    This Pre-Analysis Plan is for a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) for recently formed youth business groups in Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Resource-poor rural youth are given a business opportunity by being allocated a rehabilitated land area where they can establish a joint business. They are organized as a primary cooperative and self-organize with a board of five members including a leader and a vice leader. The overall objective of the project is to identify factors that enhance the performance and sustainability of formal youth groups as a business and livelihood option. The project includes three RCTs and this registration is for one of these RCTs. This study is an RCT that aims to investigate the benefits of training elected female group members in this setting where male group members dominate as group board members and leaders in most groups. The training will consist of training in production planning and marketing and use of mobile phones for these purposes. An additional effect of the training is also to create social networks and professional contacts across groups among female members that receive the joint training. Ethiopian culture is patriarchal, and men have traditionally been household heads and taken up almost all leadership positions in the society. Recent legal reforms in the country have strengthened women's land rights (Holden et al. 2011). Less is known about the position of women in business. They are supposed to have equal rights to men as members of primary cooperative businesses that we study. However, they are outnumbered by men in such business groups (38% of the members are women), are less likely to be board members (only 24% of the female group members against 38% of male members are board members), and much less likely to be group leaders/vice group leaders (only 4% of females and 22% of males are in such positions) (Holden and Tilahun 2019b). Female group members are also less likely to own mobile phones (31% of female against 72% of male members (Holden and Tilahun 2019b)). Mobile phones are instrumental in doing business such as for marketing, organization of groups, and contacting authorities.

    Like all fundamental categories, work becomes ever more complex as we examine it more closely. The terms “work,” “labor,” “job,” “employment,” “occupation,” “profession,” “vocation,” “task,” “toil,” “effort,” “pursuit,” and “calling” form a dense web of overlapping and contrasting meanings. Moreover, the analysis of work must contend with how histories of class struggle, gendered and sexual divisions of labor, racial hierarchies, and citizenship regimes have determined who counts as a worker and qualifies for the rights, protections, and social respect thereof. And yet waged work is only the tip of an enormous iceberg that feminist theorists call “socially reproductive labor”—the gendered, mostly unpaid, and hidden work of caring for, feeding, nursing, and teaching the next generation of workers. This collection of essays explores the richness of work as a linguistic, cultural, and historical concept and the conjunctures that are changing work and its worlds.

By focusing on the relations between quantification, the body, and labor, this volume sheds light on the ways in which discourses on data collection, office work, and production are instrumental in redefining concepts of labor, including notions of immaterial and free labor in an increasingly virtual work environment. The contributions explore the functions of quantification in conceptualizing the body as a laboring body and examine how quantification contributes to disciplining the body. By doing so, they also inquire how practices of self-tracking, self-monitoring, and self-optimization have evolved historically

Nadine Taha blickt auf den Aufstieg der nordamerikanischen Industrieforschung zwischen 1870 und 1950. Anhand von Fallstudien rekonstruiert sie die gemeinsamen Wurzeln von telekommunikativen Massenmedien und Bürokratie. Dabei macht sie die Wirkmächtigkeit von Patenten, Labornotizbüchern, Spezifikationen und laboratorischen Reportsystemen sichtbar, die unzertrennlicher Teil der Erfindungsgeschichte technischer Medien sind

    Unter dem Titel LAB. Jahrbuch für Künste und Apparate der KHM Köln entstanden in den Jahren 1996 bis 2006 sieben Jahrbücher der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln. Mehr als einhundert international bedeutsame Autorinnen und Autoren, Künstlerinnen und Künstler, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler haben darin unterschiedliche Positionen, wissenschaftlich-diskursive Abhandlungen wie auch poetisch-visuelle Entwürfe formuliert. Die Herausgeber der Jahrbücher, Hans Ulrich Reck und Siegfried Zielinski, haben einige wenige Dutzende Beiträge daraus ausgewählt und präsentieren nun einen Querschnitt, der einen neuen, ebenso frischen wie distanzierten Einblick in dieses singuläre Projekt erlaubt. Es entsteht eine Perspektive auf die Substanz der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln und ihren Beitrag zu einer Poetisierung und Historisierung der medialen Produktion, Poietik und Reflektion des ausgehenden letzten und des Beginns des aktuellen Jahrhunderts.

    We present novel evidence on the effects of advanced technologies on employment, skill demand, and firm performance. The main finding is that advanced technologies led to increases in employment and no change in skill composition. Our main research design focuses on a technology subsidy program in Finland that induced sharp increases in technology investment in manufacturing firms. Our data directly measure multiple technologies and skills and track firms and workers over time. We demonstrate novel text analysis and machine learning methods to perform matching and to measure specific technological changes. To explain our findings, we outline a theoretical framework that contrasts two types of technological change: process versus product. We document that firms used new technologies to produce new types of output rather than replace workers with technologies within the same type of production. The results contrast with the ideas that technologies necessarily replace workers or are skill biased.
