"Samuel Beckett's private writings and public work show his deep interest in the workings of the human mind. Samuel Beckett and Psychology is an innovative study of the author's engagement with key concepts in early experimental psychology and rapidly developing scientific ideas about perception, attention and mental imagery. Through innovative new readings of Beckett's later dramatic and prose works, the book reveals the links between his aesthetic method and the methodologies of experimental psychology through the 20th century. Covering important later works including Happy Days, Not I and Footfalls, Samuel Beckett and Psychology sheds important new light on Beckett's depictions of the workings of the embodied mind"-- Introduction: Literary Experiments and the Work of Samuel Beckett -- Experimental Transitions -- Attention and Speech Perception in Not I -- Face Reading and Attentional Management in That Time -- Inattention in Footfalls -- Beckett and the Mental Image -- Percept and Image in Nohow On -- Conclusion: Experimental Beckett.

"Since the publication of her first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson quickly established herself as a powerful and insightful writer on sexuality and gender. However, the profound and persistent religious themes of her work have received much less critical attention. Jeanette Winterson and Religion is the first in-depth study of the ways in which Winterson navigates the sacred and the profane in the full range of her writing, from her first novel to later works such as The PowerBook and The Stone Gods. This book reads the author's work alongside the theological turn in the thought of such theorists as Alain Badiou, John D. Caputo and Julia Kristeva as well as feminist and queer theologians such as Catherine Keller and Marcella Althaus-Reid. In this way, Jeanette Winterson and Religion reveals how Jeanette Winterson stakes out a unique and intriguing post-secular literary form of the sacred."-- 1. -- Introduction 2. -- 'I Love Both of Them': Queer Love and the Religious in Oranges are not the Only Fruit -- 3. -- 'Colours and Folly': Retelling the Noah Story in Boating For Beginners 4. -- The Love Event in The Passion 5. -- Sexing the Cherry and the Monstrous Maternal 6. -- Written on the Body and the Negative Theology Tradition 7. -- Art & Lies: Literature in a Neoliberal Age 8. -- Gut Symmetries, New Physics and Kabbalah 9. -- The PowerBook and Virtual Culture 10.Lighthousekeeping and the Religious Vocation 11.The Stone Gods' Climate Change Apocalypse 12. This unique study explores how Quebec's landscapes have been represented in both literature and visual art throughout the centuries, from the writing of early explorers such as Cartier and Champlain to work by prominent contemporary authors and artists from the province. William J. Berg traces recurrent images and themes within these creations through the most significant periods in the development of a Quebecois identity that was threatened initially by the wilderness and indigenous populations, and later by the dominance of British and American influences.Focusing on the interplay between nature and culture in landscape representation, Literature and Painting in Quebec contends that both have reflected and fashioned the meaning of French-Canadian nationhood. As such, Literature and Painting in Quebec presents a new perspective to approach the notion of national identity, a quest that few groups have engaged in more persistently than the Quebecois

"This study of the House of Fame is the product of a long-time fascination with the poem. The thought of Chaucer having newly returned from several trips to Italy and engaging with the writings of Dante and Boccaccio for the first time, offered an exciting window onto late medieval English literary culture at a moment of profound change. He, and they, newly took up the vernacular against conventional wisdom as the medium to explore philosophical, aesthetic, and theological questions. By reading the House of Fame only as a Dantean poem, many readers have done it a disservice and missed much of the poem's important dialogue with Boccaccio; he left many legacies for Chaucer, the most important of which was a vernacular model for departing from Dantean poetics. Boccaccio also foregrounded a poetics of mural ekphrasis. Chaucer eagerly adopts this, but also fills the House of Fame with a striking concentration of three-dimensional visual images, some evoking the religious statuary of his own time, and some the theme of Apocalypse then popular. Since for the later medieval layperson and cleric, visual literacy often took precedence over literacy of the written word, it is important that we read poetic texts in the context of images. In the House of Fame Chaucer begins to present his own vision (however unfinished) as commensurate with Dante's or even Boccaccio's; the poem has much to tell us about his early acquaintance with the Italian poets and his restless struggle to understand and visualize fame, even on their terms. It is a poem always on the move, always in the process of its own "makyng," flaws and all. We must take it as it is, but we must also see it as a "work in progress," a rich and fascinating record of Chaucer's discovery of new intellectual horizons in the years after his sojourns in Italy"-- Boccaccio's Narrative Arts: Text, Ekphrasis, Image -- Statuary and Ekphrasis in the House of Fame, Book 1: Rewriting Boccaccio -- House of Fame, Book 2: Renavigating Flight in the Dream Vision -- Visualizing Fame in House of Fame, Book 3 -- House of Fame, Book 3: Fame's Adherents and the House of Rumour

