months he was summoned back and 'ordered' to be counted among Maecenas' amici (S. 1.6.54-62)"--

    A constant feature of Jewish culture in the medieval Mediterranean was the dedication of panegyric texts in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, and other languages to men of several ranks: scholars, communal leaders, courtiers, merchants, patrons, and poets. Although the imagery of nature and eroticism in the preludes to these poems is often studied, the substance of what follows is generally neglected, as it is perceived to be repetitive, obsequious, and less aesthetically interesting than other types of poetry from the period. In Dominion Built of Praise, Jonathan Decter demurs. As is the case with visual portraits, panegyrics operate according to a code of cultural norms that tell us at least as much about the society that produced them as the individuals they portray. Looking at the phenomenon of panegyric in Mediterranean Jewish culture from several overlapping perspectives—social, historical, ethical, poetic, political, and theological—he finds that they offer representations of Jewish political leadership as it varied across geographic area and evolved over time.Decter focuses his analysis primarily on Jewish centers in the Islamic Mediterranean between the tenth and thirteenth centuries and also includes a chapter on Jews in the Christian Mediterranean through the fifteenth century. He examines the hundreds of panegyrics that have survived: some copied repeatedly in luxurious anthologies, others discarded haphazardly in the Cairo Geniza. According to Decter, the poems extolled conventional character traits ascribed to leaders not only diachronically within the Jewish political tradition but also synchronically within Islamic and, to a lesser extent, Christian civilization and political culture. Dominion Built of Praise reveals more than a superficial and functional parallel between Muslim and Jewish forms of statecraft and demonstrates how ideas of Islamic political legitimacy profoundly shaped the ways in which Jews conceptualized and portrayed their own leadership
