    This dissertation presents a novel approach to tracing the history of techne in 1990s through a data feminist curation methodology that selects, models, visualizes, and analyzes a selection of 1990s journals in Rhetoric and Composition. This dissertation arises from an interest with invention arising out of the 1990s to historicize creative pedagogies and theories of composing that were influenced by the discipline's own historiographic uptake of the social turn to contextualize theory, pedagogy, and rhetorical history. I turn to techne for its theorizing of rhetorical invention in deriving value in the process of making with language and the utility of things made with language and point to the difficulty of tracing techne through traditional database research tools and historiographic methodologies. Out of this historical moment, this dissertation asks: What can a keyword examination of techne in 1990s rhetoric and composition scholarship reveal about its historical placements in the field? What are the principal ways in which histories of techne are linked to (or have been delinked from) histories of creativity, imagination, invention, and text technologies? What material or residual aspects of techne should historiographers trace in order to best explore the constellations of techne in published scholarship? How can a data curation methodology assist with the emergence of this trace? I propose a feminist data curation as a methodology that brings together data feminism and rhetorical historiography to trace the impressions of techne within a corpus made of nine rhetoric and composition journals from the 1990s. This project provides a methodology for using big data methods in Rhetoric and Composition scholarship in data curation, and enriches digital humanities work in the discipline. Out of this corpus, I use data curation to generate and analyze topics models of the corpus and snapshots of the corpus to identify and contextualize impressions of techne which emerge. To assist with locating impressions of techne within the scholarship, I use Kelly Pender's five composition definitions of techne, topic modeling, and visualizations to trace impressions of techne within the scholarship of the decade. Visualizations help to contextualize and argue for relationships and trend in the generated topic models for the impressions of techne. Using data curation to trace techne, I found that impressions of the techne can be found throughout the decade and embedded within and alongside a number of other contexts. I then create a provisional historiographic trace of techne using data to support a re-historicization of the concept as emerging form 1990s scholarship. I further the history of techne through these provisional tracings of the concept through the selection of scholarship in the 1990s and propose avenues for enriching the history of techne. I also suggest that this history enriches theories of invention that inform current theory and pedagogies for composition.

    Die Mängel des europäischen Rechts sind seit langem bekannt. Die EU hat deshalb bereits vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren begonnen, ihre Rechtsetzung zu verbessern. Unionsbürger, Wirtschaft und die Mitgliedstaaten sollen von den Vorteilen einfacher, verständlicher und kostengünstiger Rechtsvorschriften profitieren. In den Jahren 2015 und 2016 haben Kommission, Parlament und Rat ihr Engagement für eine Bessere Rechtsetzung durch umfangreiche Maßnahmen abermals bekräftigt.Doch wie geeignet sind diese Anstrengungen der drei am Rechtsetzungsverfahren beteiligten Unionsorgane, das Ziel einer Besseren Rechtsetzung in der EU zu verwirklichen? Die anhaltende Kritik an den ergriffenen Maßnahmen gibt Anlass dazu, das europäische Konzept der Besseren Rechtsetzung eingehend zu analysieren und seine tatsächliche Leistungsfähigkeit festzustellen. Hierfür untersucht Maximilian Mödinger die Funktions- und Wirkungsweise einzelner Instrumente des Konzepts, arbeitet Defizite sowie deren Ursachen heraus und entwickelt hierauf aufbauend Reformvorschläge.     Von Kreativität ist heute in allen möglichen Zusammenhängen die Rede. Was sie genau auszeichnet und wie sie sich zeigt, ist allerdings durchaus klärungsbedürftig – im Blick sowohl auf notwendige strukturelle Kontexte, gleichsam Bedingungen der Möglichkeit von Kreativität, als auch auf die »Logik« und Gestalt kreativer Praktiken. Dabei scheint offensichtlich, dass kreative Prozesse nicht im Nirgendwo ansetzen. Sie setzen vielmehr etwas voraus (was immer dies ist), das sie transformieren, reformieren oder revolutionieren – ohne dass sich diese Prozesse selbst wiederum auf regelhaftes, lern- und reproduzierbares Wissen reduzieren ließen. Derart lebt Kreativität von Unbestimmtheit. Sie verweist auf unabschließbare Möglichkeiten. Über Artikulationen von Kreativität Although there is talk today of creativity in all conceivable contexts, its exact characteristics and how it is manifested still need to be clarified with regard to both the necessary structural contexts – the conditions required to create creativity, as it were – as well as the »logic« and form of creative practices. It seems obvious that creative processes do not just emerge from nowhere, but instead presuppose something (whatever that may be) which they transform, reform or revolutionise – without these processes themselves being reduced to regularly learnable and reproducible knowledge. It is in this way that creativity lives on indeterminacy and points to open-ended possibilities.     Did the outbreak of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars influence technical change during the Industrial Revolution? We address this question by investigating an instance of state intervention into the market for inventions from 1793-1820: the introduction of a new proviso into British patents compelling inventors to supply the military, and also attracting military inventions from outside the patent system. We present new patent data alongside previously unused archival evidence to argue that the state's intervention helped direct technical change in Britain. Our evidence provides additional support for the military-demand-induced hypothesis as a credible explanation for Britain's ongoing industrialisation.