The three sections in this volume in honor of his 65th birthday examine the dynamics between image and text, going beyond the static understanding of ekphrasis as a mere strategy for providing evidence. It investigates the intersections between imagery and writteness as dynamic forms of movement and knowledge

Chaston -- Chapter Three. The Mask Of Dionysos: Euripides, Bakkhai /C. Chaston -- Conclusion /C. Chaston -- Bibliography /C. Chaston -- Index Locorum /C. Chaston -- General Index /C. Chaston. By applying aspects of cognitive psychology to a study of three key tragic props, this book examines the importance of visual imagery in ancient Greek tragedy. The shield, the urn and the mask are props which serve as controls for investigating the connection between visual imagery and the spectators' intellectual experience of tragic drama. As vehicles for conceptual change the props point to a function of imagery in problem solving. Connections between the visual and the cognitive in tragedy, particularly through image shape and its potential for various meanings, add a new perspective to scholarship on the role of the visual in ancient performance. These connections also add weight to the importance of imagery in contemporary problem solving and creative thought

This volume highlights the importance of imagology, one of the most popular areas of research in contemporary comparative studies. It proposes new means of academic analysis to create critical attitudes towards the development of imagological studies. The topics discussed draw a wide trajectory, from classical to marginal images, from national heroes to (un)conventional aspects of gender, from ethno-imagology to the broader dimension of intercultural references and epistemological post-poststructuralist changes. The compendium widens the field of imagology by introducing concepts such as "geo-imagology" and "imagology of gender", and by linking the imagological strategy with the power principle developed by post-colonialism and with the fictional project of an imaginary utopian society. The essays selected include case studies focusing on the works of individual authors, as well as broader insights concentrating on regional, national and transnational identities that experienced a change of imagery due to historical, political and social shifts. The book pays particular attention to the aspects of mobile imagery, the emergence of peripheral identities related to gender, class, ethnicity or race, and the detection and assessment of well-established stereotypes. The scope of the topics discussed and the variety of periods covered imply the universal nature and versatile applicability of literary imagology. Intro -- Table of Contents -- Introduction -- Focus I: Theoretical Principles, Terms, and Definitions -- Imagology as Image Geology -- Wider Image -- Focus II: From National Imagination to Utopia -- Enlightenment Culture and Others -- Development of the National Hero in Latvian Literature -- Nation and Utopia -- How a Lithuanian Transformed a Nazi into a Jew -- Focus III: Transgressing Real and Imaginary Boundaries -- The Self-image of the Latvians and the Image of the Lithuanians in the Book Leišmal te by Imants and Rimants Ziedonis -- Scottish Traces in the Lithuanian Landscape -- Some Remarks on the Estonian War Novel -- Multicultural Imagery in Andrei Ivanov s "Scandinavian Trilogy" -- Focus IV: Gender Identity as an Imagological Resource -- From Boys to Men -- Towards a New Self-image for Women in China -- Focus V: The Stability and Changeability of National (Stereo)types -- The Image of Uncivilized Lithuania in the Correspondence of Representatives of the Holy See -- The Literary Image of the Pole in the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) -- Discovering Distant Neighbours -- Cultural Stereotypes of Vilnius in the Modern Poetry of Lithuanian Poles -- Contributors -- Index of Names.

