    Die Genese literarischer Texte und damit ihre dritte, zeitliche Dimension darzustellen, das stieß im zweidimensionalen Buch notgedrungen an Grenzen. Dagegen eröffnen sich mit der Digitalisierung neue Perspektiven: Die dritte Dimension der Textgenese wird durch Hyperlinkstrukturen und neue bild- und textgebende Verfahren erfahrbar. Dabei werden nicht nur die hohen Standards, die die Buchedition für die Tiefenerschließung der Makro- wie der Mikrogenese literarischer Texte entwickelt hat, adäquat in das digitale Medium überführt; vielmehr generiert die digitale Edition auch einen zusätzlichen Mehrwert, indem sie eine deutlich benutzerfreundlichere Gestaltung für die intuitive Erfassung durch das Auge und Optimierungen für maschinelle Nutzungen bietet. Allerdings müssen digitiale Editionen mit der rasanten technologischen Entwicklung Schritt halten und Lösungen für das dringende Problem ihrer Langzeitexistenz finden und umsetzen. These include combinatory poetics, hypertext fiction, interactive fiction (and other game-based digital literary work), kinetic and interactive poetry, and networked writing based on our collective experience of the Internet. He argues that electronic literature demands to be read both through the lens of experimental literary practices dating back to the early twentieth century and through the specificities of the technology and software used to produce the work.

    Many pioneering works of electronic literature are now largely inaccessible because of changes in hardware, software, and platforms. The virtual disappearance of these works--created on floppy disks, in Apple's defunct HyperCard, and on other early systems and platforms--not only puts important electronic literary work out of reach but also signals the fragility of most works of culture in the digital age. In response, Dene Grigar and Stuart Moulthrop have been working to document and preserve electronic literature, work that has culminated in the Pathfinders project and its series of "Traversals"--Video and audio recordings of demonstrations performed on historically appropriate platforms, with participation and commentary by the authors of the works. In Traversals, Moulthrop and Grigar mine this material to examine four influential early works: Judy Malloy's Uncle Roger (1986), John McDaid's Uncle Buddy's Phantom Funhouse (1993), Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl (1995) and Bill Bly's We Descend (1997), offering "deep readings" that consider the works as both literary artifacts and computational constructs. For each work, Moulthrop and Grigar explore the interplay between the text's material circumstances and the patterns of meaning it engages and creates, paying attention both to specificities of media and purposes of expression.

    An exploration of what experimental literature in both print and programmable media tells us about the act of reading.In Scripting Reading Motions, Manuel Portela explores the expressive use of book forms and programmable media in experimental works of both print and electronic literature and finds a self-conscious play with the dynamics of reading and writing. Portela examines a series of print and digital works by Johanna Drucker, Mark Z. Danielewski, Rui Torres, Jim Andrews, and others, for the insights they yield about the semiotic and interpretive actions through which readers produce meaning when interacting with codes. Analyzing these works as embodiments and simulations of the motions of reading, Portela pays particular attention to the ways in which awareness of eye movements and haptic interactions in both print and electronic media feeds back onto the material and semantic layers of the works. These feedbacks, he argues, sustain self-reflexive loops that link the body of the reader to the embodied work. Readers' haptic actions and eye movements coinstantiate the object that they are reading.Portela discusses typographic and graphic marks as choreographic notations for reading movements; examines digital recreations of experimental print literary artifacts; considers reading motions in kinetic and generated texts; analyzes the relationship of bibliographic, linguistic, and narrative coding in Danielewski's novel-poem, Only Revolutions; and describes emergent meanings in interactive textual instruments. The expressive use of print and programmable media, Portela shows, offers a powerful model of the semiotic, interpretive, and affective operations embodied in reading processes.Important Notice: The digital edition of this book is missing some of the images found in the physical edition.

Reaching back to early experiments with digital writing in the mainframe era and then moving through the personal computer and Internet revolutions, this book traces the changing forms of paper on which e-lit artists have drawn, including continuous paper, documentation, disk sleeves, packaging, and even artists' books. Paper Electronic Literature attests that digital literature's old media elements have much to teach us about the cultural and physical conditions in which we compute; the creativity that new media artists have shown in their dealings with old media; and the distinctively electronic issues that confront digital artists. Moving between avant-garde works and popular ones, fiction writing and poetry generation, Richard Hughes Gibson reveals the diverse ways in which paper has served as a component within electronic literature, particularly in facilitating interactive experiences for users.     Die Genese literarischer Texte und damit ihre dritte, zeitliche Dimension darzustellen, das stieß im zweidimensionalen Buch notgedrungen an Grenzen. Dagegen eröffnen sich mit der Digitalisierung neue Perspektiven: Die dritte Dimension der Textgenese wird durch Hyperlinkstrukturen und neue bild- und textgebende Verfahren erfahrbar. Dabei werden nicht nur die hohen Standards, die die Buchedition für die Tiefenerschließung der Makro- wie der Mikrogenese literarischer Texte entwickelt hat, adäquat in das digitale Medium überführt; vielmehr generiert die digitale Edition auch einen zusätzlichen Mehrwert, indem sie eine deutlich benutzerfreundlichere Gestaltung für die intuitive Erfassung durch das Auge und Optimierungen für maschinelle Nutzungen bietet. Allerdings müssen digitiale Editionen mit der rasanten technologischen Entwicklung Schritt halten und Lösungen für das dringende Problem ihrer Langzeitexistenz finden und umsetzen. By 'writing the net', Sandy Baldwin proposes three ways of analysis: 1) an understanding of the net as a loosely linked collocation of inscriptions, of writing practices and materials ranging from fundamental TCP/IP protocols to Facebook; 2) a discursive field that codifies and organizes these practices and materials into text (and into textual practices of reading, archiving, etc.), and into an aesthetic institution of 'electronic literature'; and 3) a project engaged by a subject, a commitment of the writer' body to the work of the net. It theorizes the practices and materials of net writing as extended surfaces of bodily excitation. Bodily absence leads to delirious, frantic, ecstatic writing towards the other beyond the net. By contrast, Sandy Baldwin's book describes the poetics of the net's "becoming-literary," by employing concepts that are both technically-specific and poetically-charged, providing a coherent and persuasive theory. The incorporation and projection of sites and technical protocols produces an uncanny displacement of the writer's body onto diverse part objects, and in turn to an intense and real inhabitation of the net through writing. The fundamental poetic situation of net writing is the phenomenology of "as-if."
