    This book is the first monographic study of nineteenth-century transcriptions of Chopin's music. The work is based on the quantitatively and qualitatively rich source material, which formed the basis for considerations from the perspective of social history, music analysis and aesthetics. Thanks to these multiple perspectives, as well as the time range and the source base, this study may contribute to the history of the reception of Chopin’s work in nineteenth-century culture; it may also prove significant in overcoming the attitude that aesthetically deprecates transcriptions and in adopting a different stance, regarding such adaptations as valuable texts of musical culture.

    Der Welt-Museumsverband International Council of Museums wurde 1946 als Antwort auf die Gräuel des Zweiten Weltkriegs gegründet. ICOM versteht sich als Brückenbauer, Think Tank und Netzwerk der Museumsfachleute und Museen. 75 Jahre nach Gründung ist es Zeit für eine Rückschau: Zeitzeugen-Interviews mit den noch lebenden Präsidenten von ICOM Deutschland und dem letzten ICOM-Präsidenten der DDR geben Auskunft darüber, welchen kulturpolitischen Herausforderungen der Verband sich gegenübersah, wie und ob diese bewältigt werden konnten. Tanja Bechtel hat es übernommen, leitfadengestützt im Sinne der Oral History und der Methodik von Experten-Interviews diese Zeitzeugen-Gespräche durchzuführen und in einem Bericht für ICOM Deutschland zu dokumentieren. Das Ergebnis ist ein Resümee langjähriger Verbandsarbeit im Kultursektor und eine Konfrontation mit zurückliegenden, aber auch mit aktuellen, zum Teil globalen Herausforderungen.

So wird eine Vielschichtigkeit, nicht nur linguistisch, sondern auch kulturell und methodologisch garantiert, die die wunderbare Vielfalt der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft reflektiert. Im Jahrbuch Nr. 37 berühren die Essays Themen mit antropologisch-kulturellen Ansätzen zur Archivforschung, die vom Mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und von der Sakralmusik zur Instrumentalmusik reichen. Sie legen den Schwerpunkt vor allem auf die symbolischen Mechanismen der Parodie in der gesungenen Liturgie (Therese Bruggisser-Lanker), auf die kompositorischen Gründe der Nichtvollendung der 7.     The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the ‘Great Trek’ (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Forming the concept of the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze through all the stages of its design to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble and final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it depicts this. It also investigates the active role the Monument played in the development of apartheid, and its place in post-apartheid heritage.

    This dissertation offers a history of modern commercial advertising during the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates that despite cultural barriers, advertising colonized the everyday world of Germans and began to encroach upon “German culture”. The work shows that the construct of “German culture” was not only defined by bourgeois high culture, but rather increasingly by factors from consumer culture. The imagery of advertising shaped national icons, created modified “surfaces” (for example, through illuminated ad media) and perceptions of space. Likewise, the logic of market differentiation and marketing began to determine social interactions as well as political communication (Hitler branding). This development did not progress without conflict: Debates surrounding both advertising as well as the direct confrontation between cultural critics and advertisers make clear that there was a massive collision between two mentalities. This allowed a conflict to emerge between traditional, guild thinking, high cultural representations and a putatively authentic aesthetics of content, on the one hand, and on the other hand, a “world of appearances” and aesthetic of the exterior form. One question in particular played a central role in this debate, namely: the extent to which capitalism, the market economy, consumption and the aesthetics of the modern Lebenswelt with its specific (commercial) texture were in accord with ideas of “Germanness.” Die Arbeit präsentiert die Geschichte der modernen Wirtschaftswerbung in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und zeigt, dass Werbung trotz kultureller Barrieren die Alltagswelten der Deutschen kolonialisierte und Einfluss auf die „deutsche Kultur“ nahm. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass das Konstrukt der „deutschen Kultur“ nicht ausschließlich durch die bürgerliche Hochkultur definiert wurde, sondern zunehmend auch durch Einflüsse der Konsumkultur bestimmt war. Die Bilderwelten der Werbung prägten nationale Ikonen, schufen (bspw. durch Leuchtwerbung) modifizierte "Oberflächen" und Raumwahrnehmungen, ebenso wie die Logik der Marktdifferenzierung und des Marketing soziale Interaktionen als auch die politische Kommunikation (Hitler als Marke) zu bestimmen begann. Diese Entwicklung verlief nicht konfliktfrei. Sowohl die Debatten über Werbung als auch die direkte Konfrontation zwischen Kulturkritikern und Werbern verdeutlichen den massiven Zusammenprall zweier Mentalitäten, die den Konflikt von traditionellem zünftigem Denken, hochkultureller Repräsentation sowie einer vermeintlich authentischen Ästhetik des Inhalts auf der einen Seite und einer "Welt des Scheins" und einer Ästhetik der äußeren Form auf der anderen Seite hervortreten ließ. In dieser Debatte spielte eine Frage eine zentrale Rolle: inwieweit Kapitalismus, Marktwirtschaft, Konsum und die Ästhetik der modernen Lebenswelt mit ihrer spezifischen (werblichen) Oberflächenstruktur mit Vorstellungen "des Deutschen" zu vereinbaren waren.