"In 1911, Franz Kafka encountered the Kaiser Panorama: a stereoscopic peep show offering an illusion of three-dimensional depth. After the experience, he began to emulate the apparatus' set-up in his literary sketches, developing a style we might call "stereoscopic," juxtaposing, like the optical stereoscope, two images of the same object seen from slightly different perspectives. Isak Winkel Holm argues that Kafka's stereoscopic style is crucial to an understanding of the relation between literature and politics in Kafka's work. At the level of content, the stereoscopic style offers a representation of the basic order of a specific community. At the level of form, the stereoscopic style is structured as the juxtaposition of two dissimilar images of the same community. At the level of function, finally, the style provokes a reconsideration, and perhaps even a reconfiguration, of the social order itself. With insights from literary studies, philosophical aesthetics and political theory, Kafka's Stereoscopes offers a detailed but highly readable argument for the relevance of Kafka's literary works in today's political reality"--

"With its laser-focus on the requirements and structure of narrative, The Metanarrative Hall of Mirrors is the first sustained comparative study of how images are created in prose and cinema. In film examples ranging from Citizen Kane through Apocalypse Now to Blade Runner 2049 , then on to Christopher Nolan's 2020 Tenet , Garrett Stewart tracks the shift from celluloid to digital cinema through various narrative approaches to the image, from freeze-frames to computer-generated special effects. By bringing these insights into dialogue with contemporary literature, Stewart discovers a common tendency in contemporary storytelling, in both prose and visual narrative, from the ongoing trend of "mind-game" films to the often puzzling narrative eccentricities of such different writers as Richard Powers and Nicholson Baker. The Metanarrative Hall of Mirrors is an important new work for anyone studying contemporary fiction and film and how narrative works, on screen and page alike."--

"As Aristotle has written, the image is at the core of the soul's language. Indeed, given its significant potential and capacity for revelation - heightened in a society dominated by visual culture - the image would seem to be key to reflecting, critically and creatively, on humanity and on history itself. Lídia Jorge has asserted several times that her writing has always taken as its starting point a powerful and inspiring image, which concentrates the various senses and reflections that she intends to explore while also dispersing these throughout the work. Envisioning the initial image, Jorge manages to develop a gaze which is simultaneously critical, thorough and informative. Scholars point out that whenever language opens to universal images and mythologies capable of conveying visions of clarity, the subversive power of beauty is re-asserted, which is confirmed and studied from different points of view and theories in this volume on Lídia Jorge's work. One of them even claims that in discussing Lídia Jorge's fiction, we might talk about a theory or poetics of the image"--

Through a series of close readings centered primarily on Virgil's 'Aeneid', Kirk Freudenburg shows that the experiential effects that Virgil puts into play do serious narrative work of their own by structuring lines of sight, both visual and emotive, and shifting them about in ways that move readers (interpellated as viewers) into and out of the visual and emotional worlds of the story's characters.

This volume is a collection of essays on classical Persian literature, focusing on Persian rhetorical devices, especially imagery and metaphors. The various contributions discuss the origin and the development of debate poetry, the transmission of Persian and Arabic tales to the works of Europeans medieval authors such as Boccaccio and Chaucer, but also the development of Aristotelian poetics and epistemology in Persian philosophical tradition. Furthermore, the baroque style of the Shiʿite author Ḥusayn Vāʾiẓ Kāshifī, the use of wine metaphors by mystics such as Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, Ḥāfiẓ’s original use of candle metaphors, the translation of Khayyām’s metaphors into English, and the importance of a single metaphor in the epic Barzū-nāma are discussed. Contributors include: F. Abdullaeva, G.R. van den Berg, J. Landau, F.D. Lewis, N. Pourjavady, Ch. van Ruymbeke, A. Sedighi and S. Sharma
