    In einer seiner wenigen Selbstaussagen bilanziert Wilhelm Raabe (1831-1910) die eigene Tätigkeit als Schriftsteller kurz vor seinem Tod im Bild eines unterirdisch wühlenden Maulwurfs. Vor allem in Raabes historische Texte schreibt sich diese Maulwurfsarchäologie als geschichtshermeneutisches Programm ein. Ihre Spur legt die vorliegende Studie frei. Sie stellt die enge Verzahnung von Geschichte und Anthropologie als wesentlich für die literarische Geschichtssicht dieses Autors heraus. Am historischen Gesamtwerk Raabes wird deutlich, daß epochenübergreifende, historismuskritische Geschichtsbezüge keinem pessimistisch motivierten Geschichtskreislauf das Wort reden. Gerade am Themenkomplex der nationalen Entwicklungsstationen Deutschlands, der die historischen Texte in zeittypischer Weise dominiert, werden spezifische Modelle sichtbar. An ihnen kristallisiert die Studie in strukturgeschichtlicher Weise markante Etappen illiberaler 'deutscher Sonderwegs'-Tendenzen heraus. Diese lassen sich zudem 'maulwurfsarchäologisch' vertiefen bis in mentalitätsgeschichtliche und kollektivpsychologische Schichten einer Triebgeschichte hinein. Damit diese moderne Geschichtssicht literarisch artikulierbar wird, sind ebenso innovative Erzähltechniken nötig. Mit ihnen schreibt sich Raabe auch ästhetisch in die Literatur der Moderne ein

    The 1798 Rebellion, a watershed event in Irish history, has been a source of both inspiration and controversy over the last two centuries and continues to provoke debate up to the present day. The ongoing discussion about the meaning of the Rebellion has not been limited to history books, but has also found vivid expression in Irish fiction and theatre. The product of extensive research, this study provides a comprehensive survey of historical novels and plays published on the topic throughout the twentieth century, comparing them with relevant historiography. It draws attention to a number of outstanding but often neglected literary works, bringing together materials written in both English and Irish. Employing important theoretical concepts such as Derrida's 'spectre' and Hayden White's tropological view of history, the book probes the relationship between historiography and fiction to shed light on their interplay in the Irish context, including the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland. This investigation illuminates a number of broader questions, including the most pressing of all: in what way should we deal with the 'spectres' of the past and their complex legacies?

    Davis's study could scarcely be more timely or invigorating. SEAN KEILEN, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg VA. A majority of the fiction composed in England in the second half of the sixteenth century was set in the past. All the major prose writers of the period (Thomas Lodge, Sir Philip Sidney, Thomas Nashe, Thomas Deloney, Robert Greene) produced historical fiction, with settings ranging from the ancient world (as in Sidney's 'Arcadia') to the time of Henry VIII (in Nashe's 'The Unfortunate Traveller'). Yet while studies of the historical drama of the period abound, the historical bias of prose fiction has so far escaped any sort of sustained critical consideration. 'Renaissance Historical Fiction' is the first book-length study of this important topic. It argues for the complex ways in which these prose fictions engage with an idea of the past, and of their power to destabilize some of our dominant models for understanding the period of 'the Renaissance'. The wide range of texts discussed includes Lodge's 'Robin the Devil'; Greene's 'Ciceronis Amor'; John Lyly's 'Euphues and his England'; and the anonymous 'Famous History of Friar Bacon'. In addition, a chapter apiece is devoted to three key authors (Sidney, Deloney and Nashe) whose work best represents the imaginative richness and thematic complexity of the historical fiction of the late sixteenth century.     In einer seiner wenigen Selbstaussagen bilanziert Wilhelm Raabe (1831-1910) die eigene Tätigkeit als Schriftsteller kurz vor seinem Tod im Bild eines unterirdisch wühlenden Maulwurfs. Vor allem in Raabes historische Texte schreibt sich diese Maulwurfsarchäologie als geschichtshermeneutisches Programm ein. Ihre Spur legt die vorliegende Studie frei. Sie stellt die enge Verzahnung von Geschichte und Anthropologie als wesentlich für die literarische Geschichtssicht dieses Autors heraus. Am historischen Gesamtwerk Raabes wird deutlich, daß epochenübergreifende, historismuskritische Geschichtsbezüge keinem pessimistisch motivierten Geschichtskreislauf das Wort reden. Gerade am Themenkomplex der nationalen Entwicklungsstationen Deutschlands, der die historischen Texte in zeittypischer Weise dominiert, werden spezifische Modelle sichtbar. An ihnen kristallisiert die Studie in strukturgeschichtlicher Weise markante Etappen illiberaler 'deutscher Sonderwegs'-Tendenzen heraus. Diese lassen sich zudem 'maulwurfsarchäologisch' vertiefen bis in mentalitätsgeschichtliche und kollektivpsychologische Schichten einer Triebgeschichte hinein. Damit diese moderne Geschichtssicht literarisch artikulierbar wird, sind ebenso innovative Erzähltechniken nötig. Mit ihnen schreibt sich Raabe auch ästhetisch in die Literatur der Moderne ein

    Davis's study could scarcely be more timely or invigorating. SEAN KEILEN, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg VA. A majority of the fiction composed in England in the second half of the sixteenth century was set in the past. All the major prose writers of the period (Thomas Lodge, Sir Philip Sidney, Thomas Nashe, Thomas Deloney, Robert Greene) produced historical fiction, with settings ranging from the ancient world (as in Sidney's 'Arcadia') to the time of Henry VIII (in Nashe's 'The Unfortunate Traveller'). Yet while studies of the historical drama of the period abound, the historical bias of prose fiction has so far escaped any sort of sustained critical consideration. 'Renaissance Historical Fiction' is the first book-length study of this important topic. It argues for the complex ways in which these prose fictions engage with an idea of the past, and of their power to destabilize some of our dominant models for understanding the period of 'the Renaissance'. The wide range of texts discussed includes Lodge's 'Robin the Devil'; Greene's 'Ciceronis Amor'; John Lyly's 'Euphues and his England'; and the anonymous 'Famous History of Friar Bacon'. In addition, a chapter apiece is devoted to three key authors (Sidney, Deloney and Nashe) whose work best represents the imaginative richness and thematic complexity of the historical fiction of the late sixteenth century. It examines the historical novel's connections with Enlightenment and Romantic theories of history; with the rise of literary regionalism; with the ambitions of Romantic writers to revive the epic and romance; with changing conceptions of gender roles; and with the authors' troubled responses to the great revolutionary and imperialistic conflicts of the modern era.
