[The Lutheran »Dual Terms«] The »dual terms« Law and Gospel, Faith and Good Deeds, Old and New Covenant, Promise and Fulfilment have been central to Lutheran hermeneutics. They do have an ambivalent history: Lutheran theology, piety, and homiletics have relied on them as the key to an existential and theological understanding of biblical texts. At the same time they have been used much too often as a means to debase Jewish religion. The Bishops' Conference of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) assigned an examination of these terms and their use to the Theological Board of VELKD. The collection of essays is the result of this examination: Various disciplines of Theology give an insight into the formation, meaning and development of the "dual terms", the dangers and how to avoid them, current aesthetics to these terms and possibilities to further use them, against the background of the Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Concerned by the ever-widening chasm between Paul and Reformation theology, Forensic Apocalyptic Theology is a thorough and innovative examination of the mature work of Karl Barth in relationship to the question of Paul and the Protestant doctrine of justification. Shannon Nicole Smythe argues that the basis of Barth's revised doctrine of justification is located in his mature Christology, which is both deeply apocalyptic and thoroughly forensic. Closely analyzing Barth's exegetical work, Smythe discovers in Barth what she terms a "forensic-apocalyptic" approach, which allows him to formulate a doctrine of justification with stronger ties not only to the Reformation doctrine but also to Pauline apocalyptic. The result is that Barth's doctrine of justification is not susceptible to the same criticisms commonly brought against a judicial (forensic) reading, while his soteriology becomes more consistently forensic than that of the Reformation and points toward a different approach to the relationship between justification in Paul and the Protestant doctrine. This book breaks a significant impasse in much Pauline interpretation, pushing beyond both "Lutheran" and "New" perspectives on Paul to a non-contractual, "apocalyptic" reading of many of the apostle's most famous, and most troublesome, texts. His strongly antithetical vision identifies "participation in Christ" as the sole core of Pauline theology and produces the most radical rereading of Romans 1-4 for more than a generation. Even those who disagree will be forced to clarify their views as never before

Even those who disagree will be forced to clarify their views as never before.