    In dieser Studie zeigt Joel B. Kemp auf, dass durch die Konzentration auf juristische Symbolik und Diktion in Hesekiel 1–33 zusätzliche Klarheit für die Bedeutung, Funktion und innere Logik mehrerer Passagen entsteht. Er zeigt auch, dass die Autoren von Hesekiel rechtliche Elemente verwenden, um die Identität der Judäer nach der Eroberung durch die Babylonier zu beschreiben. The consistent presence of juridical diction, legal metaphors, and courtroom imagery reveals that Ezekiel 1–33 is set within a precise juridical framework. In this study, Joel B. Kemp argues that focusing upon these legal elements has two primary benefits for our understanding of the book. First, the juridical framework provides greater clarity and coherence to some passages within Ezekiel 1–33. Second, the book (especially Ezekiel 16) uses its legal elements to articulate a version of Judahite identity under Neo-Babylonian hegemony. To connect these legal elements to identity development, the author uses some insights from the works of Erik Erikson and Urie Bronfenbrenner. According to his analysis, Ezekiel 16 equates the legal status of the city with Judahite identity to prove that the experiences of Neo-Babylonian domination did not nullify or rescind the legal agreement ( ברית) between the deity and Judahites. Rather, the punishment this chapter describes demonstrates the continuing validity of the contract and the version of Judahite identity rooted in it. Consequently, the Judahites' acceptance of the legal appropriateness of Neo-Babylonian domination is the sine qua non for remaining in the legal relationship that defines Judahite identity.

    Das Buch bietet genaue Lektüren von Texten Jean Pauls, Kleists und Freuds (sowie Graciáns, Sternes, F. Schlegels und Joyce’s), und richtet sich damit auf jenen Zeitraum, in dem es mit der poetologischen und philosophischen Dignität des Witzes zu Ende ging oder schon vorbei ist. In diesem verschiebt sich, was mit »Witz« gemeint ist. Handelt es sich um 1800 noch um den Witz, »den der Witzige hat«, so seit dem 19. Jahrhundert um den, »den er macht« (so pointiert Freud).Fokussiert wird der Witz als ein Ereignis der Rede, dessen unkalkulierbare Effekte sich als Einfälle wie Zu- oder Unfälle einstellen. Mit Jean Paul ist der Witz eine Kraft, die in ihrer Beschreibung nicht aufgeht. Sie manifestiert sich in plötzlichen Effekten vielfältiger und immer auch anders möglicher sprachlicher Relationen, die in den Wörtern lauern. Das Spiel mit Worten löst die Einheiten, geht auf die Buchstaben und selbst nicht-alphabetische schriftliche Marken zurück. Mit Freud kommt der Witz als sozialer Vorgang in den Blick, der Ereignischarakter der witzigen Äußerung dann als Verwicklung des Anderen ins Geschehen, dessen Medium das Lachen ist.Was der Witz ausspielt, das betrifft auch theoretische Texte und Lektüren, das Verhältnis von Witz und Theorie.