Das Zusammenführen mikro- und makrohistorischer sowie regional- und alltagsgeschichtlicher Erkenntnisse spielt dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie das Entwickeln eines ›multifokalen‹ Blickes auf musikgeschichtliche Phänomene abseits großer Künstler*innen oder kunstliebender Herrscher*innen und fernab des Kanons. Geleitet von der übergeordneten Frage danach, wie Forscher*innen als Autor*innen ihre Ergebnisse finden und präsentieren – wie sie also was warum erzählen –, geht es dabei auch um das Erzielen größtmöglicher wissenschaftlicher Transparenz und um den Einfluss der dabei involvierten Wissenschaftler*innen.

It allows the reader to «hear» elements of the soundscapes of Amsterdam, Dortmund, Lwów/Lviv, Warsaw and Breslau/Wrocław that are bound up with the traumatising experiences of violence, threats and death. Exploiting to the full methodologies and research tools developed in the fields of sound and soundscape studies, the authors analyse their reflections on autobiographical texts and art. The studies demonstrate the role urban sounds played in the inhabitants’ forging a sense of identity as they adapted to new living conditions. Darüber hinaus werden Beiträge namhafter Kollegen der internationalen Forschergemeinschaft veröffentlicht. Der vorliegende Band Nr. 36 enthält Studien zur schweizerischen Musik und zu den Identitätsdiskursen, an deren Entwicklung sie beteiligt war (Andrea Kammermann, Yannick Wey und Raymond Ammann über Ferdinand Fürchtegott Huber; Jacques Tchamkerten über Ernest Bloch). Daneben sind Beiträge zu mediengeschichtlichen Aspekten und Diskussionen über kulturelle Verbreitungsformen von Musik im 20. Jahrhundert enthalten (Carlo Piccardi über die Natur des radiophonen Musikhörens, Angela Carone über das Wirken von Roman Vlad). Aus einer anderen methodischen Perspektive analysiert Susan Rutherford die Struktur des Mythos, der die Operndiva und ihr Publikum verbindet.     Le istituzioni femminili partenopee furono centri indiscutibili di cultura, fucine di mecenatismo, laboratori privilegiati di attività artistiche e di produzioni musicali e diedero un contributo incisivo alla vita culturale e artistica della Napoli vicereale. Monasteri e conservatori impiegarono nel corso dei secoli i musicisti più rappresentativi della città di Napoli a sostegno delle cerimonie liturgiche o per curare la formazione musicale delle religiose e delle figlie ospiti. Il presente studio si propone di indagare e ricostruire le attività musicali di questi enti attraverso lo studio della documentazione proveniente dai principali archivi presenti nella città di Napoli. Le fonti d'archivio permettono infatti di comprendere quale funzione avesse l'arte musicale nella vita dei chiostri. La ricerca intende inoltre considerare la realtà monastica femminile nel suo insieme, esaminando la presenza delle comunità religiose nella città e il loro ruolo all’interno delle dinamiche della vita urbana. L'indagine condotta restituisce oggi una visione attendibile del fenomeno sonoro nel quotidiano delle realtà claustrali, portandoci a comprendere quanto le comunità monastiche femminili contribuirono allo sviluppo di tradizioni musicali, spettacolari, liturgiche.

    This book concerns the ways in which many different types of nationalism, chauvinism and racism penetrated into musical thought in the interwar period, and how the leading artistic personalities of that period reacted to these ideologies. The concept of "nationalism" is understood broadly in this book and covers the entire spectrum of its positive and negative aspects. The topics listed in the book’s title have been discussed on the example of selected four countries, significant with respect to population and territory and representing different social-political systems: Germany (mostly after 1933), Italy, Poland (after 1926) and Great Britain.     Venetian playwright and pioneer of modern theatre Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) led a ‘double life’ as a librettist, authoring nearly as many libretti as comedies- libretti which, born from the same mind and the same hand that brought forth his famous, and famously controversial, overhaul of the practices of comic theatre, could not
    but push the limits of the standing tradition to open a new chapter in opera history. Goldoni became one of the first to give shape to the dramma giocoso per musica, an innovative, realistic, and enduring new genre with intimate connections to prose comedy that met with overwhelming international success, becoming the foundation for the works of future generations, including W. A. Mozart and his Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. Perhaps because of his stature and influence as a comic playwright, Goldoni has rarely been considered as an innovator in the musical sphere. This study aims to shed new light on his primary role in the evolution of Classical opera, and on the legacy of his innovations in the European musical tradition.

This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin’s ships.

Ces vingt-deux articles tracent ensemble une histoire croisée des médiations matérielles et immatérielles, dynamiques et complexes, ayant permis la construction des identités culturelles dans trois domaines principaux : les représentations et l’imaginaire ; la médiation et les vecteurs de transmission ; la traduction, la réception et la circulation des oeuvres. Denna bok behandlar kulturella relationer mellan Frankrike och Sverige från 1945 till våra dagar. De olika artiklarna bygger på den forskning som presenterades på den internationella konferensen ”Frankrike-Sverige – Tur och retur” i Stockholm i januari 2014. Konferensen organiserades av Sorbonne-universitetet i Paris och Stockholms universitet.     Since the Middle Ages, next to churches the courts have been the most important employers of professional musicians. The important role of court music in European and particularly in German music history has not been reflected in the efforts made by musicological scholarship in the past. Although there are numerous studies on particular courts, comparative studies are still lacking. This publication documents the current state of research on the most important court chapels, as well as selected smaller aristocratic chapels in southern Germany during the eighteenth century. Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Fürstenhöfe neben den Kirchen die wichtigsten Träger des Musiklebens. Gemessen an der Bedeutung der Hofkapellen ist ihre Geschichte nur unzureichend erforscht. Es liegt zwar eine ganze Reihe von Spezialuntersuchungen zu einzelnen Höfen vor, doch fehlen nach wie vor vergleichende Untersuchungen. Die vorliegende Publikation dokumentiert den gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung zu den wichtigsten Hofkapellen sowie zu ausgewählten kleineren Adelskapellen im süddeutschen Raum.

In ihrer Literaturkolumne schreibt Eva Geulen über einen neuerdings diskutierten politisierten Blick auf das Tun der Literaturwissenschaft. Andreas Eckert informiert in seiner Geschichtskolumne über das Wirken der 1919 gegründeten International Labour Organization (ILO). Samir Sellami porträ-tiert den theorie- und experimentierfreudigen Autor Fred Moten. Stefanie Gänger und Jürgen Osterhammel sehen in der Corona-Krise einen willkommenen Anlass, noch einmal neu über den Sinn und mögliche Grenzen der Globalgeschichte nachzudenken. This first print edition of two extant manuscripts by Dorothy Calthorpe (1648-1693) introduces a new seventeenth-century woman writer to the growing canon of early modern female authors. The edition provides transcriptions of the manuscripts and Calthorpe's will, as well as a hefty apparatus that features a comprehensive introduction to Calthorpe, her family, and her work; a glossary of persons who figured in her writing and her life; and two genealogical charts. Calthorpe's writings (including both prose and verse and ranging from Petrarchan love poems to roman a clef and devotional verse), and the thoughtfully constructed and illustrated volumes in which her texts appear, demonstrate the rich intellectual life of a previously unknown female writer and provide a compelling example of Restoration manuscript production
